You write really well for having only written seriously for 8 months! It’s kind of been on and off for me . . . I’ve been writing since I was pretty young, but I only started writing more seriously in my teen years. I stopped writing for a couple years, and then started back up a few years ago.
That’s great that you’ve found a plan that…[Read more]

Wow, that is quite a variety! I’ve never heard Korean, Mandarin, or Japanese pop, but it sounds neat!
Lol, Kenma sounds like a dear!

That’s neat! Kiet sounds like an interesting character. I love that advice from your friend, especially that quiet people have two personalities. As a more quiet and introspective person myself, I’ve seen that that’s true. I will think about that as I develop Charlotte.
Charlotte also hides a lot of secrets, and what she says is…[Read more]

It really doesn’t matter to me what it starts with, as long as it’s not a weird letter like “X” or “Z” 😉
I would like his last name to mean something to do with the sea, because he comes from a long line of sea captains and it’s his family’s occupation.

That’s so cool!
That’s fine you don’t have a synopsis yet. It took me a while to figure out mine, and I’m still not sure I’m happy with it. 7000 words is a lot–you should be proud of that! I’ve been planning my story for several years and started writing my first draft in December, so I’ve been working on it for a while. 😉
Nice! I…[Read more]

Kristianne Hassman replied to the topic Help! Story without message! in the forum Fantasy Writers 6 years, 1 month ago
I agree that you don’t need a specifically Christian theme or message, per se. The theme could simply be about the loneliness of a child, about friendship, or about the dangers of lying and pretending (those are just some ideas). The story can still be enjoyable (and God-glorifying!) without a decidedly Christian message.

It makes sense to me, although I’d have to know the context to say for sure. I like it! Now I want to know more about Raven, lol!

Those are some great questions you brought up! That’s very true that even quiet characters have desires and motivations–in fact, my character’s desires are very strong. She wants to protect her young daughter at all costs and live a simple life as a healer.
I haven’t given a lot of thought as to why she’s quiet–although I think…[Read more]

Your response was just as helpful! Those are some great points you made. I like what you said about a quiet character being an anchor for the people around her–because that’s exactly what Charlotte is! It’s not that she doesn’t act or is completely passive–it’s just that she has a simple and unassuming personality that tries to…[Read more]

You brought up some good thoughts here. Charlotte is the kind of character that would think but not say a sarcastic remark because she naturally doesn’t speak her mind and she’s been taught all her life the proper way to act. Although she does also try to think the best of people and give them the benefit of the doubt, so she tries…[Read more]

Those are some great thoughts! I especially like how you brought in the example of Jane Eyre. I will try focusing on her thoughts and observations rather than dialogue.
Thank you!

Sorry, I guess I forgot to really describe him . . .
So my story is a fantasy. It sort of has a medieval mixed with an early to late 1800s setting (If that makes sense??). I’m actually not really sure how to describe it because it’s kind of complex. But really any medieval, English-sounding name would work for him.
He’s pretty tall and…[Read more]

Sure, I love getting to know other people!
I’m from the States, but my family has been missionaries in Africa since I was really little. I’ve lived in Quebec, Cameroon, Benin, and currently I live in South Africa . . . so it’s really hard for me to answer the question of where I’m from, lol!
I’m working on a fantasy novel about a…[Read more]

I like Rydel a lot, and Selena too! She seems like the typical annoying older sister 😀 Great job with the character development and with connecting the first two chapters with this one. I can’t wait to see what happens next!

This will be so helpful! Thank you!
Right now I have a sea captain in my story whom I named Jeremy Dylan, but I don’t really like it. It feels too plain and generic to me, if you know what I mean.
I want his first name to be short but unique. And I want his second name to mean something related to the sea.
Do you have any…[Read more]

Ooh, I really like how the story is going! Alyce seems like a very interesting character.
“There slowly walking through the hall, unaware that anyone was here, was Brian DeGribler, Cavensburg’s best army official.”
This sentence feels a little awkward. Maybe it might work better if you started with Brian DeGribler as the subject: “…[Read more]

That’s a great opening! It definitely pulls me in and makes me want to find out what happens next.
I just have one suggestion:
The flashback and amount of detail kind of slow down the pacing of the story. I would imagine that a scene like this would have a more urgent, panicked feel to it. I would suggest using shorter, choppier…[Read more]
