There were two posts that I got emails about but weren’t there when I looked on the website. There are no posts from last week listed on the Recent Activity page, so this appears to have happened to all posts from last week. I’ve checked on multiple networks and devices, so it seems like it would be like that for everyone.
So basically, if one were to fall on this holey planet, they would be in a mini orbit through the planet and around its core?Well it would be an orbit through the core, not around the core. It would basically be a straight line, they’d be going back and forth on. It’s a similar scenario to an oscillating spring. And that’s assuming the hole goes all the way through.
an asymmetrical planet, would there still be no gravity at the planet’s center? Or would it be in patches all over the planet?I think it would mainly cause the no-gravity location to be not in the geometric center. It might be possible that there’d be multiple no-gravity points, depending on how the mass was arranged. I’m not really familiar with gravitational analysis of weirdly shaped objects.
What if the zero-gravity area was full of water and the external gravity was all that was keeping the water in the no-gravity zone? That should work.
I like the idea of the gravity train! What do you think would be a good amount of time for it to take?I looked more into the travel time, and it turns out the travel time doesn’t depend on distance from the center. It only depends on the density of the planet. For earth, it would take 42.24 minutes. For your Jupiter-size, earth-mass planet, it would take 25.57 hours.

A planet the size of Jupiter, with the mass of earth.
- So it’d basically be a swiss cheese planet? Vaguely similar to Ego from Guardians of the Galaxy 2. I was thinking that it’d have different climates in it’s various layers, varying from a very moist and still environment at the core, to a very dry and windy environment on the surface with the atmosphere very close to the planet so the air’s thinner on the surface and the sky looks black in the daytime.
- but about the gravity: would the gravity’s power alter the closer one got to the core? Would the gravity change directions at the core?
In a symmetrical sphere, the gravity gets weaker the closer you get to the center. At the center the gravity is zero. Gravity will always pull toward the center, so if you were passing through the center, gravity would change directions. (If you want more details look up Newton’s shell theorem). Your planet is not spherically symmetrical because of the holes but I think if the holes were approximately evenly distributed it should be approximately correct.
If you fell through the a hole that went all the way through the center of the planet, you would reach you maximum speed at the center of the planet, then slow back down to zero speed at the other side of the planet and start falling again. This is actually an orbit that passes through the planet’s center. (Orbits are ellipses; this ellipse is so thin that it’s a straight line).
An interesting application of this, which would actually might be feasible on your planet because of all the holes, is the idea of a gravity train. Basically if you connect any two points on the surface of the planet by a low-friction train line that goes through the planet, the train can get to one point to the other solely by gravity power and the time it would take is constant for a particular planet, regardless of which two points on the surface are chosen. Because you have multiple habitable layers, I’ll point out that this also works for any two points that are the same distance from the planet’s center, although the time the train would take would vary with the distance of the stations from the center.
We learned the contractions in school, and usually they make sense anyway (except of ”ain’t”. I still have no idea what does it mean), so they weren’t too hard to learn.
“Ain’t” is only used by more uneducated people. For example, they might say, “That ain’t true,” while the correct way is, “That isn’t true.”
I must say, yes, ain’t means isn’t, but it definitely doesn’t mean you’re uneducated.
At one point, I remember being interested to learn that ain’t stood for am not. I thought it may have become stigmatized because people used it in situations where they didn’t mean “am not.”
Just looking it up now, though, it looks like the history might be a little more complicated. Merriam-Webster dictionary says it originally came from a contraction of are not, but the Wikipedia article on the word says it may have come from a combination of the historical contractions of “am not” (am’nt or an’t), “are not” (an’t), and “have not” (han’t).
Merriam-Webster says that “ain’t” can mean “am not,” “is not,” “are not,” or “has not,” or “have not.”

@anne_the_noob14 If you want any chance to recover your data, <b>do not save anything to the flash drive.</b>
@catwing is right that when you delete a file it only removes a record that the file exists, not the actual data. As a result, there is software that exists that can attempt to recover deleted files. However, if you save something else to the flash drive, the computer could write over the memory where the file was stored. I don’t have any particular software to recommend, but know that they exist and have used them. Also, you said you had to versions of each file. Is the other one up to date? Did you check other computers for the up to date version?
Well, another publishing option would be to create your own blog or website to publish your work on. This would probably be a lot of work. People would have to find your website, so you would have to figure out how to market it. To make money you could still use a Patreon account or you could look into advertising (or both). You could also possibly later publish a print copy of your webcomic and probably at least a few of your readers would buy it because they like print books.
From my perspective as a reader, I think the best way to market a book is to provide a free short story or excerpt of your writing to get me interested. You would still need to find a way to get people to read that (posting the link on this forum might be a good start). I have become interested in buying books from several authors through reading stories that they let me read for subscribing to their mailing lists.
@i-david Well, technically the sun’s light isn’t from fire. It’s from a nuclear fusion reaction.
@scarletimmortalized
This caused me to realize that nuclear reactions are another way of generating heat. However, you would have to think through if the technology necessary to develop nuclear reactors requires fire.It is pretty hard to think about what technology would have developed like if fire did not exist. I guess it depends on how the Ektos is used.
Also @mlbolangerauthor mentioning chemical reactions made be think that since fire is a type of chemical reaction, it would be interesting how having no fire would effect the chemistry of that world.
But you probably don’t need to get into the details of chemistry in your world building.-

Based on a quick count (I may have counted some people twice or missed people because I thought I already counted them), here are the number of personality types who have responded to this thread:
- INTJ – 7
- INFJ – 6
- ENFP – 6
- INTP – 5
- INFP – 5
- ENFJ – 1
- ENTP – 1
- ISFP – 1
Hmm…
I was wondering if some personality types that were prevalent among writers (…or at least prevalent among writers who join online forums and are into personality types…). Maybe this thread will help me figure that out. For example, I’ve noticed a lot of INTJ’s on this site, but that could just be because I notice people who have my personality type and forget everyone else’s personality type.
I haven’t thought much about stereotypes about my personality type.
@lady-iliara I’ve read that Steampunk is a subgenre of Speculative Fiction, specifically Science Fiction. Steampunk involves technology and alternative history which are science fiction concepts.
I’ve always liked writing fantasy because of The Chronicles of Narnia and The Lord of the Rings. I like how I can use my imagination to build my own worlds.
However, recently I have started writing fiction set in the real world. I use world building to connect several story ideas together.
