The girl jumped as though a snake had bit her but kept her head hidden in the shadow of her hood. She turned her head away, faintly whispering the words, “Leave me alone.”

The girl was almost to the other side of the ballroom now. “Excuse me.” Megyn said softly, as she swerved around a knot of people and stepped to the wall. Taking just a second to lean her cello against it, she turned and she skirted along it, almost jogging as she sped up.
