Hey SE people!
We’ve launched a cool new feature on the forum called groups.
You can find them in the nav bar like so:
Groups are hubs for writers to gather around something they share in common. They include a Facebook-like feed and most of them also include their own forums.
So far there are three types of groups:
1. Word war groups
2. Genre groups
3. Niche groupsWord war groups are the new way we’ll be running word wars. Previously, guilds competed against each other, but those who weren’t in a guild hardly ever competed. This will allow anyone to participate.
Word war groups are only for writers who intend to regularly participate in the monthly word wars.* They’ll be capped off at 15 members max. I’ll try to keep their numbers even so everything is fair.
*(Even if you can only contribute a hundred words each time, we’d love to have you. Even when you’re editing, you can still contribute to the word wars so long as your revisions tend to increase your word count, not decrease it. If your revisions do tend to decrease your word count and the revisions will take more than three months, it would be best if you stepped down from the word war group to make room for someone else. You’ll be welcome to join back in once you have word counts to contribute.)
To join a word war group, sign up here! https://forms.gle/1VPxEsG219Fx5xyk8
Genre groups are hubs for writers of the same genre to talk shop. These are public groups anyone with an account on the forum can join.
We hope the Facebook-like feed feature will encourage more open discussions and sharing.
Niche groups are for writers with common interests other than a shared genre. So far, we have a group for writers over 25 years of age. We also have a group for writers who are geeky about publishing and marketing.
Let me know if you have any questions or if you have a group idea you’d like Story Embers to create.

January 28, 2020 at 12:05 am #104600Katthewriter@katthewriter@daeus-lamb what if we don’t know what some genres of our books are…..? Or is that only a problem i have?
Also lol how did you tag everyone?
Can there be like villians groups? Or such to discuss, or just character groups?

January 28, 2020 at 6:56 am #104605Taylor Clogston@taylorclogstonHaha, I’ve been wondering what that Groups tab that went nowhere was for. I’m glad to see this happen! I hope it’ll help make SE as vibrant as it can be.

January 30, 2020 at 5:57 pm #104853Taylor Clogston@taylorclogstonCan we get a Short Story and Flash Fiction group? Either one for each, or a general “short things” category. I feel like that would be helpful considering the default mindset seems to be “novels.”
February 11, 2020 at 9:51 pm #105934Katthewriter@katthewriter@taylorclogston so does novellas go into that catagory? Cuz tecnically my Joe series (The Secret Plan, ect.) Is only gonna be like 13-16K
February 12, 2020 at 6:10 am #105948Taylor Clogston@taylorclogston@katthewriter I usually think of novellas as closer to novels, since they go up to around 40,000-50,000 words, while I think short stories tend to be less than 10,000 words? I don’t know =P I think on a scale from short story to novel, what works specifically on the novel side apply more to a novella than what works specifically on the short story side.
There’s another category which I don’t hear as much of called the novelette. The Nebula awards, for example, define a novelette as at least 7,500 words but less than 17,500. I don’t really know where it would fall.
February 12, 2020 at 9:20 am #105956Katthewriter@katthewriterOhh i was trying to remember which one was smaller, a novela or novelette xD
My first draft of The Secret Plan was about 7K and fit into a short story. But then i decided to do two POV’s. But actually in this series the books are going to get slightly longer as they go. XD More POV’s.

For the Niche maybe you could have a homeschool/homeschool graduate group. I’m sure a lot of us fit into that group and it’d be cool to see who was and is homeschooled.
