How to train your dragon 2 is actually pretty good. The thematic question is something like “How can a peacemaker stand against a powerful and ruthless enemy?” They do a great job playing this to the full. Also just a beautifully structured and moving film.
I also like The Stormlight Archives, especially Oathbringer, which examines…[Read more]

Same! XD
Hm… *thinks hard*
I think The Story of Rolf and the Viking Bow by Allen French might work, if you can get used to the style of prose that it uses. I’m rereading it rn because I remember loving the themes, though I admittedly haven’t read it in a while, so my memory might be faulty.
I’ll let you know how what I think whe…[Read more] -

Hi friends!
Our word war champions have emerged. In a stunning victory, word war group #3 takes the lead with 14,577 words, group 2 following with 7,358, and group 1 strangely no-show.
The individual with the highest wordcount was @joelle-stone with 6,841 words!
Great job everyone who participated.
-
Congratulations, @joelle-stone!
-
Thx Dakota!! 😀 I’ve gotta say that word wars make it much easier to be motivated, heh heh. 🙂 How many did you get?
-
-
@joelle-stone 6,511. Yep, they’re motivating. 😉

6511?!? Wow, good job!!! Which team are you on, if I may ask?
-
-
@joelle-stone Thanks! And it’s Word War Group 2.

Eeep! Where do I begin? Everyone had some really good recs, especially The Giver (one of my favorites) Fahrenheit 451, and the Chronicles of Prydain.
I mostly read MG, but I’ve found some with great themes. If you’re interested, they are:
The True Confessions of Charlotte Doyle and Crispin: Cross of Lead (by Avi)

Thanks for the answers! And the good questions you mentioned. It seems they can help me to develop my writing.I think this character is disappointed in the church. His arc will be: how to trust again the children of God?
Thanks also for suggesting to pray over this theme. Yes, The…[Read more]

My top recommendation would be Andrew Peterson’s Wingfeather Saga. They are amazing, and honestly, the best series I have ever read. I’d even rate them (slightly) above Lord of the Rings, and Chronicles of Narnia.

Also, The Giver Quartet is a good series and the first one, The Giver, seems very pro-life to me. The later books do get rather fantastical (not necessarily a bad thing, but the first one is more sci-fi).
I just bought the two other books in the Roman Britain trilogy and hope to read them soon!

@epicaddie2, that’s an interesting question. I’d argue that any book has a message, whether the author necessarily intended it or not, but it’s not always a good or true one–and I assume that’s what you’re looking for. One book I thoroughly enjoyed as a child was The House of Sixty Fathers by Meindart DeJong. It’s more of a Middle Grade reading…[Read more]

Oooo… I love those authors. Well, I haven’t ever heard of Kate DiCamillo or Jerry Spinelli, but the other authors I love. 😉 Which of Trenton Lee Stewart’s books have you read? I LOVE the Mysterious Benedict Society series, although I haven’t read it in a while. The characters are just so… intriguing. XD I haven’t read…[Read more]

That’s neat! I’m not sure if I have social anxiety, but I’m socially anxious and shy, if that makes sense. It is interesting how we can grow along with our characters, isn’t it?

A character with social anxiety? Sign me up!
And My Lady Jane is a comedic retelling of the story of Lady Jane Grey, who was queen of England for nine days. From what I understand, it is not serious in the slightest; indeed, one of the characters is a shapeshifting horse. There are other books in the series about other famous Janes,…[Read more]

Yeah, I’m always interested in either fiction or poetry for a while, and then I tend to switch off.
That’s so cool! The only things I’ve ever published in magazines was poetry, but I definitely want to publish some of my short stories in the future. 🙂so, random question, do you have any favor…[Read more]

Thank you! For the Kingdom is basically about two kingdoms which split, and now the next generation has a lot of conflict. Nadine, my main character, is trying to save her kingdom basically; but she pretty much fails and messes everything up more. Its kind of complicated, but a few side characters come in, and she has a grudge…[Read more]

I 100% agree that theme/message is hard. My book currently doesn’t even have one. I think ones coming out organically but in the next draft I’ll definitely have to work on it more.

It’s kind of funny, but I didn’t think I’d like Fawkes that much and I ended up enjoying it, and I thought I’d really like Mark of the Thief but I found it a bit disappointing. Hi @epicaddie2 !
I’m new to the forum, but I’ve been reading the Story Embers blog for a while. Nice to meet you!
Historical fantasy is fun! I haven’t read much in that genre (Fawkes and Mark of the Thief are the only ones that spring to mind), but I see a lot of potential. Would you mind sharing the premise or time period of your story?
