I don’t think you caught the distinction I was drawing in my post. There’s a difference between entering a creativity-oriented profession solely for the money vs. accepting a single, short-term job because you need the income. Freelance writers and editors aren’t tied to one employer. Over the course of a year, a freelancer will (typi…[Read more]

I’m going to jump into this discussion even though I wasn’t invited, because I’ve wrestled with this question as an editor. 😉
I don’t see anything morally wrong with doing a certain job for the sake of supporting yourself/your family or to supplement the income from endeavors you’re passionate about but aren’t as lucrative. My association…[Read more]

Here’s an article with thorough descriptions of the different types of publishers and an especially detailed list of reasons to be wary of vanity publishers:

Hope that helps! 🙂

By the way, it’s MUCH more expensive to traditionally publish a book than to self-publish it.
Traditional publishing doesn’t cost a cent. If your publisher has asked you for money, it’s not a traditional publishing deal but likely a vanity publisher. A traditional publisher will pay you rather than the other way around.

Brianna Storm Hilvety replied to the topic Looking for laptop recommendations in the forum General Writing Discussions 7 years, 10 months ago
@kate I much prefer tablets over laptops, and I do 90% of my work (Story Embers, editing projects, graphic design, email, etc.) on a 10.5” iPad Pro. I love its portability and versatility. However, I do own an HP Pavilion laptop that I bought five years ago. It has served me well, aside from overheating once (which was my own fault since I was u…[Read more]

I love my character’s lines. They’re so accurate. 😜
Pennsylvania’s eyes widened. “Hey, how many times do I have to tell you that this is an action—”
“Let it go. I’ll edit it out later.” Storm rolled her eyes as Edna glared at him for his impudence.
Pennsylvania fell on his knees and covered his face. “Why? Why must two innocent, guiltless…

Which of C.S. Lewis’s books is your favorite? The Chronicles of Narnia spawned my lifelong love of fantasy. 🙂

@bella-d I’ve read Pearl Maiden and The Hidden Hand. 🙂 Both are excellent books.
Fantasy is my favorite genre, but I’ve recently developed a love for Jody Hedlund’s historical novels.
I’m a professional editor, so I don’t have any large writing projects in progress, although I occasionally pen short stories and articles. Most of my time is d…[Read more]

@corkybookworm Hedlund’s knight series that begins with An Uncertain Choice is one of my favorites! So that’s a good one to start with. 👍🏻 I’m currently reading the final novel in the series (A Loyal Heart), which was recently released. 🙂

@scribbles Oooh, I love the book analogy! I’d probably be a deep purple volume on a shelf tucked away in a corner that longs to be read, but whose cover can only be unlocked and opened by a select few deemed trustworthy.

That sentence is fine as is. Dialogue doesn’t have to be 100% grammatically correct (particularly with characters like Emiel), because real people don’t talk that way.

@bekks2017 That’s fantabulous! 😎 How long is your novel?
Is Story Embers the first place you happened across me as an editor, or did you hear about me from some other source? I’m a member of YWW, but I’m not very active due to time constraints, so I can’t imagine you’ve bumped into me there. 😛 I’m always curious how people come to find and hi…[Read more]
