This is going to be the point after which I have to bow out. To say God has a problem with the English word “magic,” a word which necessarily does not exist in a book which was not written in English, such that a thing becomes evil even if it is not essentially evil before that label is applied, is not only to put words in God…
How long have you been writing Denali?
then I would mention that the supernatural isn’t inherently bad
This is your reoccurring argument throughout your comment, so let me drill down on it. As you said, miracles, exist, the spiritual realm is all around us (as I’ve already said, the spiritual realm is realer than the n…[Read more]
It’s been about 4 months since I’ve started, didn’t know a thing about writing until last June, so I’m a newbie. 😄
Basically, it’s about a U.S.S.R. celebrity actress on a mission to expose the atrocities of Stalin’s man-made famine of the 1930’s.
I’m intrigued, keep me updated on its status. 🙂 What got you interested in this time…[Read more]
Well, thanks for all your thoughts. 🙂 I hope that your writing will never shine a bad light on Christianity and that you will really think through the act of creating your own religions and supernatural beings, gods, and abilities (like Sanderson’s and Riordan’s) before you use them.
Hey Denali, glad to have…[Read more]
Thanks for the reply Ashley. 🙂
I believe I have answered on these points in my last few comments in reply to Taylor and Archer, so read over my replies to them if you would like to see my rebuttals to your points on the definition of magic, Sanderon’s works, portraying magic and the supernatural in fantasy worlds, etc…I really…[Read more]
To be candid, I’m surprised that you even consider Riordan okay. The bible constantly talks against other gods, and messing with demonic or and natural realms, and Riordan’s plots are literally based around greek gods and their supernatural powers. Do you think our God would like us reading books where those false gods are actually…[Read more]
Feel free to barge in anytime. 🙂
I will most definitely be checking that link out, thanks for sharing. 🙂
Nine drafts? Yikes, you must be quite the perfectionist. xD By drafts I assume you mean editing runthroughs? Or do you mean actually re-writing/recasting each chapter? Even 5 drafts seems like a lot to me. xD
Wow, that is crazy thought out…and I love it. xD It sounds like that will make the depth and nuances of your book all the better, keep me updated on your progress till completion. 🙂
Hey Shira, I don’t think we’ve met. How long have you been writing? What’s your WIP about?
I’ve been considering NaNoWritMo, but my first draft is nearly complete so I’m afraid I will run out of word to write. xD We’ll see though.
I don’t think that’s necessarily the case so long as rule #1 is followed and the benefits are temporary and far outweighed by the consequences.
It’s a real dangerous thing to mess with and it can portray you (the author) as someone who is okay with magic to readers who are confused. It’s a very slippery slope.
Riordan’s and Sanders…
Then I spent the next year researching self-publishing and marketing
Okay, you’ve piqued my attention. 🙂 What has your research shown? Do you happen to have a step by step process for step publishing type up somewhere that you could share with me? Or is it all in your head? xD If you ever have the time, I would love to hear…[Read more]
So if I understand your point correctly, you’re saying that you agree that magic and supernatural things are sin, but it is fine to right if portrayed carefully as thing a person does in the book that is wrong, like any other sin such as murder, theft, lust, lying, etc…Is that correct?
If that is what you’re saying, that is a valid…[Read more]
I’m not sure what “gilded blood” is, but I love it as a name for a book. xD
How long have you been writing Cathy?
Any writers’ voice quirks you really like?
I’m a fairly boring guy when it comes to special tastes. xD Why don’t you recommend me some good books with unique voices. 🙂
Thank you!! (*idk why that makes me so happy somebody likes my ranting 😂that’s so much better than being called pretty*). I was following the…
I think we’ll have to agree to disagree on this point. I don’t believe it’s anti-biblical to portray a fact of the world, be it physical or spiritual, so long as it’s done with biblical truth in mind and with care not to mislead readers.
There is a huge difference between portraying a fact (showing that it exists) and having a protago…[Read more]
Nice, that’s great that you’re able to make a career at of it.
Thanks for the tip Rose! That was a great video. I had been planning something similar to this, and I already have a mental list in my head that I want to recast, so I think were on similar tracks. Do you recast the scenes you have chosen to recast first? Or do you go through the book chapter by chapter and recast the scenes…[Read more]
So do you plan to write any novels or are you going to stick with role playing? What is your current WIP?
Glad to have you man!
Hmm…so this is a nuanced question. If someone were to ask me if I was writing YA, I would actually say no. I consider myself to be writing adult. YA in its most basic form is just a marketing title, it’s not truly a category of books. People market books as YA so teenagers can know that the publisher is aiming it at them, even…[Read more]
THANK YOU NOAH
Joelle, I loved reading this, it made my day. 🙂 I’m glad we agree, we need to complain to each other about it sometime. 🙂 xD
Thanks for the reply Olivia! I’m glad you were able to see the clear differences through my mess of a post. xD
However. As it currently stands, the word “magic” is jus…
