@lonathecat, I can’t think of any other short stories really, since I’m usually more of the 300+ page book reader. Do you have any favorites?
Nice to meet you, @claire-h. I love the idea of a futuristic /dystopia story set in the jungles of Peru. That sounds so cool! You’ll have to post updates as you progress. My dad teaches church history. That’s great that you get to audit a Greek class! It sounds like a lot of work, but I’m sure you’re learning a lot.
Lord of the Rings is one of the best stories ever written, and arguably the best film trilogy ever produced, I think it fits into writers talk
@arindown, I wholeheartedly agree!1. Favorite scene: Oooh, this is hard! In the movie, I love the interaction between Aragorn, Legolas, and Gimli as they search for Pippin and Merry. But Helm’s Deep is great, too. It’s all good, really.
[Slightly unrelated, but I was disappointed that they didn’t include the scene in the Hobbit where Gandalf makes up this elaborate story to get all the dwarves into Beorn’s house.]
2. Frodo?: I fit best in the couldn’t-care-less category. I think I like him better in the books and first movie than in the last 2 movies. He seems so discouraged and bleak in those 2. It’s kinda . . . depressing or something.
3. Boromir?: He isn’t my favorite character at all, but I see his bravery when he dies trying to save Pippin and Merry as a good thing. It was pointless in the end, honestly, but he tried. I feel like he’s almost a foil character for Aragorn when Boromir tries to take the ring but Aragorn doesn’t.
Have you read any of Tolkien’s other Middle Earth books?
Only Farmer Giles of Ham and Smith of Wooton Major if those count. 🙂 I found the Silmarillion a bit difficult and confusing when I tried it a few years ago, but I may need to try again sometime.
Do you have a favorite LOTR character?
@mischievous-thwapling, thank you for starting this. Everyone’s responses helped me think through magic in my fantasy world. There are some really great and helpful points here.
@lonathecat, after you wrote:
Also, sorry for such a late reply. Life has been a lot recently haha.
…I then took a month to get back to you. Sorry! 🙂
I haven’t read Farmer Giles of Ham in a while, so it’s not fresh on my mind, but I think I basically agreed with you about how things went for the dragon. Still, I really liked it as a short story.
First of all, I have immensely enjoyed all of your descriptive good-byes.
Second, I don’t know that I really have the time to commit to actively writing in this awesome role play. 🙁 Is it okay if I don’t have a character but still read and make comments/suggestions occasionally?
Also, you are not the only one who struggles to keep track of who’s who, @kylie-wingfeather. Great idea listing everyone!
@kimlikesart, your story sounds so cool!
Basic synopsis of my WIP: My book is a young adult fantasy novel with an epic medieval feel. It has two main characters: a princess named Arlynn and a run-away farm orphan named Jaegar. Basically the goal is to find the missing prince Darak of the country of Agri before the elections are held for a new ruler because the person likely to win this election is the wicked prince Tzadok of Saxum. If Tzadok were to win, he would eventually rule about 75% of the land of Insula Nova…making it relatively easy to conquer the other countries, including Arlynn’s homeland of Silva. In order to find Prince Darak, Jaegar and Arlynn have to find 5 key pieces to unlock a clue to his whereabouts. There’s a lot more to the storyline, but this is the simplified version, sorry if it’s still kinda confusing. Sadly, I think I will need to cut at least the first 10 chapters and completely rewrite them in order for the story to make sense. First, I need to finish this draft. Then, it needs revising and revising and revising. I would absolutely love to publish it someday!

@kimlikesart, 398 pages is awesome! If you’re sharing, what is the basic premise/storyline of that book?
@lonathecat, I have to say that the LoTR books are better than the movies, but the movies really made the books come alive for me. I can’t really choose a favorite between the three books or movies, though. They’re all really good.
When I have time, I will definitely look at getting Beren and Luthien from the library. Have you ever read Tolkien’s Farmer Giles of Ham or Smith of Wooton Major? I’ve enjoyed both those short stories.
@arindown, I get your writer thing. (Would it be weird to name my kids [assuming I marry and God blesses me with children] after my own book’s characters someday? 🙂 ) I actually have a copy of my book’s tentative map up as a decoration in my dorm room. It’s so fun to meet people who understand what it’s like to be a young, Christian bookworm and hopeful author.I mentioned some of my favorite books in my original post, but here are a couple I forgot to put up there: The Thirteen Series by Trisha Priebe, The Dragon Courage series by Kandi Wyatt, and the DragonKeeper Chronicles by Donita K. Paul.
Another intermediate here!
Thanks for the welcome! I am definitely a fellow LoTR fan. Which do you like better, the books or movies? And what is your opinion of the Hobbit? I tried reading the Silmarillion a few years ago and could just never get into it. I may need to retry it again. I will also have to look into Beren and Luthien. It’s so nice to meet you.
Hello! *waves back and smiles*

Fantasy is usually my preferred genre, but, if it’s a good book, I don’t care what genre it’s in. 🙂 Do you have a favorite?
Also, I would totally enjoy reading your book! It sounds really good.
Where does the name Arindown come from? It’s really pretty.
Oh, and, @mischievous-thwapling (great name, btw), I’m not sure how many chapters I’ll have in total. 75? 85? I really don’t know. I also may combine chapters, cut chapters, add chapters, you know, it’s a first draft.
I’d love to hear about your book if you’re sharing.
@joelle-stone, my goal is to write a book that I (and others like me) would pick up at a library and enjoy. I feel like there’s not enough good, interesting, clean, well-written fiction out there. Thanks for your encouragement!
To answer your questions: It’s mostly fantasy with a little medieval/historical fiction incorporated. I’m trying to introduce some simple magic into the book and all the animals are fictional combinations of real animals and things, so that makes it more fantasy. As for the names, the character names are largely from baby name books (I only feel a little weird checking those out from the library… 🙂 ). Place names are actually Latin words, though whenever I combine words (e.g., Insula Nova, Magnum Oppidum, Alta Arborae), I’m probably messing up the correct cases, genders, and whatever. The meanings of the Latin words relate to the place they name. Silva is the country covered in woodlands. Silva is Latin for Forest. The name of a nearby island is the Latin word Undae which means waves.
Also, I would definitely read your book too. 🙂
Thanks everybody for being so welcoming!
Nice to meet you, @melodyjoy! Yes, my middle name is Joy. (Joy is also my mom’s middle name and the middle name of my four sisters 🙂 )
You’ve actually read Kiriath’s Quest!?!? It’s a great book, but I know of only one other person who has read it outside of my family. Rick Barry’s The Methuselah Project is equally or more awesome even than Kiriath’s Quest. If you haven’t read it, you might need to try. The sequel, The Methuselah Project SOS, is released at the end of this month, and I can’t wait to read it. Is anyone else eagerly awaiting the release of a book?
Yes, I have read The Mysterious Benedict Society. I really enjoyed it. We actually listened to it on audio cd as a family when we went on a long drive a few years ago.
It’s so nice to “meet” you all.
@kimlikesart, You ask good questions!
I follow Jesus because he deserves it and because it’s worth it. After all he was willing to do for me, come to earth, live a perfect life, suffer and die a cruel death, why wouldn’t I follow and serve him for the rest of my life?
My favorite book of the Bible would have to be the book of James. My main reasoning behind that is that I have it memorized, so it is more often in my mind than other books. I also love its practicality.
How about you? Why do you follow Christ? Do you have a favorite book of the Bible? Also, what do you write/want to write?
