Hey friends! I’ve got a brief tip regarding info dumps for ya.
For an info dump to grab readers attention, it has to be important. One of the best ways to make a bunch of information meaningful is by adding emotion.
Perhaps a scale-covered wolf the size of a horse inhabits the woods somewhere in your MC’s world. You need to tell readers that this creature has acid-like saliva, nearly impenetrable armor, and has been a scourge upon the land since the dawn of the earliest kings. In fact, it killed the first king to ever rule the land. Simply stating those facts can be boring and forgettable.
Having your MC’s mentor pull up his sleeve, show off a scar, and tell the story of how he failed to save his brother from said wolf makes that information emotional. Meaningful.
Even better, don’t have the MC’s mentor tell his story. Have him makes the main character swear he won’t go near the creatures. Show his tension, his concern, his hatred for the beasts as he describes them, as he shares their history. That will drag readers in because they sense there’s something they aren’t being told, but don’t know about.
That’s all I’ve got for you this week! If you’d like to read more about info dumps, here’s a thing: https://kingdompen.org/how-to-avoid-info-dumps/
