Sarah Burns started the topic The Elements of an Eerie Antagonist – what makes a villain frightening? in the forum New Wessex Writing Discussions 6 years, 8 months ago
Okay, folks, I want to talk about VILLAINS.
(Wow, so surprising.)
I was wondering why some villains have the power to terrify us while others are more like a tired and sarcastic uncle in background. I see lots and lots of complex & sympathetic baddies (Kylo Ren, Loki), and tons of deranged psychos (Thanos, Mother Gothel, the White Witch), but…[Read more]

Hey guys!
Three announcements concerning New Wessex.
1. I know sometimes community building, brainstorming, etc can be difficult on a forum. So I’m going to run an experiment. I’m going to create a group chat. You guys vote. It could be Facebook, it could be Hangouts. We’ll see how it goes. ๐
2. The guilds as a whole have decided to stop doing…[Read more]

All those quotes sound vaguely familiar. No. 3 is Warcross though, isn’t it?
Here’s a quote from one of my favourite novels…
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times.

I didst! ๐ Gabrielle Pollack, Rolena Hatfield, Brandon Miller, Josiah DeGraaf, Hope Ann, Grace Livingston, @catwing, @noahlitle, some people I probably didn’t realize were from SE…. It was a great time ๐

I agree with Grace though, we should try to finish brainstorming this thing so we can get it done. So we need to figure out the name and details of our MC, what exactly is the crime, who was either murdered or kidnapped, and what was the motive of who did it? And any details I might have forgotten. ๐

With YWW, signing up took the most time I think, I didn’t find it very time consuming personally. It’s possible some people might, but I didn’t have any trouble with it. You do spend 30 minutes meeting with your mentor, and you get homework which obviously takes additional time, but I highly recommend the program. It is…[Read more]

Btw, @literatureforthelight, this is a great idea to start this thread! I’m afraid I’m too exhausted from Realm Makers to look at everyone’s posts, but I hope your writing is going okay! Mine is pretty good except I recently realized I’m focusing on too much, so I think I’m going to have to change the idea (at least slightly)–again. Which is a…[Read more]

I really needed to hear this. I find myself feeling slightly overwhelmed by all the ideas I get in a day. 😬
Also, I think you meant to tag @literatureforthelight but sure, I can answer you question. Yeah, I think you can have toxic relationships with books…mine certainly haven’t all been healthy. 😛

@noodle-mum Sorry I didn’t answer you question…I promise I wasn’t ignoring you. I just got super busy. 🤦♀️
YES. I completely and entirely agree. Pineapple on pizza is disgusting. 🤢

Thanks! I’m very excited to be in this here guild! ๐Yes, I believe that’s what we have so far. Sorry it’s taken me so long to reply!
And as for the Main Character being an investigator, I’m not sure. I would assume he/she is, just because that puts him in the position to be solving the crime, but if we wanna…[Read more]

Thank you so much for reviewing my story! I’m really glad that it encouraged you, I wrote it as a reminder to myself that God is our hope amid this dark culture. Knowing that you were encouraged by it, encourages me by showing that the story is doing its job. ๐ Despite my trouble with grammar.
I think I fixed the view…[Read more]

Hey Saxon Scribes!
At long last, the prompt war is back. This one should be interesting:
Write a mystery.

Dealing with multiple ideas
Most writers have more story ideas than they know what to do with. If youโre in this boat, you need to know how to cut through the clutter and make the right decisions. Here are a few things Iโve learned that have helped me.
Write everything down
Writing your story ideas down cements them in your brain. Youโll be ab…[Read more]

hehe, thanks! It’s been difficult, keeping on track. Finishing works has never been my ah, strong suite. ๐ In fact, it’s so bad I hadn’t finished anything (short story, novel, prompts) for probably 5 years–up until last week when I had a friend find a short story I was working on and demand an ending. Hey Saxon Scribes,
As you’ve noticed, activity has been pretty low here. Same with the other guilds.
That’s fine if everyone’s busy, but if it’s just because the guilds weren’t attractive enough…
Well, we should do something about that then.
After talking it over with some of the other SE staff. We have an idea. This isn’t a premade…[Read more]
