I’ll try not to repeat from our fellow contributors. Adrenaline is a massive component of pain sensation in severe injuries – people have taken dozens of rounds from handguns and not dropped till minutes later or until a fatal shot completely put them out of commission, and soldiers have sometimes fought on with missing…[Read more]

AND SO I RETURN FROM DEEP CRYOSTASIS.
So, a background in weaponry:
As @rose-colored-fancy pointed out, a longsword is not a heavy weapon. A typical arming sword, or your classic one-handed sword, about 2-3 feet in length, would weigh in around 1-1.2 kilograms, or 2-2.5 pounds. This is the definitive “sword” of the Early and High…[Read more]

AHA!
A rare beta-reader!
Be prepared to be swamped with supplicants.
By the way, I don’t think we’ve met. I tend to lie dormant for weeks / months at a time only to suddenly answer a flurry of weird medical questions on this one particular thread in Fantasy Fiction Writers….
Anyways, I guess I’m primarily a fantasy fiction writer with a…[Read more] -

Aha, a nice, simple question. 🙂
The basic principles of treating bone breaks have changed little over the millennia. Doctors then as now knew to immobilize the limb with splints or a cast and apply traction to give the bone break adequate space to heal the break and generate new bone tissue, and knew of herbs in their era which could…[Read more]

I have seen your previous question, I just haven’t found time to answer questions until very very recently. I.e., today.
And in summary – you are a scary person, and the reason this thread exists. 🙂
Yes, a bandage soaked in the poison would be an effective means of delivering it, assuming it has a non-porous exterior, so…[Read more]

@crazywriter Lol – no I’m not Japanese, I’m Chinese. From what I understand, Japan in WWII is simply not something that is discussed in Japan these days. It’s not openly spoken of as a point of pride. And yes – the Japanese are hardly special in the realm of human brutality. We are all fallen creatures, all equally capable of inhuman cruelty given…[Read more]

I have. It’s part of my cultural heritage. And – without meaning any rude contrariness – as tragic and revolting as it is, it is a subject very much worth studying and researching in its full detail. There is a reason why the issue of Japanese remilitarization is an issue for every Asian country in the Pacific; the atrocities of the…[Read more]

On a side note, the history of prosthetics is rather fascinating. Apart from the silver/copper noses of above, some ancient prosthetics could get pretty creative. The most stunning example was the “Iron Fist” of the German knight Gotz von Berlichingen (who formed the loose basis for a really gritty, awesome medieval fantasy anime), who lived a…[Read more]

Ah, my mistake! I didn’t see the second follow up question. Or maybe I did and I just forgot about it. Thank you for asking again!
A warning in advance – this is some gruesome material. In a nominally related tangent, the Russian word for hospital, Больница (Ballnitza) literally means “house of pain.”
Regarding medieval skin grafts.…[Read more]

Fun little fact, cyanide isn’t just produced for killing people. Apart from cyanide derivatives used in the manufacture of plastics, one of its primary economic purposes is actually the processing of silver and gold ore, as it is one of the few substances capable of dissolving those minerals selectively.
Seems almost poetic. One of the most fatal…[Read more]

Sorry I took so long to make a reply. Life has been crazy, and sadly this response will be a bit less exhaustive than I’d like. Thankfully, Ms. Ryddle here has also chimed in with her own good sense and research, to which I shall add with my own obscure knowledge of how people die. 😛

Inability to feel pain will help him at least psychologically cope, and will make the task of changing his bandages easier. Doesn’t really reduce the risk of infection, but it will make it somewhat easier to care for himself.
Regarding hypertrophic and keloid scars, hypertrophic scars are defined as excessive scars growth which…[Read more]

@naiya-dyani SO, what was it I heard about eye lacerations?
-
Heh, so I might not be using it anymore actually? But the original idea was that I have this character with two scars on his face from a blade. I was wondering how the vision would be affected, and thus his coordination and everything that follows from that, by one of the cuts passing over/through his eye, at surface-level depths. The cuts were…[Read more]

Preface:
Burn wounds are really, really hard to survive. Even today, the mortality rates aren’t great, varying from 3 to 55% based on the extent of the burns and whether or not inhalation injuries occurred (inhaling soot, carbon monoxide, scalding steam, hot smoke / air which physically burned the lungs, etc.) One of the biggest killers besides s…[Read more] -

This question is actually perfectly timed since burn care is on my exam for this week anyways. I’m going to cover this first from a modern nursing perspective and then from a medieval historical perspective, including procedures, materials, and mindset. Forgive me if I repeat any information you already know.
A warning – the full answ…[Read more]

The rumors of my demise have been exaggerated. Not by much, but I am indeed still around. Just. Super. Busy. Studying harder than ever before so I can pass this semester and then go on to earn my RN. For anyone who has doubts about whether this article will “work for me”, or is worried about the extra effort required to first write a short story then turn it into a novel –
It works.
Granted, I did it before this article came out (hipster points for me, I guess), but the process of breaking down my “grand novel” into 10k – 25k chunks and…[Read more] -

Before you read on, I want to be clear about the topic:
I have a character who struggles deeply with sin nature, guilt, and temptation of suicide. So, this is a rather dark subject, and uncomfortable for me as well, who has struggled similarly. But I would appreciate second and third eyes on the subject to help me write ethically, not just…[Read more]
