Sam Kowal replied to the topic How do you write the aftermath of a betrayal? in the forum Characters 1 year, 5 months ago
The short term reaction would probably anger, frustration, and the character berating themselves for having associated with/been friends with the betrayer. And in the long term, maybe the main character will become more distrustful of anyone else who comes into her life.

Sam Kowal commented on the post, How Should Christian Authors Depict Swearing? 6 years ago
It’s nice to read an article about this that is so straightforward and clear. This is a tough topic to navigate sometimes.
On the one hand, we have verses like “Let there be no filthiness nor foolish talk nor crude joking, which are out of place, but instead let there be thanksgiving”, from Ephesians, which command Christians to abstain from s…[Read more]

Hey Emberlings,
I was just recently watching a video essay about the movie Batman Begins and what writers should learn from it. It was really helpful to me in thinking about some of the most important aspects of storytelling; theme, plot, and conflict, so I thought I’d pass it on in case it would help anyone else.

It’s…epic. A page like that was actually something I had in mind to improve the guilds. As it was, I didn’t even know what guilds existed and the history of the guild wars. I love the emblems for each guild, too

Sam Kowal commented on the post, How Should Christian Authors Depict Darkness? 6 years ago
The idea of looking to Scripture to see how to portray darkness is definitely helpful. The decision to portray darkness and actually executing that can be pretty different sometimes, so it’s nice to have examples of how Scripture does that.

Sam Kowal commented on the post, Dear Christian Novelists: Cleanness Is Not Next to Godliness 6 years ago
The fact Christians in some cases seem very afraid to examine these topics, yet Scripture often freely addresses them, has been on my mind for some time regarding how they should be studied in fiction. Portraying the world as it is, without brushing over the parts that make us uncomfortable, makes the glory of God stand out all the brighter.

@gabriellepollack
I understand if you have to remove me from the guild, although I’d like to stay. With how busy I am, I can’t promise that I’m going to be active enough to fully participate in the guild like the guildmasters want, although I am going to try to post at least once a week and unless something changes, stay. -

This must be one of the best short stories I’ve read. Since. I. Could. Read.

Sam Kowal replied to the topic Topic #16 in the forum Announcements 6 years, 2 months ago
@gabriellepollack There’s definitely a sense of that, when you write, you’re imbuing part of yourself in your words. Thus, the emotions that you communicate can in a way be a part of who you are or how you see the world. Putting those on the page can reveal those in a way that you feel exposed, and it’s easy to feel fear when you’re exposed.

😀 Hello everyone, Sam here wondering how to do magic?
For any of you who write fantasy and include magic systems, I thought I’d see if you have any advice for creating original magic systems. Recently, I’ve created about five new magic systems for my fantasy WIP, and have been toying with the pros and cons of each of them, but I don’t love any…[Read more]

@daeus-lamb If you could share the giveaway on different blogs, that’d give it a huge boost. Even just a few bloggers could give you a whole new audience to share the giveaway with. Of course, I’m not sure what the incentive for the bloggers would be, unless somehow you could give them the extra signup points for referring someone from their blog…
