Mayra followed Nithel to the stream and cupped her hands in it, feeling the coolness of it. She drank thirstily, the dryness of her throat slowly recovering.
She heard a ripping sound and turned to see Nithel ripping his shirt. Her mouth fell open as he tore a large piece of it away. What was he-?
She felt the blood drip down her nose and her…[Read more]

I am Nithel, son of Father. Those words bounced back and forth in Mayra’s head, over and over again. She shook her head, confused. What was he on about? Who was this father of his? And why did he not refer to him by his proper name?
Unless – unless that was his name.
The gears in her brain pushed themselves into motion as she stared at this…[Read more]

Hello @kimlikesart 🙂
Thanks for asking! Its quite complicated haha but I like red roses because they played a big part in strengthening my relationship with God. You could call it a mystical experience 🙂 but ya I love the colour red and red roses are now my favourite.
And your very welcome 🙂 that sounds lovely, where did you go on your…[Read more] -

Mayra stared at him silently, her jaw tight. Her eyes were stinging as if she was holding back a wave of tears. This boy was either brave or stupid, to treat her with such courtesy. He wanted her to eat with them, even after everything that had happened. Her chest tightened at the sight of his soft eyes.
“You – should not – care,” Mayra ans…[Read more]

Hi Kimmi! Thank you so much, I love red roses so it’s kind of my theme now 🙂 I love your banner too, I like the nature theme. I’m doing okay, thanks for asking though honestly the past few weeks have been hard for me tbh. How are you doing today? -
Brian Stansell started the topic Examples of How You Use Subtext in the forum Contemporary Fiction Writers 5 years ago
I love the idea of things hidden below the surface. Of mysterious buried treasures, and ways to implant certain words or innuendos that have either a dual meaning or are indicative of an even larger mystery lurking beneath the surface action of the story.
I was interested in how each of you uses the concept of subtext in your personal writing,…[Read more]

Malvat burst through the hole after the others, showering dirt and rock down into the collapsing room. The ground beneath him held – miraculously. He attributed it to the overall strangeness of this place.
Raising his head to they sky, Malvat shook the rubble off his gleaming ebony body and sniffed the air. Clear, but somehow scented with…[Read more]

The boy was offering her fruit. He looked at her hesitantly, then looked away. She wondered what he made of her. She had hurt his friend after all. Yet he was still offering her food. What was left of it anyway.
She stared at him carefully, then pushed his hands away, shaking her head. “You – eat,” she answered. Then she pointed at herself. “Me -…[Read more]

The blood flow from Brendin’s nose halted at a touch from Jericho.
“Let’s just all take a moment…to calm down…and divide our rations, and save our strength for the next disaster.”
“Yes, that would seem wise,” Jericho said, somewhat wryly. She sat down on the grass and watched quietly as Alessio and the wolf-girl – Lupa? – began conversing.…[Read more]

Before he could think straight Alessio felt himself yanked forward, dizzy with the noise, images, memories, present all jumbled. There was something he…couldn’t rememb–He nearly lost his balance shoved through the hole and darted up disoriented, prepared to fend off a blow.
But everything was bright and…he blinked back the hot sudden light,…[Read more] -

Malvat studied the woman.
This is why they call me the Blood Mink.
Her thoughts flitted across her brain, her mind barely registering the words.
“No one – come near,” she hissed, the words slow and forced as she took up a guarded position, powers swirling around her body. “Or – I – hurt.”
People were drawing weapons. The air quickly escalated…[Read more]

Malvat rumbled. He was being ordered about by a human yet again. No matter if this one was empowered, he would let the ceiling crumble before he obeyed again. Was humiliated again. Of course, he’d save her life – it wouldn’t do to appear heartless – but it would be clear he chose to do it.
Unfortunately, before he could execute his plan, Jericho…[Read more]

Brendin barely caught the mute girl as she collapsed from the strain of holding up the ceiling, blood streaming down her face. Already the crisscrossing network of red energy was receding and the ceiling beginning to cave again. Alessio was shouting something, but the rumbling drowned out his voice.
Jericho quickly strode to the center of the c…[Read more]

The shadowy entity continued to lurk at the edge of Jericho’s senses, hiding in the dark recesses of the dim room. It was a large chamber, circular, and with a ceiling somewhere far above in the darkness. There were no entrances or exits other than the one Malvat had just made, and the only light came from the fire of Brendin and Alessio as w…[Read more]

Yeah, souls are really important to the stories involving Haven. And Brendin has a very long, complicated and messy character arc involving trying to reconcile his past as a mære under Ingor with who he was before and who he is now (which he really is not at all sure of). I as the author find it kinda heartbreaking to see him go…[Read more]

By now, with all the anomalies the castle had thrown at them, Jericho and Brendin were barely surprised when a newcomer entered the room.
Jericho smiled at Alessio in approval as he took charge of the situation. Brendin meanwhile quickly got out of the bed and summoned a small flame in his palm. He hoped he needn’t use his syne now; the fire w…[Read more]

“Pick a wall,” Alessio said to the newcomer, authority in his voice as flames crackled over his body. If Malvat had ever doubted that he was empowered, he couldn’t now. “If there’s not a door we’ll make one. Anyone who has an ability can start chiseling out a weak point. Malvat can ram it down then?” He looked up, dark eyes meeting Malvat’s. H…[Read more]
