Jane Maree started the topic {2018 – Week 7} Show Don't Tell (and what that even means) in the forum Annual Theme Discussion 7 years, 9 months ago
I don’t know about you guys but one of the most common pieces of writing advice I’ve heard is “Show, don’t tell.”
It’s also incredibly confusing and hard to piece together what on earth that means. There’s a lot of courses and articles out there telling slightly different versions of what telling is and what showing is, and—let me tell…[Read more]

Okay all, who’s up for looking through Faith’s draft and strengthening some character voice?? If you have ideas or inspiration, head over to the doc and dive into editing the rough draft so that this story can really pop out of the page. 😀
OR if you have a different idea and really really want to write it, go ahead and try your hand at a first…[Read more]

Jane Maree replied to the topic {2018 – Week 6} Describing: Characters' Physical Appearance in the forum Annual Theme Discussion 7 years, 10 months ago
@professorsjb wowzers, you must be so busy!! You go, girl!
I loved that snippet! That actually works pretty well, because you’re telling those appearance details as the POV character notices them, and they notice them very specifically too so it’s totally realistic.

Okay guys, THE NEXT GUILD WAR HAS BEGUN.
For those who haven’t been here for a guild war, here’s a little explanation: a guild war is where each of the guilds competes against the other guilds to try write the best scene/the most words/etc. This week it’s about writing the best scene.
The Challenge:Â write a scene from the point of vi…[Read more]

First off, thank you all SO MUCH for sharing your biggest struggles in last week’s topic. It saved my brain a lot of agony as I tried to think of more topics that would actually be useful. 😛
Thanks to @Faith-Blum ‘s suggestion, we’re going to be looking at description this week. Specifically how to describe a character’s physical appearance,…[Read more]

Jane Maree replied to the topic {2018 – Week 5} What's YOUR biggest struggle with Prose?? in the forum Annual Theme Discussion 7 years, 10 months ago
@faith_blum Argh man, physical descriptions + not sounding forced is pretty much the wooooorst. xD About 80% of the time, I just ignore the physical descriptions all together (which is also a terrible option). >.<
@fctait Ah yep yep, descriptions is another good thing to work on.
@parker Hmm well, I COULD potentially do something about…[Read more]

Okay folks, two things:
a) I’m adhd and today is one of those days where my brain does not want to think, so please forgive me.
b) I don’t know what sort of activity to do today?? Because I don’t know what YOUR struggles are.
So on that note, this week, just want to know what your struggles are with the topic of prose. What would you like t…[Read more]

Jane Maree replied to the topic {2018 – Week 4} Passive voice vs Active voice in the forum Annual Theme Discussion 7 years, 10 months ago
Sorry for tagging you all again, but it’s been brought to my attention by a lovely staff member that I got my head muddled around and I’ve accidentally gotten my passive voice mixed into a bit of showing vs telling in this post.
So, to correct any confusion: “I saw/felt/heard” is NOT passive voice. It’s telling.
Also:Â “My pulse was roaring in…[Read more]

The hem of my dress rustled in the stems of grass as I stepped from the last stair. With so much fabric swathed around my legs, fitting into the coach might be a harder task than it ought. I cleared my throat to dismiss the faint bubble of a laugh that tried to well up.
Laughing on the way to my father’s funeral would not give the right i…[Read more]

The character voice isn’t too bad. A little rough, but that’s probably somewhat to do with the fact that you wrote this so long ago. 😉
