The Wingfeather Saga and Narnia are definitely on my favorites list, but I absolutely love Patricia St. John books. My favorite is Star of Light, but I also really like Tanglewood’s Secret and Treasures of the Snow. Like Wingfeather, they are meant for kids, but they are fantastic books no matter how old you may be.

Ah! Thank you all SO much for giving your answers! You’ve really helped me think more about my character and story, and I’ve had some new ideas due to all of your thoughts, so I’m really excited! 🙂
@arindown, Yes, that was very helpful! I can have a bit of a one-track mind sometimes, so it’s easy for me to get so caught up in all her messiness I…[Read more]

Hey friends and fellow writers!
So… I need help. I have a character who is kind of an avalanche of bitterness. She hates the situation she’s in, she hates the people around her, she hates herself…. Yeah… she’s kind of a mess.
Anyway, I’ve given this a lot of thought (I’ve been drafting this story for about five years now), and I’ve decided…[Read more]

@noodle-mum I’m surprised no one has mentioned the Chronicles of Narnia yet! C. S. Lewis even said it isn’t a good kids book if adults can’t enjoy it and adults can definitely enjoy it! I read it for book club last year and it was great! The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is my favorite of the series.

Probably Stephen Lawhead’s King Arthur books. They sort of lean toward historical fiction more but they have a definite fantasy tinge.
Other than that, I haven’t read many explicitly Christian fantasy novels.

Heyo! I don’t have any tips or anything to add to what has already been said XD But I thought I should poke my head in to say that everything you guys said is really helpful for me, cause I’m having to go through the struggle of developing a “magic” system, myself. 😛

@sarah-inkdragon That’s some really interesting terminology.
@noodle-mum Like Daeus said, Sanderson’s Three Laws are an essential resource, if only because everyone else will have them in mind when discussing magic.

Hardness

We describe magic in a given system as being on a scale from “soft” to “hard.” Generally, the harder the magic,…[Read more]

@noodle-mum Hey there! Great question. ^-^ I don’t really write magic much in this particular book, but there is a fairy-like race called Angorai that use natural elements that can seem a bit like magic. To them, it’s not magic. It’s just regular healing and such.

Hey SE people!
We’ve launched a cool new feature on the forum called groups.
You can find them in the nav bar like so:

Groups are hubs for writers to gather around something they share in common. They include a Facebook-like feed and most of them also include their own forums.
So far there are three types of groups:

Glad you’re feeling better.
My family is feeling much better. Me and my sisters are fully recovered and my mom is getting her energy back. Right now I’m just praying that my dad doesn’t get sick because he’s a pastor and he doesn’t have time to be sick during the Christmas season.

Hi guys,
I’m looking to ramp up a writing coaching program, and before I do I want to do some beta testing to get the kinks worked out and get some reviews.
So I’m opening up three coaching slots. It’ll be a discounted price, since you’ll be doing me a service by signing up. I’m looking for 1-3 people to fill these three packages:
