Samuel replied to the topic How Long Does it Take to Wake Up After Being Knocked Unconscious? in the forum General Writing Discussions 8 years ago
@bigideaskc I think it does take about a minute, and when a person wakes up they are still groggy and suffering from the effects of just having their brain jarred against their skull until it shuts down their consciousness. To do that with just a face blow, however, they would probably have to be struck A) in the bridge of the nose or between the…[Read more]

Samuel replied to the topic Book Recommendations??? in the forum General Writing Discussions 8 years ago
@the-golden-light The Ted Dekker books (The Lost Books series and the Circle) are really good imo, but the Circle series books can get a little mature, especially Green, in terms of romantic content. Nothing totally horrible if you don’t mind half-page smooches, but I wouldn’t let my fourteen-year-old kid read Green. The other three are fine, tho…[Read more]

Samuel replied to the topic In Which *surprise* My MC Decides to be Difficult in the forum Characters 8 years ago
@elizabeth That sounds like a good arc. Maybe if something in the plot actually forced him to believe in the unseen, or something indisputable happens that he can’t see, it would be easier. For example if such a person were sucked into a fantasy world and were forced to face that things exist that he can’t see, i.e. unicorns, trolls…I don’t k…[Read more]

Samuel replied to the topic Hullo and mae govannen, everyone! in the forum Introduce Yourself 8 years ago
@emilys Actually, not yet. I’ve got one or two to go before I get to the one with dragons, but I’m still super excited to write it. My current is about a teen in a high-tech exosuit called the Aster, and it’s basically going to be a fictional autobiography of my last three or so years but in fantasy/electropunk novel form.

@emilys Welcome to the forum! I’m also homeschooled although technically finished unless my writing and music education counts. I’m in the process of outlining a novel and have one sitting in a cardboard box and another being self-published, but both ultra-cringey XD
Editing the living daylights out of your book is great and essential! Most pro…[Read more]

Samuel started the topic Suggested resources (free/online)? in the forum General Writing Discussions 8 years ago
Does anyone know of any writing resources, such as K.M Weiland’s blog (Which, by the way, I highly recommend), that would be good for building my knowledge on the art of writing? Money is an issue so online is preferred. I’m looking for anything I can get my hands on at this point.

Samuel replied to the topic What Genre do YOU Write? in the forum General Writing Discussions 8 years ago
@parker I hear a lot about him too but I can never bring myself to read it for some reason.
I used to write sci-fi/fantasy. Like, the real deal–Spaceships, planets, it had it all. But the catch was that there were no laser-blasters or whatever. Everyone had swords and bows. It was weird. It was cool, but weird.
Now I write primarily fantasy and…[Read more]

Samuel started the topic More than one theme? in the forum Themes 8 years ago
Is it possible to have more than one theme in a novel? And along those lines, is it okay to have more than one moral question/topic in a novel?
In my current novel (which is probably going to be mostly training) I am debating whether or not this would be okay.

@thebookharvester Pokemon isn’t anime…but we can roll with it
I think writing fanfic is actually harder to do than normal writing because you have to work off something someone else has laid out. I have done some though, including LoZ Majora’s Mask, Monster Hunter and Fire Emblem. I generally don’t tho because it doesn’t have much merit other…[Read more]

Samuel replied to the topic Incorporating God Into Fantasy in the forum Themes 8 years ago
@julia I struggle with that as well, I love magic but I have to work with what I believe, and that causes problems. What I did was created something called a “Panthiverse” (copyrights). The story basically goes that there were eleven “Great Beings”, i.e. gods, in the beginning, and they each created a universe and an “Infinity” (what we would call…[Read more]

Samuel replied to the topic Multiple protagonists/Book with no climax? in the forum Characters 8 years ago
@elizabeth I always have questions…
As far as characterization goes, what do you think of “merging” characters, i.e. a brother and sister, with two different personalities yet almost like one protagonist, instead of making one or the other seem like an important side character?

Samuel replied to the topic I have to do world-building on two worlds at once– tips? in the forum Research and Worldbuilding 8 years ago
If you’ve never lived there I think a lot of research is in order. You should research British terms, customs, traditions…Anything you can get. In 1940 the war was about two years in so it wasn’t horrible quite yet, but still bad especially in UK and Germany. I also think weather in London is usually dreary and gray, but…[Read more]

Samuel replied to the topic Multiple protagonists/Book with no climax? in the forum Characters 8 years ago
@elizabeth Well, it WOULD be possible to go back and fix it…But like I said I had little (valuable) writing education at the time, so I didn’t see anything wrong with it until AFTER it was into the self-publishing process. I know, big mistake…I may have to write a second edition later assuming it doesn’t sell well (which I’m hoping it does so…[Read more]

So I have two questions here.
In my book, I have written in I think 6 protagonists. There are also quite a few side characters. This book was written before I actually started to learn creative writing, i.e. before I knew about structure, characterization, etc. Those things all kind of just came, but not as well as they should have and the b…[Read more]
