Soooo… I’m thinking of submitting a story to the contest, but I’m not sure if it’s quite good enough. Would it be okay to post it here for critiques?

Hey y’all, I’ve got a couple inquires for ya.
Whether you’ve written first person present or not, do you have any tips for writing it? Any common mistakes you see people commit?
Secondly, what are your thoughts on a first person present book with a few third person past interludes and possibly an epilogue? I’ve never seen a book with both past a…[Read more]

Noah Cochran started the topic Introspection in the forum General Writing Discussions 3 years, 11 months ago
Introspection is written in many different ways, and I had a few questions and thoughts I wanted to discuss:
Do you use direct, italicized thought (where first person pronouns are used)? At first, I used basically none, but the more I looked at popular books, the more I see it used, and am thus tempted to use it (plus, I do like it, as long as…[Read more]

Noah Cochran started the topic Prose Questions in the forum General Writing Discussions 3 years, 11 months ago
I know what should and shouldn’t be done in prose is highly nuanced and opinionated, but I chose a few examples that I find myself running into, to ask y’all about. So, my question is, in the following examples, are they okay as they are, or if not, how would you write them? (aka, is there a better way to write them?)
Here they are:
Alfonso and…[Read more]

Hi Daeus,
There are some posts missing in the Forums. Not sure if it is a tech glitch or some have been removed for editorial purposes or the content did not align with the guidelines.
I did ask a question on here that I do not see, but it was regarding posting a shared MP3 link to a…[Read more]

Thanks, @briannastorm for sharing those articles. What a great overview of the topic!
I realized I don’t have a super-strong opinion one way or the other, though, as some of you said, there are topics I personally would not write about. However, that would not make me assume that any Christian author who did choose to write about them was making…[Read more]

I would, too! If SE gets big enough or has the ability to do so in the future, that’d be way beyond cool. And I’d wear them everywhere! 🙂

Hello Story Embers leaders, wherever you are! *waves and offers virtual pizza*
I have a question.
So I finished my first fantasy novel. The first of four, hopefully. Up till now, I’ve been self-publishing my novels because editors scare me and so do contracts. Well, they did, at any rate. Turns out, self-publishing also means I have to advertise…[Read more]

🙂 So glad to be of service…
Now… I’m pretty sure that tactic makes the story omniscient… because an omniscient narrator looks in on the mind of the character, from the outside. This means he can actually do it with any character, though… this is hard to balance. An omniscient narrator can stick with primarily one…[Read more]

Disclaimer: I’ve only published a handful of short things and haven’t really jumped into marketing, so this might not be the most helpful advice. 😛
I understand the reasoning behind the idea of writing only in one genre. It is, I’m sure, easier to market in only one genre and be able to form a coherent tone and style that your readers can…[Read more]

Thanks you both so much for the advice on this! Quite a few people who are active and successful self-published authors recommended my line editor, and he’s edited books that sell very well. I believe he even edited a few bestsellers in the LitRPG genre. I can’t speak on my developmental editor though =P
