The Lady’s breath caught in her throat as her eyes landed on him. “Brendin–”
“He’s dead.” The words were soft.
“What?”
The man lifted his eyes to meet hers for only a moment. His irises were grey, grey and dull with no shred of joy or peace, only pain. Gone were those mirthful grey-blue eyes. “Your son is dead,” the man repeated, his voice taut and hoarse.
“Dead?” she asked, still bewildered.
“Yes.” He turned away, as if looking at the Lady was painful.
Margery’s jade green eyes became misty and her throat tightened. “You’re certain?”
“Beyond a doubt.” After a moment of her silence he added: “I wish it weren’t so, but to say otherwise it would be a lie.”
The Lady Warin swallowed with some difficulty. “I see.”

Heh, I took ASL last year for school! I’m still not very good, but I can get by. (And yes it certainly would!! It’s really helpful when you’re eating and you don’t want to talk with your mouth full. XD) Unfortunate side-effect to learning ASL: you talk with your hands. A LOT. XD
LOL! All I know how to sign is “I love you” “please” and “thank you” (or was it “you’re welcome”? Shoot I always mix them up signing XD) and a couple other words and phrases here and there. I really should learn the ASL alphabet that’ll be a good start (instead of trying to memorize that entire signing book, forgetting the first several chapters’ worth almost immediately and becoming so depressed/also busy I ended up dropping it. Along with Morris Code. And lip reading. I think I’m seeing pattern here XD) But I have nobody to sign with, although that shouldn’t stop me!
Speaking of, funny story:
Lol I’ve only ever taken one “formal” exam and that was the ACT, which I studied for only in the most liberal definition of the word and I was so freaked out by how depressed and anxious and just plan robotic my classmates were I felt like I had stepped into a prison camp and that threw me. Still passed tho but no one dare ever ever read that horrible excuse for a timed essay dehydrated, exhausted me chucked out at the end of the day XD. So it’s awesome you did it that early!
So in Haven (the nation/world Brendin is from) every human generally has a soul, which is formed of several components; personality, memories, spark (the part that gives you life), etc. When someone suffers mental or emotional trauma (like Alessio’s C-PTSD), this also translates as an injury to the soul; vice versa when someone suffers an injury to the soul, it can result in psychological trauma of some form.
Oooh that sounds a lot like Alessio’s situation except…*major spoilers* nevermind XD. The idea with maere’s souls bound so tightly is really really interesting! Like @joelle-stone said I’d love to read your book!!

Ok so everybody’s had a mental breakdown, new character Mayra appears, they decided to break down the walls cos the door disappeared and that didn’t work so the dragon broke a hole in the roof and now everybody’s going there to the next eldritch abomination and we should probably give our characters a break now or something and I need Nithel to go back to his sweet, steady happy(er) self XD
Oh and there’s some weird presence in the dark roof area that’s another room that the characters haven’t fully explored.

There was a ritual to being given the privilege to wear one’s hair like a warrior, and the leather strap was always marked. If honor were to be returned to someone who lost it, they had to return the exact same strap because it symbolized the soul of a warrior.

Mmm…well he probably will be more comfortable with Lupa since she’s a werewolf and that’s fairly commonplace in his world. Let’s see what event could induce Alessio to actually socialize/not-hide-behind-his-only-friend-for-that.

Heheh, yeah, that surprised me too (and fleshed out a point between two character arcs at once). But it couldn’t have gone to a worthier character XD! <3
Mayra looked over to see the fiery boy and the one with the kind eyes conversing. The fiery boy gave his friend what looked like a string, which he used to tie back his hair. Honestly men and their ponytails, Mayra thought. What did they like so much about them? She rolled her eyes slightly.

Actually, Brendin wasn’t going to take Malvat up on his offer. And Brendin really isn’t the type to mutter reassurances to anyone, ever. So I think you’ll have to rewrite your post a bit (sorry).

Basically what has happened is a lot of characters were switched out and around, a few more people left, more people came in, the castle threw a lot of nasty stuff at our poor people, and everyone’s going through a lot of character (as in virtue) building, especially Alessio and Nithel – Cathy and Kim’s characters. 🙂 *catches breath*
(Also, I put Dharin in one of my novelettes – I hope you don’t mind and I hope I portrayed him halfway accurately – you can read it here. Dharin is introduced on pg. 15, if you decide to read it. ;))

Oh phew. I was worried I would get him wrong. XD It’s a lot easier to replicate a character when you don’t have to remember their physical appearance/posture/body language/whatnot. 😉
