Back at it, haha! Apologies for my silence.
I definitely agree with you that this is a cultural thing – both from location and family.
See, I’m from the Midwest. And I haven’t spent really any time in the South, so I can’t say this for sure, but from the way you’re describing it I’d say we place the emphasis on hard work that you…[Read more]

I’m back this morning with a fresher brain. Thank goodness for sleep!
Overnight, the few things I thought of were:
-send your characters through a time warp sink hole (or just a regular sink hole, for that matter)
-find someone dead who comes back to life (maybe with the help of the time warp sink hole). And probably have it be a bad guy, if…[Read more]

Yeah, blow something up. Or find someone dead. Those are my favorite two ideas so far ๐
Hmmm…. other ideas…… sorry. It’s past midnight and my brain is shutting down (so much I almost just wrote “shutting a blank”). I’ll keep thinking, but haven’t got anything right now. Best of luck!

@anne-of-lothlorien Yeah I think my computer was being stupid and not posting it… so whatever. It’s up now.
Also, your version of prom sounds far better than the public school version ๐

Background: Tinero is this mythical creature which is powered by a jewel inset into his chest. If it’s removed, he basically shrivels up and dies. Only Tinero can take out the jewel. Skye wants said jewel.
“Tell me, Tinero. Have you ever loved?” asked Skye.
The creature laughed. “Only myself.”
“Isn’t that vain. Would you ever do something for…[Read more]

I think one key thing is showing instead of telling. Which I’m sure you’ve heard a million times before and don’t want to hear again, but there it is ๐
For instance, anger. Don’t just say, “Mike was furious.” Show us his display of anger. Maybe he throws his phone or punches a wall or crushes something or whatever – show us the character is…[Read more]

@samuel ~
At our local public school, there’s nearly always a sports practice going on after school. So they leave the main portions of the school open for that – the gym (for the athletes) and the commons/lunch area for other people who are still there. Because I’m not actually public schooled, I don’t know if it’sย encouraged to stay at school…[Read more]

@fctait Thank you so much! Glad you liked it ๐
@jane-maree Thank you! Good surprise, I hope ๐ It makes more sense in the context of the book. And yeah, that sentence is long – I write too wordily a lot of times, I think. But thanks for pointing that out! And thanks for the feeback!

The familiar, pungent smell of horse grew stronger as Brynn entered the stable. She paused and breathed in, the scent lingering, dancing inside of her, then fading as she grew accustomed to it. Forgoing the rules so often pressed on children, she ran to her favorite horse, whose ears perked as he heard her light footfalls across the hardwood…[Read more]

One thing that I know about kids is that they pay a TON of attention to little details, especially when you’re telling them something. So maybe if our kid progressively realizes he’s being lied to because the little details keep changing?
I dunno, haha ๐ I like the contemporary idea, though.

@bigideaskc, I can’t say for sure, as it’s never happened to me or anybody I know. Obviously, I think it would depend how hard of a hit it was (if Chris Coleman is seven years old, it’ll be less effective than if he’s basically a living action figure). But, that being said, if it was a good hard hit, it would at least seriously disorient Ruperts.…[Read more]
