Mayra stared at him silently, her jaw tight. Her eyes were stinging as if she was holding back a wave of tears. This boy was either brave or stupid, to treat her with such courtesy. He wanted her to eat with them, even after everything that had happened. Her chest tightened at the sight of his soft eyes.

“You – should not – care,” Mayra answered. “Who – are you? Why – do this?” It came out strained and hoarse and she clenched her fists in anger at the weakness she felt within her. Her energy flickered around her body, feeding off of her emotions.
