Thanks you both so much for the advice on this! Quite a few people who are active and successful self-published authors recommended my line editor, and he’s edited books that sell very well. I believe he even edited a few bestsellers in the LitRPG genre. I can’t speak on my developmental editor though =P
@j-a-penrose I feel you on the course reviews specifically =P
@briannastorm I mean, my line editor did more than just copy edit, but I feel like I payed a few hundred bucks to be told things a few decent beta readers could also have told me.
Thanks for linking those resources. I see a lot of great editors who I am sure are amazing by professional standards, but I doubt their service would make any kind of difference at this point in my career.
Maybe one day when I’m a world famous author, when I’m the master of all I survey, when I spend my days lounging on the library steps, when I wear a crown of discarded dust jackets on my head, when I hold a mug of exotic earl grey (brewed with leaves grown in the mist on the tip of the Tower of London) in my right hand, maybe then I will find myself able to afford to drop three grand per pass on a novel edit.
