Step 1; bang your head on the keyboard, it should look something like this; dlkfjelksfhlekhfsek. Step 2; begin spacing letters and adding vowels and you find names; dilk fjel kesfhl ekhef sek. Step 3; this method has never worked for me :P. Or…what I like doing more is fiddling with traditional fantasy creature names and give new spins, like mud goblins and bush fae. Or you mix two or more animal names the fantasy creature is based off or the adjectives that describe it and then mix and mush the words; merecat+dog=meredog, or fox+feline=werfock (were-fox creatively spelled)

Ha! I love the bang-head-on-keyboard technique. Sounds like a fun way to name animals!

Okay, I don’t have experience with naming animals, but I’ve named quite a few places, objects, weapons, etc. My favorite method involves Google Translate. I type in a relevant word and translate it into a bunch of languages (I usually pick a theme, like middle-eastern languages, whatever suits your world.) Until I find a word that sounds good, and then I might change the spelling a bit. It’s proved quite dependable so far! It’s rendered country names like Tirbren (Hill-land, Welsh) Terrenpla (Flat-land, in Catalan, I think?) and Yerasht (Wilderness in.. Turkish?). The names sound quite unoriginal when you translate them, but it sounds cool if you mix and match a bit.

Thanks! Those names sound cool to me so I have a feeling I’m going to like this technique.😁

Gwendolyn cut down foe after foe. The ground was littered with the fallen and wounded. Liorah hobbled up and helped Gwendolyn cut down the monsters flooding the exit.

“Get back, you’re hurt. I’ll keep it open and pull the lever when the others get here.” Liorah said, her voice thick with pain. Gwendolyn glanced at her and then down at her leg. “I’m fine. Go,” Liorah hissed then burst out in forced, mangled laughter. Most of the beasts shrank back but a few where to hungry for blood to stop. They hissed and fought harder.

Gwendolyn glanced back at the cave. Wylo, Kiark, Rosario, and Ehud where safe inside. Wylo, Kiark, and Ehud where hurt and Rosario was helping them.

She cut down a giant mole and ducked a swipe from a beaver with horns.

She wanted to turn and run. To care only for herself and get out of there. But right now, they needed each other. If they separated they would all die. Safety in numbers.

“No,” Gwendolyn growled. ” I’ll stay here until everyone is in. ”

She doubted Liorah would make it long with her bad leg. And she doubted she would make it long with her bad shoulder. But if they fought together, maybe they could hold back the enemy long enough. Maybe.

“GET IN HERE NOW!” Gwendolyn roared at the remaining people outside .

        @everyone,

Good posts, you guys! This will be fun… 😛

        ———————————————-

“Riure,” a deep voice rumbled. Dragon! “It’s Konyar here. Do you need help getting down?” Riure laughed. Wasn’t it obvious? Konyar seemed to realize that. “Okay, I’m going to allow you to climb down my neck then onto my back. Is that fine? Or would there be an easier way?”

“Everyone get inside!” someone yelled. Female, seemed to match the voice that had shouted below Riure as she tried her best to laugh as contagiously as possible. “Hurry!”

Riure bit her lip, her flow of laughter ceasing. Riding a dragon? Her? That was in her dreams only. Could she really- Was she seriously allowed to- Would she be able- Too many questions. Giving a nod, Riure slipped the tablet into her belt, hoping it would stay. Losing it would not be good. “I think it’s the best idea.”

Konyar puffed a bit of warm air onto her face, and Riure smiled. She stepped forward tentatively, wishing Sadiq was there to give her confidence.

Sadiq. Where was she? Hopefully not dead.

“Almost there,” Konyar murmured, and Riure bent to feel her way forward. Her fingertips contacted smooth scales, and she slowly lifted her leg over Konyar’s neck.

Excitement tingled through all of her veins. She, Riure, the nobody, was going to ride a dragon!

That was when she slipped. With a scream, Riure slid down the length of Konyar’s neck (does he have spikes on it? I didn’t know, so I made up the most convenient thing. ;)), coming to a stop on his broad back. She toppled down his side with a yelp, sure she was about to hit the ground, but instead a leathery wing blocked her fall. She lay there for a second, trying to get her bearings. Which way was up, or down? Left or right? Boy, she really needed Sadiq right now.

“Thanks,” Riure finally managed with a small giggle. Konyar shifted as if he were standing on three legs for an instant. There was a animalistic cry of pain as he probably attacked something.

        “Any time,” Konyar replied easily.

Riure found the part of his body that sloped partly upward, then situated herself in the center of Konyar’s back, folded her legs, and took a deep breath, allowing a grin to take over her face. There was no way she was going to be killed now, not with a dragon on her side. At least, no way she was going to be killed yet. That was such a happy thought. She laughed at her mind’s sarcastic-ness.

“Ready?” Konyar asked, and she felt the muscles in his neck twist around as he looked over his shoulder at her.

“Ready,” Riure answered determinedly. “Erm, can you see my dog anywhere? She’s black and white, and pretty big.”

Konyar was silent for a moment. Dread knotted Riure’s gut.

“Yes,” the dragon finally said slowly. “She’s not moving. I’m sorry.”

“Can we check?” Riure asked, unable to keep the panic from rising in her voice.

Konyar began to move, and Riure gripped his scales as much as she could, trying to get used to his pace. Judging from the small sounds and airflow around her, she’d guess he’d kept his wings folded in a way that would prevent her from falling off, for which she was grateful.

They stopped a moment later, and Riure fought to keep her balance as Konyar’s tail swished, he bent, straightened, and twisted. He was clearly fighting while trying to get to Sadiq. She hoped.

Doing her best to help, Riure squeaked out a little laughter. A howl to her right greeted her call. Good. Hopefully this would work with whatever Lord Castle threw at them.

A moment later, something furry slid into place in front of Riure. Her heart leapt into her throat, then plummeted into her toes.

“Hang on,” Konyar rumbled as he turned and quickened his pace in another direction. Probably the inside the girl had shouted about earlier.

Riure’s nimble fingers ran over the thing in front of her. She quickly recognized Sadiq’s coarse fur, matted with blood, and her elegant snout and long legs. Thankfully, the dog was still warm, which meant that if Sadiq was dead, it hadn’t happened long ago.

“You’re going to have to get off here,” Konyar said gently. “We’re too big to fit in as dragons.”

We. The female dragon – Rilyn, if Riure remembered right – was probably with them.

Speechless, Riure nodded, and a moment later a careful talon wrapped around her waist. The world moved, tilted, and then her feet were on solid ground. Air swirled around her, then Konyar said – in a much higher and smoother voice, he was in mankind form now – “I’ve got Sadiq. Hold onto my arm and I’ll guide you into the cave.”

Riure ran her hand lightly over his shoulder and down his arm until she found his forearm. Something furry brushed against her hand, and she felt Sadiq’s wet snout. Konyar was carrying her. “Thanks,” Riure said gratefully.

They hurried past what sounded like a horde of creatures, a growling dragon arguing with Princess Liorah about something like “a lever: and “guarding an entrance” and “wounded”, and finally into a cool, enclosed space, much smaller than the other.

Konyar led her through the people gathered there to a spot by a wall made of cold, slick stone, not nearly as smooth as the first. He bent and deposited Sadiq on the floor, then murmured a few words to Riure she didn’t really hear, and left.

The metallic smell of blood permeated the air, as well as the furiously strong emotions of anger, fear, and confusion. Riure didn’t care about that nor the many conversations going on around her right now – all she wanted was for Sadiq to not be dead.

Please Kening, please please please, she begged as tears began to slide down her cheeks. She didn’t care about those either. Let the others see that she was crying. Then maybe they’d stop their childish bickering. Riure surprised herself with that thought so much that she nearly stopped crying. She hardly ever thought that way about other people.

Sighing, she turned her attention to the mound of warm fur in front of her knees. She put her palms on Sadiq’s belly, quickly running her right one up to the dog’s chest. Riure held her breath as she found the place between Sadiq’s shoulders she loved to pet, and leaned over and placed her ear against Sadiq’s welcoming fur. Please, please, please.

        Thump. Thump thump. Thump.

Riure couldn’t help the relieved tears and hiccups that flowed afterward. Sadiq’s heart was still beating, even though she wasn’t responsive right now. Thank you, Kening!! Thank you.

After examining Sadiq thoroughly, Riure found that Sadiq’s main problem was a long slash running from her right shoulder nearly to her flank. Blood knotted the fur around it and leaked from it in a slow stream. Riure felt it on her fingers when she explored the cut, dripping onto her other hand as it soothingly rubbed Sadiq’s belly, in her favorite spot.

The dog was covered in other, smaller scratches and bruises, but as far as Riure could tell, they would all heal. If only Asor were here! she couldn’t help thinking. His powers could heal Sadiq in a matter of hours.

But the Arthro was not there, and neither were his powers. Riure wiped her face with the back of her hand, flicking her hair away from her eyes. No doubt she’d left a bloody streak on her forehead, but why bother with cleaning up?

Thank goodness Lytt had taught her a few basic healing arts. The Feathered Ave had also insisted on Riure wearing the small pouch that hung from her belt anywhere she went. Lytt had always worried that Riure would fall or get lost or attacked or something while she was not around.

A shaky smile working its way through her many tears, Riure dug in her pouch with her least-bloody hand. There! A tightly folded square of cloth used to wrap wounds and stop bleeding. Pulling it out, Riure ripped the thin fabric into strips and expertly bound Sadiq’s middle as much as she could. The fabric didn’t quite cover the ugly gash, but it served to stop the bleeding in the worst places.

She’d no sooner finished when Sadiq stirred, whining slightly. Riure’s heart broke at the sound, and her tears flowed all the more freely.

“Don’t worry, loyal friend,” Riure whispered, scooting around to let Sadiq’s head rest in her lap. “I’m here.”

Sadiq whined again, softly, and Riure stroked her head. “I’m here,” she murmured, over and over as she soothingly smoothed Sadiq’s fur, one hand resting on Sadiq’s stomach. Only when the dog’s breathing became smooth and even, indicating sleep, did Riure let her hand drop to her lap. She was exhausted, and her throat hurt from laughing crazily then crying. She was starting to get a headache.

Moving so her back was to the wall, Riure curled her knees to her chest and put her head on them. Let everyone else figure stuff out, she thought drowsily. I’m ready to go home.

And then she cried more, because she missed VaSerBo.

        ———————————————

And on that really sad note we end. Sorry not only for the length but for burdening our group with a injured dog who probably won’t be able to walk and who has a mistress who will NOT leave her behind. *grimace*

Thank you so much! You’re doing a great job with Kiark and Wylo! I usually struggle with battle scenes, so I’m glad you like it!

Thank you!!! 😀 And I never would have known that you struggled with battle scenes had you not told me!

Also, poison is an amazing idea! I can’t wait to see how that works out!

Ha ha, thank you! I get my best ideas when I’m not trying to think of any, so that was one of them. 😛 Also, Liorah is so tough; and she was thinking what I would be thinking while tying up a bloodied leg. Love it 🙂

Btw, both your’s and @this-is-not-an-aliens ‘s name-finding ideas are very helpful! I struggle with that sort of stuff too 😉

She doubted Liorah would make it long with her bad leg. And she doubted she would make it long with her bad shoulder. But if they fought together, maybe they could hold back the enemy long enough. Maybe.

I love that bit, just sayin’! 😀

          @joelle-stone

Oh, I am so glad Sadiq is still alive!! I was a bit worried there. Having her wounded and Riure refusing to leave her will make for some very interesting interaction 😉 I am also relieved that I am not the only one with long posts, phew!

          @everyone

Wanna bet that Ehud will be the first one to comfort Riure? 😛

            WYLO

Kiark is still lying beside me, completely unconscious. I don’t really know what to do, so I reach into my coat and pull out my little vial. It is dark maroon with a cork cap. I unplug it, gently pry open his mouth, and pour in some of the shining yellow liquid. It is a pain-killer and anti-infectant. I used it to help the Baneronians, and some of them thought that I worked black magic. Magic or not, I hope that it helps my nephew.

I look up as the male-dragon-boy walks into the tunnel carrying a limp dog, followed closely by the blind-girl. She sits down by the body of her furry friend and starts to caress and bandage the animal. I fight away the searing pain in my leg — praying that that creature who bit me didn’t have any poison — and lift the vial to my lips.

Then I hear the dog whine.

The girl is crying softly, and my heart twists. I still hear the sound of battle from the mouth of the corridor, and feel a twinge of guilt that I’m not out there. For some reason or other, I lower the vial and wrap my hands around it, staring at the wall across from me.

All I ever wanted to do was to help my people. I didn’t like to see suffering.

But it was really for selfish, careless reasons. You are a fool, Wylo.

It may be too late for me; I may never earn redemption. But that doesn’t mean I have to have a heart of stone. Look; Kiark is in here, not out there.

That potion is priceless right now. You would be mad to give some away — as you already did.

I may have killed the soul inside my brother, but I haven’t quite killed mine.

It’s a dog. Save it then for the humans, those with souls.

That girl can’t function without that dog. So I’ll still be saving a soul.

Years all alone have softened your heart, not hardened it, you madman.

When you’re alone, you can ponder and think. Think I have, and pondered I’ve done. I still simmer against my brother, but yet….

Stiffly, I get to my feet, and put a hand against the wall. I look at the girl, with her head on her knees, and my heart hurts. There was a time when I would have walked up to her, if she were on the street, and helped her, if only for selfish reasons. If only for selfish reasons… it seems that is the only reason why man ever does anything.

I walk the several paces to her, then crouch down and clear my throat. She looks up at me with clear, shining eyes, and I feel my heart leap in my chest and my throat close up. I can’t say anything, and I can’t look her in the eyes, even though they are unseeing. The dog has a long gash along its side, which the girl did a good job of bandaging up. Her nifty little fingers are skillful.

I take the vial and hold it under her nose; it doesn’t smell the greatest, but it isn’t quite terrible. I force a few words out in a hoarse voice: “medicine. For the dog. Just, just put a little in her mouth.”

I pray she doesn’t think it is poison. Then, I wonder what I’ve done, giving away that precious liquid. But in my heart, somewhere, I know it’s right. I know that someone is whispering and telling me that its right, and maybe, just maybe, it’s the Creator.

But would such a holy, blameless one speak to me, the murderer of all the good in Banerow?

            ****************************************************************************************************

Ok, looks like I lost my own bet, ha ha 😛 I didn’t even know Wylo was going to do that till I sat down to write it.

I light the arrow, pull the bow,

Thank you!!!   And I never would have known that you struggled with battle scenes had you not told me!

Thank you! When I read my first battle scenes, I cringe. A lot. So that means I’ve improved, right? XD

Ha ha, thank you! I get my best ideas when I’m not trying to think of any, so that was one of them.   Also, Liorah is so tough; and she was thinking what I would be thinking while tying up a bloodied leg. Love it

I totally get that! I get my best ideas while thinking idly. The burning fabric thing for example. That was a complete accident.  And thank you! I’m glad you like that part! Liorah’s toughness is one of my favorite things about her. Not because she is tough, but why. It’s quite interesting (to me, of course, XD)

At this time (Before the start of the first book, and during the first book) Liorah has this idea of invincibility stuck in her head.

Probably because: A, she’s a princess and nothing terrible has ever happened to her and she commands a lot of respect. B, she simply needs it to be true because she has other goals and has this constant idea that everyone else is more valuable than her. I could go into that a lot more, but that’s enough character psychology. (Hope I didn’t bore you on that side-track! XD)

Btw, both your’s and @this-is-not-an-aliens ‘s name-finding ideas are very helpful! I struggle with that sort of stuff too

              I’m glad it was helpful!

Just wanted to add, this last part about Wylo is fascinating!! I’m really starting to get an interest in him as a character! He has so much inner conflict! I love it!

              @joelle-stone

Sorry not only for the length but for burdening our group with a injured dog who probably won’t be able to walk and who has a mistress who will NOT leave her behind. *grimace*

Don’t apologize! I LOVE it! It’ll make things a bit tougher for our characters and that’s always a good thing! Besides, killing off the pet is the worst!

I have one firm rule in my stories: The pets are invincible and immortal. The horses can go through battles without getting hurt, even as I mercilessly wound my favorite characters. And the dogs, cats, and ravens (Yes, one of my characters has a raven as a pet. It’s really fun!) never die. The animals don’t deserve any of the troubles my characters do. XD

And now I have to write Liorah reacting to dragons!! Remember, her world doesn’t have any fantasy animals/ magic, so she’s completely unfamiliar with it. This is going to be fun XD

                Liorah

No,” Bow-girl growled, “I’ll stay here until everyone is in.”

I shot a swift glare at the stubborn girl before dismissing the matter. I didn’t feel like convincing her, and I’d tried my best.

The wounds on my arms burned as I sliced my scimitar through beast after beast. They didn’t stop coming but flooded on in a mass of teeth and claws.

“Get in here now!” The girl roared at everyone still outside the cave. It seemed to help. The blind girl slid down the lizard-thing’s neck and landed on his back. He stretched out wings to shield her from the beasts as he fought his way through the beasts. They headed in the opposite direction. Why for heaven’s sake?

I caught a glimpse of brown (?) fur. Of course, the dog. That girl needed the dog. The lizard-like creatures waded through the beasts and stood near the entrance. I eyed them, half in concern, half in curiosity. I’d never seen anything like them.
“They won’t fit in the passage,” I hissed at the Bow-girl.

Then, the impossible happened. The blind girl slid off the creature’s back, and only seconds later, it morphed into a boy. I yelped and stumbled back a few steps, my leg protesting.

                “I’m fairly sure that’s impossible,” I muttered.

I deliberately placed some of my weight on my wounded leg and regretted it immediately. Burning waves of pain bolted through my leg, all the way through me. Sparks danced before my eyes like stars in the desert night. I thought I was going to faint and half- stumbled.

Okay, it was definitely not a dream. It hurt too much for a dream, and besides, I’d never fainted in a dream, though that might be quite interesting.

The other creature changed into a girl and both entered the cave, the boy carrying the dog. I was still staring at them, not believing my eyes.

“Well, that was unexpected,” I mumbled.

                __________

Awesome job everyone! Can’t wait to see what you all come up with!

Cathy, it’s so sad that no one takes Ehud seriously! And a glow-in-the-dark pink pony…. you are hysterical!

Lol, not that it’s painful in character or anything 😛 (I just love working with him, I love it I love it, I just never know what he’s gonna do next). And it is so sad nobody takes him seriously but I guess everybody has that thing 🙁

                  @this-is-not-an-alien

“Octopuses are living sticky tacks! Beauty and the Beast and Pride and Prejudice are the same story in different eras! And no vampires could survive Italy!”

Oh, my goodness! That’s hilarious! I mean, he’s not wrong. Ehud is the best!

Second; you’re cute, Ehud,” she said crisply “deal with it.”

Truer words have never been spoken! Ehud is adorable. That’s just a fact. As proof:

He was holding glow-in-the-dark pony with a broken leg that was–you guessed it–bright pink. Beaming he stared up at her, and caught her expression.

Any person who carries a bright pink glow-in-the-dark pony in their pocket as a matter of routine is adorable.

Also, Rosario and Ehud together are amazing, I just love their interactions!

I was curious, do you have a plot for them yet, or are they just loose characters for now? Have you started writing yet?

Ikr! I do have a sketchy plot for them and once it starts rolling I’m hoping to publish it as a webtoon series. In fact the plot is about as well plotted as you’d expect if Ehud were writing the plot 😛 It began as a draft my brother wrote and asked me to read, it was about an ace pilot, who nobody trusts because he’s half Anakaran (the enemy country), on a mission to safely transport the princess of that country before she gets kidnapped by the Anakara flying country and it was a pretty neat plot and so I asked if I could co-write with him and Ehud and his brother Enoch were originally pretty minor characters and I’m kinda a lot like Ehud when it comes to brainstorming so now there’s a spy family and international espionage and basically I’m details he’s structure and as soon as I can get that dagfusticated Nanowrimo whatamabob to work I can actually start writing with my brother!

To be a light to the world you must shine in the darkness.

One of the members–the girl with the sling?–tossed a water-skin to Rosario. She estimated how long that would last; probably not even a day. Carefully rationed it would still hardly last past a week maybe.
“Make it last. It’s all I have. Make sure the others get some, I think Kiark, Bow-girl, and Silver-suit need it pretty badly.” She proceeded to tear strips of cloth. Rosario nodded, unable to find the bandages Ehud usually kept in his pockets, he’d probably used them all.
“Get them and yourself to the far side of the passage away from the opening…” In the middle of Rosario speaking she had already left and was yelling at Gwen to get back. Of all obstinate humans, Rosario thought it as if it were an oath. With a monstrous, whinnying laugh she scared off several of the beasts so Rosario decided to leave her to her stubbornness for the moment filing it away as something to be aware of when giving orders.

While Rosario fumbled through Ehud’s pockets he froze awkwardly, not really sure why because it was so routine for her. He had really missed that, he’d really really really missed her. Since they’d met he’d never been away from her for more than a week and it had been months…Ehud was glad the only light in the cave was bright pink because no one would know his cheeks were pink to the tips of his ears. For some reason he stared at her talking to Princess Dramatic Liorah all the while turning redder and redder and he couldn’t express why and he couldn’t stop thinking about how much he really missed Rosario and…A low sob cut through his thoughts. It was Riure and she was cradling her injured dog.
“Here, carino, will you bandage the–” Too late, Ehud was already tumbling after the blind girl.
“I’m so sorry, I thought he’d gotten out ok but I forgot about him after…I’m sorry…” Dropping to the ground beside her he wrapped his arms around the girl and gently pressed her close letting her cry into his shoulder. Carefully Rosario came after him and studied the scene. She wasn’t sure what to do about emotions but Ehud seemed to know what he was doing and she wanted to figure it out.
                    “It’s a dog…” she stated slowly
“It’s not just any dog it’s gotta have been a part of her life for years and years.” Ehud protested
“But it’s a dog?” Rosario repeated, looking at it. “I don’t think it’s about to die.”
Certainly it was pretty badly injured but so were a lot of people here. Why were they so upset about the dog? Weren’t humans more important, and no one was crying about each other’s injuries? Ehud stared up into her.
“Just because isn’t logical it doesn’t mean it doesn’t make sense, Rosy.”
Rosario surveyed the scene again and shook her head because it wasn’t at all rational, any more than the moral and social code she programmed into herself from watching others. Right and wrong didn’t make any sense but she went ahead and did it so she knelt over the dog and examined it. Finally she decided to lightly pat it until Sadiq whined, then she lifted her hand and stared at it again.

To be a light to the world you must shine in the darkness.

I can’t wait to find out more about Rilyn and Konyar. They sound awesome in your summary!

Aw, thank you!!! (Honestly, I can’t wait to find out more about them, lol! They’re pretty under-developed right now)

Thank you! When I read my first battle scenes, I cringe. A lot. So that means I’ve improved, right? XD

Ha ha, you’re right! I don’t really want to go back and read all my old attempts at writing…. I’m afraid I’ll mentally scar myself 😛

And that character psychology is great! Not boring at all, and probably a lot more concise than anything I’ve ever tried explaining, lol. That she thinks other people are more important is very good, and it sounds a bit like some of her worldview; which I know is very important but have such a hard time coming up with for my characters.

Just wanted to add, this last part about Wylo is fascinating!! I’m really starting to get an interest in him as a character! He has so much inner conflict! I love it!

Aw, thanks!! Personally, I have a soft spot for him — as I do must villains. Like Darth Vader — don’t let me get started, but he is one of my most favorite characters in Star Wars and — Back to topic: Wylo does have a lot of conflict, and I realize that he has to bc of how complicated his back-story is. He’s not your typical villain — as in full-of-hatred-and-ready-to-kill-all-in-his-path. I get that mixed into the story with Waynot, ha ha. I like to think of Wylo as an average person; hurt and confused, trying to work out his life and his sins.

Ok… see?! I LOVE character psychology; so don’t be afraid to drown me in it! 😛 I love hearing other peoples’ ideas!

                          @this-is-not-an-alien

Lol, not that it’s painful in character or anything   (I just love working with him, I love it I love it, I just never know what he’s gonna do next). And it is so sad nobody takes him seriously but I guess everybody has that thing

I love it when characters just take over; it really shows that they are people! And yes, everybody has their not-taken-seriously moments, lol

Reading Ehud’s and Rosario’s stark-different reactions to Sadiq were very interesting and thought provoking! They really are complete opposites 😛

Ha ha, right?! And he did rush to her after Wylo did, so I was partly right 😀

Riure stiffened as footsteps approached. She wasn’t sure why she was so tense; maybe she was just high-strung after a certain stressful/adrenaline-pouring/extremely-frightening-to-a-young-blind-girl event.

The person – male, she’d guess by his heavier, slower footsteps – stopped by her, then crouched with a whoosh of air. He/she cleared their throat – aha, it was a male! – expectantly, seeming to find it difficult to speak. Riure looked up in his general direction. If this was Ehud, she’d have known by now. So who else was it? Konyar? Most certainly not. King Kami? Possibly, but he had exuded confidence whereas this person seemed unsure. Eltar? She’d never met him, but Wen had mentioned him and she was pretty sure she’d heard his voice once or twice. The “Great Points of Crone” person? Doubtful.

A bitter scent wafted into her nostrils, appallingly disgusting, and Riure fought the urge to jerk backward. Was this a trap? Was it another creature she’d thought was a man?

“Medicine,” the man said huskily. It was a voice she’d never heard before. “For the dog.” Riure’s heart melted. He cared. He actually cared, a complete stranger. She worked hard not to cry again, instead forcing a shaky, grateful smile. “Just, just pour it into her mouth,” the man finished, uncertainty warbling in his tone.

“Thank you,” Riure whispered, and her smile became genuine. She gently put her fingers around the container – small, and glass, pretty full by the feel of it – and mentally blessed the person who had given it. Medicine was precious, and few people would dare give it away for an animal.

“I’m so sorry, I thought he’d gotten out ok but I forgot about him after…I’m sorry…” Ehud. He’d come. She should have known her crying would attract him. With a thump and flow of air, he plopped down beside her. Warm arms wrapped round her shoulders, and she felt herself drawn into an embrace – not quick and excited, like before, but gentle and caring. Riure couldn’t stem the tears that silently flowed down her face, soaking Ehud’s shoulder. His hair brushed against her face, and she could feel the emotion trembling through him.
Soft footsteps drew near. “It’s a dog…” Rosario said slowly, confusion in her disbelieving tone.

“It’s not just any dog,” Ehud shot back quickly. Riure was surprised he was willing to defend Sadiq. “-it’s gotta have been a part of her life for years and years.”

“But it’s a dog?” Rosario repeated, the question clear. “I don’t think it’s about to die.”

Ehud’s neck muscles twisted as he looked upward. “Just because isn’t logical it doesn’t mean it doesn’t make sense, Rosy.”

Riure’s breath caught in her throat. Exactly! (‘Lil side-not here, I love that Cathy, it’s so true!)

Silence greeted his quiet words. There was some shuffling and shifting, and Riure pulled back from Ehud, hoping her mysterious benefactor hadn’t left. She gripped the bottle he’d left tightly.

Something thumped lightly, and Riure recognized the sound as someone patting Sadiq’s stomach. When the dog whined, Riure’s heart tore. She hoped Rosario – or whoever was petting her dog – was being gentle.

“Rosario,” Riure managed, her voice thick with emotion. Her tears were dry, and she was exhausted. “Someone gave this to me. He said to put it in her mouth. Is he still here?”

Ha, really? Sadiq’s the only pet I’ve had in my story so far, except one planned for far into the future, but I think that rule might apply for me too… 😛 The animals so don’t deserve what the humans get! 😛

Allen blocked a heavy clawed paw. He was getting tired. He had been warned of it by the captain. The longer you are in combat, the weaker you become. Its unavoidable so finish any battle as quick as possible. Reaching out, he pulled on magic and used it to fuel his body. The others had been forced back one by one. They were injured and tired.

Allen and the two dragons were the last ones on the field. The dragons held the advantage. Few as they were, their raw power could beat any of fielded enemies with ease. Even so, they were vulnerable to flanking maneuvers. Allen could cover them for a bit but he was running out of steam fast.

Landing, Allen tried to save a little more energy. In front of him, several smaller monsters were closing. Taking them down, Allen staggered. He was down. For all intents and purposes, he was out of the battle. Slowly sheathing his sword, Allen shot out a thin line of magic to one of the dragons. He was too tired to notice which. Reeling himself up, Allen flopped down on the scale panting.

                                  “Sorry. I can’t fight anymore.”

The dragon turned its head. It looked like the girl. Her name was Rilyn right?

“Hey. ‘Bout what I said earlier Rilyn. I regret saying it. Dragons like you haven’t been heard from were I come from for a very long time. I guess all the stories I heard were of the villains of your race.” Allen paused for a moment. “Hey. If we make it through this, tell me some stories of your great heroes. I’m sure you’ve got some grand ones.”
