As a writer who started young, what @Briannastorm says is 100 percent correct. π
I’d recommendΒ anything by K.M. Weiland. Though I haven’t read many of her craft books, her site is gold.
CraftingΒ Dynamic Dialogue from Writer’s DigestΒ is prettyΒ good craft-wise. I’m currently reading through The Emotional Craft of FictionΒ and am enjoying it.Β …[Read more]

If you’re looking for something paid, Josiah has created a bunch of courses on writing through his Ink Slingers academy: https://josiahdegraaf.teachable.com/.Β I’m not sure when enrolment for the courses are open, butΒ I’ve taken about half of Theme Mastery, and it’s pretty great. π
Other than that, there are good craft books out there you can b…[Read more]

Generally, writers build up to a tense situation like the one my example character faced. During such a build up, they would have room to set up the mood, draw readers in, etc. By the time readers reach a tense portion, they already have a sense of the mood and will likely care more about the outcome of the situation then Oliver’s every movement.…[Read more]

Hey friends! I’ve got a brief tip regarding info dumps for ya.
For an info dump to grab readers attention, it has to be important. One of the best ways to make a bunch of information meaningful is by adding emotion.
Perhaps a scale-covered wolf the size of a horse inhabits the woods somewhere in your MC’s world. You need to tell readers that…[Read more]

Don’t feel bad! Just reading them is still putting in effort, even if you don’t have tons to say. π I believe we chose number one, with the computer watching an author kill a character.

I really needed this! But I think the second piece might be *too* sparse. I liked the first one better. It really brought out the mood. Yes, some details–like him using his right hand–might be irrelevant. But “He struggled to notch the arrow” is bland and dry.

During such a build up, they would have room to set up the mood, draw readers in, etc. By the time readers reach a tense portion, they already have a sense of the mood and will likely care more about the outcome of the situation then Oliver’s every movement.
However, everyone has their own preference when it comes to details :). The goal was to show readers how to keep readers from being confused by decluttering their action scenes by taking out floating body parts and tiny details that distract from the overall conflict, not show readers exactly how they must write. If all writers decided to write details the same way or add them at the same place, it would be rather repetitive. π
Thanks for reading and commenting! π

This was so helpful! I absolutely love doing really descriptive writing and using lots of metaphors, similes and unique descriptions. But I feel like it can easily get too descriptive and over-the-top, so I will definitely be using your tips!!!
