Princess Foo replied to the topic Revealing villain motivations? in the forum General Writing Discussions 1 year, 4 months ago
The good thing is that Liorah already has a lot of the background information necessary, so the conversation doesn’t need to be a monologue. It can be a really quick explanation.
One way I see explaining this is a brief conversation, either with Hakan himself, or simply someone on his side, such as a captured soldier or the…[Read more]

I am an Advocate (INFJ-T).
1) How do you react to the danger of the unknown?
Ha ha. Not well. Seriously, throughout high school I would have a meltdown every time I moved up ONE GRADE because “That’s so much closer to college and I don’t feel ready yet and AAAAAAAAAH.” Plot twist—I love college.
I deal with “the unknown” by trying to make it…[Read more]

Princess Foo replied to the topic Is it okay to base characters off yourself? in the forum Characters 1 year, 10 months ago
I think the important thing to remember here is it is okay, and even good at times, to BASE a character off yourself as long as the character ISN’T you. Just because you used yourself as inspiration doesn’t mean that the character must act like you all the time.
I am seeing two separate questions in this question. One: people don’t know…[Read more]

For POV quiet characters, the important thing to remember is that just because they aren’t loud audibly, that doesn’t mean they aren’t loud mentally. This is where the importance of narrative voice comes in. Where other characters make snide remarks to their friends, the quiet character can say it to herself. She can have just as interesting and…[Read more]

Princess Foo replied to the topic Ugh! I hate writing first-person! in the forum General Writing Discussions 2 years ago
@edmund-lloyd-fletcher I mainly write in first person.
For me at least, when I think of telling vs showing, I think of emotions and thoughts. You are telling me how you are feeling. It’s “I was angry and sad” instead of “My eyes burned. I swiped at my eyes with a clenched fist.” So “I did this. I went there.” isn’t telling to me. Those…[Read more]

Princess Foo replied to the topic Writing a fantasy (Werewolf) novel: Am I doing things right? in the forum Fantasy Writers 2 years, 1 month ago
@ka_modina A couple of thoughts:
- “Mating for life” is actually how God meant marriage to be. Matthew 19:4-6 says, “He answered, ‘Have you not read that he who created them from the beginning made them male and female, 5 and said, ‘Therefore a man shall leave his father and his mother and hold fast to his wife, and the two shall become one f…

Princess Foo replied to the topic Why does my writing have to glorify god in the forum Themes 2 years, 2 months ago
@phoenix Those are some really hard questions to grapple with. I would really encourage you to talk about it with someone that you trust. Your pastor, youth pastor, or parents.
There are two truths that come to me when I think of your question.
First, God is good.
Psalm 107:1 says, “Give thanks to the LORD, for he is good; his love endures…[Read more]

Not so coincidently, there are some pretty clear Bible verses about this. Everything is our life has to do with God. As @naiya-dyani said, glorifying God is our purpose in life!
1 Corinthians 10:31, “So, whether you eat or drink, or whatever you do, do all to the glory of God.”
Colossians 3:17, “And whatever you do, in word or deed, do…[Read more]

@noodle-mum I’m surprised no one has mentioned the Chronicles of Narnia yet! C. S. Lewis even said it isn’t a good kids book if adults can’t enjoy it and adults can definitely enjoy it! I read it for book club last year and it was great! The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe is my favorite of the series.

Princess Foo replied to the topic Is writing ok to use for working through trauma in the forum Themes 2 years, 2 months ago
@phoenix I actually just got back from a writing conference where I sat on a session in this exact topic! I thought the session was about writing characters with tragic backstories. It was not. (Note to self: Read the descriptions carefully when choosing what to go listen to.)
The writer said that there are two ways to write about trauma. There…[Read more]

Princess Foo replied to the topic How do YOU begin a fantasy story? in the forum Fantasy Writers 2 years, 2 months ago
@michael-erasmus I almost always start with the premise, but not plot. The premise is normally something like “What if Beauty and the Beast was told from the POV of the enchantress?” Or a line of prose or dialogue comes to me and I think, “Whoa. What’s the story where this line happens?” Recently it was, “Does that make her the Beauty or the…[Read more]

Maybe you could say something reminding her that life with God is not all rainbows and puppies, and writing like it is is reflecting a false view of reality, and in fact a false view of God. If her writing tells people that the love of God instantly solves all worldly problems then she is lying about who God is. And that is a serious thing.

@emgc I think that pretty much all the tests are multiple-choice, so that’s nice. 50 is a passing score, and I think you need to get about 80% right? The website below has more information for individual cleps.
A really good website for CLEPS is http://www.free-clep-prep.com/ They have information on how difficult the test will be, the material,…[Read more]

@emgc I will sing the praises of the CLEPs. They are what allowed me to double major, since credits that I normally would be putting towards gen ed classes can be niche classes for my second major. I LOVE the CLEPs and would encourage anyone to take as many as they can. Have you taken any before?
I’m not really one to make resolutions because I…[Read more]
