Gabrielle Pollack replied to the topic Topic #14: What Makes Your Character Emotional? in the forum Annual Theme Discussion 8 years, 2 months ago
@christianna-hellwig I think it will work, but I find it’s easier to draw my character’s values from his backstory. What happened in his past (how he was raised, his culture, and the trauma he has experienced) all shape what he believes. Those values then determine what he gets emotional over. P.S. This can also apply to an abstract value like a character’s love of freedom and patriotism.

@dekreel No need to apologize! Life gets crazy. 🙂 And I totally understand being sad over KP. We had some amazing times over on the forum, and change can be super rough. 🙁
And you can totally join us even if you’re not writing a novel! I promise we don’t bite. 🙂

Different cultures have different standards for emotional expression. For instance, some societies may prize nobility and honor and encourage taming emotions that may undermine those ideals. One might encourage emotional reactions to misfortunes, while another might suppress even justified sorrow or anger because they expect their…[Read more]

@fawxofthecomics Do you outline your novels? Having a clear idea of what your novels look like before you start may help you know if you want to pursue that idea or not. It may also keep you from getting stuck because you know where your story is going. 🙂
Other than that, I’m afraid I don’t know much on the topic. I bet some of our wiser…[Read more]

The forum exists so we can connect and help each other out with our writing questions. On the fourm, you can either start a thread or reply to an existing one.
Threads are individual topics users create (like the one I’ve created here) for others to reply to. People usually start threads because they have a q…[Read more]
