Samuel replied to the topic Character Names… in the forum General Writing Discussions 7 years, 11 months ago
@andrew I used to come up with the weirdest freakin names…Granted I was like 12, but they were cringey…I won’t even bother naming them they were so bad
‘Octabbrell’ kinda reminds me of the Pokemon Octillery…But that’s just me. It sounds like some sort of underwater character with cheeks that puff out to hold water. They also have…[Read more]

Samuel replied to the topic Can a main character have a flat arc? in the forum Characters 7 years, 11 months ago
@r-m-archer I think flat arcs are usually okay, but if you’re using it, then instead of the character changing, the character helps other people to change in one way or another. So even a cynical character could accomplish that, they don’t have to be particularly noble—But it may help. But change is at the core of every story, so if your MC…[Read more]

Samuel replied to the topic Looking for laptop recommendations in the forum General Writing Discussions 7 years, 11 months ago
WINDOWS.
I have a Dell Inspiron. I’m not sure what number it is but it runs Windows 10 and hasn’t let me down(except for the time my little brother completely reset it XD). It is pretty much the Windows equivalent to the newer Macs (I only got it because it was too weak for my dad’s work lol). I personally find Windows easier to use than Mac,…[Read more]

@raemarie Welcome to Story Embers, or Emberia as we like to call it.
NOW TURN BACK BEFORE IT’S TOO LATE
Jk. I wasn’t on KP so I’ll introduce myself; I’m Samuel, an ENFJ-T. *holds up two fingers in some made-up greeting* I’m known for popping up in weird places and don’t really have a specific presence in Emberia…At least, I think so…This is…[Read more]

@inkling-for-christ I haven’t read it yet, but I know it has dragons in it.
So I know I’d probably like it.

Samuel replied to the topic Platforming vs. Writing in the forum General Writing Discussions 7 years, 11 months ago
@fctait You should check out this article: https://thewritepractice.com/fiction-platform/
a newly published author said she didn’t tell her publishers about her platform until after she had her book contract and was judged on writing alone.
I don’t think this writer had it right. The platform is not the author’s blog; the platform is the au…[Read more]

Samuel replied to the topic What is your favorite book(s/series)/movie(s) in the forum General Writing Discussions 7 years, 12 months ago
My favorite book series is probably the Cloak of the Light trilogy by Chuck black, or the Paradise trilogy by Ted Dekker… I can’t decide which.
Movies…Marvel. The Captain America branch is really good, but I like Ant Man too…Pretty much any Marvel movie, but Infinity War, Ant Man and Civil War probably top the charts.
And Bourne. Ohhhhh Bourne.

Samuel replied to the topic The # Pillars of Writing in a Series in the forum General Writing Discussions 7 years, 12 months ago
@devastate-lasting I think in a series, such as a trilogy, there CAN be a plot, them and char arc that spans all three books, but generally, I think, there is also a smaller version, per se, of each one. For example in Chris Columbus’ House of Secrets trilogy, there is a structure to each one, a climax and everything, but it is still part of a s…[Read more]

Samuel replied to the topic Getting Knocked in the Back of the Head by a Fire Extinguisher in the forum General Writing Discussions 7 years, 12 months ago
I think it would probably crack their skull, at least a little bit. But an extinguisher is aluminum filled with compressed air, so it may even kill depending on how hard you hit. It would definitely draw blood. If Chris is a big guy and he’s swinging full force it would probably split his skull pretty bad.

Samuel replied to the topic Self-publishing in the forum General Writing Discussions 8 years ago
@jenwriter17 I self-published my novel with Christian Faith Publishing. NOT recommended at all. They are selective, but they don’t really care about the quality of your novel. So mine somehow got in despite being pretty awful.
Their editing team is pretty horrible, the page design team was fairly bad, and the graphic design team made me gag. I…[Read more]

Samuel replied to the topic Question about Fan Fictions in the forum General Writing Discussions 8 years ago
@thewirelessblade I think it’s okay, as long as you’re not writing anything obviously against Scripture. Writing is art, and God created it to be art, but it doesn’t necessarily have to mention him outright to be worshipful. Music, for example. People seem to think only “Christian” music is praiseworthy and anything else is sinful. I beg to…[Read more]

Samuel replied to the topic How Long Does it Take to Wake Up After Being Knocked Unconscious? in the forum General Writing Discussions 8 years ago
@bigideaskc You’re welcome!
Also, just figured out hitting between the eyes won’t KO, but it will break your knuckles (Unless they are perhaps using a blunt weapon) XD so don’t use that my bad
The jaw is the prime KO spot, hitting one way or the other pulls it back and snaps it back into the temple.
Nauseating, but we’re writers lol

Samuel replied to the topic In Need of Athelas or a Salve to Help With the Bloody Process of Rewriting in the forum General Writing Discussions 8 years ago
@ericawordsmith Well it took me 5 years on and off for 45,000 when I was eight, so you have that going for you. 200,000 words…dang.
What I would do in such a situation, with such a large manuscript, is to take everything I know about the book, and separate it into categories: worldbuilding, characters and characterization, theme, and plot. If…[Read more]

Samuel replied to the topic To tone down or not to tone down? in the forum Themes 8 years ago
@r-m-archer I think it depends on your definition of ‘clean’. Even the Bible has horrible stories in it, stuff my parents would never let me read in novel form, and yet we gain meaningful insight from that. (Plus those stories were true, but that’s not the topic here.) So I think if you’re still getting biblical insight across, as is your…[Read more]

Samuel started the topic Antagonist issues… in the forum Characters 8 years ago
So in my current novel, still in outlining, I have almost everything sorted out for the basic premise and plot—Everything, except for how I’m going to make the antagonist-protagonist conflict personal and emotional instead tacking on the antagonist (*cough* Dr. Strange *cough*)
Long post. Don’t say I didn’t warn you…But it’s long
So the…[Read more]
