@calidris  no wonder Quin has a complex, lol. He’s tiny next to all those giants! Thanks for doing this, it’s really helpful

haha.  Oh dear, yeah. XD Now Qatar has some serious bragging rights. Anytime anybody else lords something over him in this castle he can be like. “Yeah, but I died…”

Okayyy, so SE is being funky.

I shall try to answer succinctly in case that is the problem.

Thank you so much!! AND THE MEME IS JUST SO- 😂

              @calidris

Thank you! He’s not all lines and edges, but he’s not a teddybear — I’m glad it got through like that. (:

Yes, that is Yulenna! The scene is their very first meeting. 😆

Oh wow … yeah, I can definitely see signs of autism in Basil now that I think about it. That is really interesting!

Klein stood. He just couldn’t seem to start or join a conversation. He got along fine with his squad and a few officers. Few others really talked much outside of the usual debrief questions. Maybe it had something to do with how boot camp was?  Before Klein could continue the thought, the ground under his foot cracked loudly. Springing toward safe ground, he realized his error. Instead of jumping, all he did was concentrate his weight on the crack. More than five hundred pounds of armor and man broke through the ground.

Crashing against the rubble, Klein blinked. That wasn’t too… His helmet slammed into his forehead. Shaking the ringing out of his ears, Klein picked up the helmet. Touching his head with his free hand, he felt the burning pain. That would bruise up a bit. Twisting helm on, the HUD lit up. No chances of that happening again. Looking up, Klein saw the hole he had made. Not too large, maybe four feet across and eight feet down to the floor.

“I’m okay. Just landed on my head.”

Not a good joke but… Klein kicked at the dust on the smooth floor. Smooth floor. Not natural. Curious, Klein felt the wall. Also smooth. Carved and polished.

                “Hey, y’all gotta see this.”

Klein saw what it was now. A passageway, high arched almost Gothic in shape. In the distance, a grey light shown. Instinct quickly moved him to his rifle. It wasn’t damaged in the fall thankfully. Now armed, Klein advanced. The others found a way down and followed. Watching his HUD, Klein saw the carbon dioxide levels rise slightly. Nothing dangerous but interesting.

A form on the ground caught his attention next. Raising his hand in warning, Klein kneeled cautiously. He had an idea what it was but flicked on the helmet light for final confirmation. It was a body, a week or so old. A dwarf too, armored and armed. Klein was glad to have his helmet. This one would be pretty bad by now. Brushing maggots aside, Klein took the dwarf’s weapon. A war hammer with a steel rather than wood shaft. Holding it against his back, he let the magnets grip it. The hammer would be a good melee weapon if he needed on. It was more of a hand axe in length but the all metal construction could keep up with his greater strength.

Motioning with his hand, Klein took up point again. The end of the passage was near.

All right folks, here’s the scenario. They are basically in the Lonely Mountain. At the end of the passage in the great hall and of course a sleeping dragon. That catch is, there is a captive there too. Freeing said captive will wake the dragon. So what do they do.

                @everyone.

Ooohhh, that’s brilliant! I love it! I’ve been trying to think of stuff for them to do but got inevitably stuck XD

Cool idea! It’ll be fun to see them face off a dragon! (I’m guessing that most of the characters aren’t going to just leave the captive alone) I have an idea that I think would be fun to add to this situation. What if to each character the captive was someone they hated or are scared of? If you don’t like the idea, that’s fine and you don’t have to go along with it.

Oh man YESS!!! That’s so brilliant! I want to see if Liorah and Aydin will actually rescue one of the villains. I have the PERFECT one in mind, you all will hate her 🥰🥰 (I loathe her as a person and adore her as a character and some of you already know who I mean XD)

                      Aydin

“So, how long have you been in this place? And which people should I try to not upset?” Khalon asked, cautiously.

“I don’t know and probably everyone,” I answered, briefly. “Time isn’t real and Niarok is the only person here who probably wouldn’t kill someone.”

I purposefully didn’t include Liorah in that assessment. Some days I still thought she hated me as much as ever. She didn’t like me, she needed me. And she was willing and able to kill someone else. I’d seen it.

A rending, tearing sound flickered into my awareness. I ignored it with an eye-roll. Another odd hallucination. Until the armored man, Klein, I thought his name was, stumbled backward, then crashed through the floor. I glanced at Khalon, trying to assess whether that had actually happened.

Judging by his shocked expression, it had. My hallucinations were more vague anyway.

I carefully edged toward the hole. How deep was it? Had he gotten hurt? I glanced toward Niarok, on the point of calling him closer.

“I’m okay. Just landed on my head,” he said, sounding surprsingly calm for what had just happened. I tensed, ready to either scramble away or jump down if a bigger threat came from behind. My heartrate was irrationally high and I let out a deep breath.

“Hey, y’all gotta see this.” He didn’t sound alarmed, only interested. If it was a trap he would have come up with a stronger reason.

Liorah strode over and peered down into the darkness. Her expression became wry. I knew how much she hated heights.

“I’ve seen you jump off a running horse onto rocky ground. This is nothing,” I said, teasingly.

“You don’t call it running,” Liorah said, instinctively correcting me. “And it’s different.”

I glanced down into the depths. The problem was that I couldn’t properly assess how deep it was or what the ground was like. I would be able to break my fall but it would hurt if I miscalculated.

Nobody else made a move to go, then a faint light flickered out below. It was just enough that I could assess how far it was. I sighed, checked my weapons, and jumped off the edge.

I had done this hundreds of times. By this time it was instinct, but it still knocked the breath out of me. I was on my feet again within seconds regardless. The hall was dark, and the only light came from above and Klein’s suit. I shot him a wary look, but he seemed to have barely noticed me.

The walls and floors were smooth and the hallway was long, but the smell of rotting flesh filled the cavern. I didn’t even give it a second thought. That often happened when I got nervous.

“Come on, Liorah, it isn’t that high,” I said, tiredly.

                      “I’d rather die.”

“You just might. If you don’t come down here the castle will make you.”

                      “Let it try.”

                      She was insufferable.

                      ______________

If the castle doesn’t actually make Liorah come down I’ll have to convince her somehow XD

I also find it both sad and funny that Aydin instantly dismisses just about everything as a hallucination until proven otherwise XD

Without darkness, there is no light. If there was no nighttime, would the stars be as bright?

                        KHALON

“I don’t know and probably everyone. Time isn’t real here, and Niarok is probably the only person who won’t kill you,” Aydin answered shortly.

I was about to ask about the entire time isn’t real thing when cracking sound echoed around the cave. The armored man leapt back. His full weight came crashing down causing the floor under him to cave in. I winced.

“I’m okay. Just landed on my head,” the man called back up to all of us who were standing on what had now become a cliff. “Hey, y’all have gotta see this.”

What could possibly be down there except for more rock? I edged towards the drop off. I gasped. There below me was a huge arch with an orange haze emitting from it. “How did that get there?” This cave seemed to be full of surprises.

Out of the corner of my eye I saw Aydin  jump down. I instinctively took a step back. I had no desire to leap down into that hole.

Underneath my feet, I felt the rock begin to split. I scan the floor. The cracks were steadily spreading across the cave. Clearly, all of us were going to end up in the hole either by falling or by jumping. I quickly weighed both options. Jumping seemed the better choice.

I returned once more to the very edge. I breathed deeply then walked off the edge.

I landed hard on my legs, but I quickly somersaulted. My legs still throbbed slightly, but they weren’t as bad as before. I staggered to my feet. This was not going to end well.

                          @everyone

Hiiii! I know I know, I have been missing for some time now please don’t be mad. I spent the last few week settling into university as I am now studying abroad in England! Do forgive me for my tardiness XD

In the meantime I will now introduce a new character into the story so Lorcan will finally meet someone who knows his name heehee. His name is Daire, he is a dramatic daredevil character whose always cracking a joke, but not in an annoying way. He has ginger hair tied back in a short ponytail, dark blue eyes. He’s relatively tall and fit, he’s not attractive in the conventional way but he has the sort of laugh and smile that is genuinely contagious so people generally like him.

                          Daire

Daire was more than happy to just continue the rest of his day doing nothing else than snacking on those freshly made pancakes. Who cared if he didn’t turn up for training? His mother would kill him of course – but he would worry about that later. After all she never kept her promises of spanking him with that large wooden spoon hanging above the cooker.

Anyways just in case – he would keep the bow and arrows in his bag. As well as a his good knife for carving his face into random trees. Yeah actually – maybe he should stop doing that. The dwarves were sensitive about people carving designs into their trees without their permission. They were especially outraged at his utter masterpieces. It wasn’t his fault that they had no appreciation for art!

He mooched along happily, his bare feet treading on soft mossy forest floor. Getting farther and farther away from civilisation with nothing but a bag full of pancakes was his ideal afternoon. What a blissful way to-

                          Whoosh

The floor disappeared beneath his feet and suddenly he was freefalling. Daire screamed. He hugged his pancakes desperately to his chest as he tumbled through darkness, wind whistling in his ears.

“Darn it!” He shrieked. “Why now? Why meee?! I – just – wanna – enjoy my pan-

Light burst in his eyelids and walls of rock swam in his vision. Then he slammed into what felt like a body.

“Agh! Ow!” Daire groaned. “That hurt now!”

He wasn’t actually hurt. Not badly, maybe just bruised here and there. There was a throbbing in his left leg, but he ignored it as he suddenly realised that he was no longer holding that batch of warm food. His pancakes! Where were they?

He shoved himself off the unfortunate person and began to crawl about desperately. He spotted his bag straight away. “Okay,” he muttered as he checked the contents. “Right me bag is here.”

But the pancakes he had been holding were no longer to be seen.

“No! No no no, me flipping pancakes, where are they?” He scrabbled around looking in the muck and dampness of the cavern floor for his food. This whole thing was enough to break his heart!

It was then that he realised that he was being watched by a group of people.

He smiled at them toothily, flicking a strand of hair out of his eyes. “How ya now? Name’s Daire. Have ye lovely strangers seen my pancakes by any chance? They’re about this size.” He made a large circular shape with his hands. “Please do tell me if you’ve seen them. They’ll get cold, and I prefer them when they’re still roasting, you know what I’m saying?”

Aw I’m delighted to hear that, thanks Rose! I look forward to his future interactions with her – it could go anywhere hehe. And yeah he is the total opposite! I intend for them to have some of those buddy banters where Lorcan acts like he doesn’t like him but secretly he thinks he’s hilarious.

I am also not going to be too straightforward about who Daire is and what his role is in the story because its all SPOILERS so I am just going to use this castle to flesh out his personality.

Quick question for @everyone: in your personal opinion can a character have more than one motive, goal, desire and misbelief? That’s kinda where I’m at with my character Mayra, I’m literally trying not to let my brain explode because of all the things going on inside her head XD

Yeah I guess a character could have multiple motives. I mean us humans do so the people we create can too.

Klein slowly rounded the exit of the tunnel. The room beyond opened up exponentially. A stairwell, seemingly carved out of the wall led to the floor. Columns that made sequoia trees small rose up to a ceiling far above. Whoever had made this place had meant it for awe. And it did instill awe though not in the designer’s plan. Near the foot of the stairs, one of the great columns was shattered on the ground. Others showed deep gouges and burn stains. Crawling up the ruined pillar, Klein slowly looked over.

A great grey dragon was sleeping on the floor. Curled up, it was about the size of hardened aircraft shelter. What it would be like uncurled sent shivers down Klein’s spine. It would rival a jumbo jet, might even match a space fleet corvette. Preparing to slip down the ruins, Klein stopped. Something caught his attention. A form close to the dragon stood out. It wasn’t rubble. Lowering his monocle scope, Klein zoomed in. It looked like a person but their back was to him. It might be alive or it could be another corpse.

                                “Agh! Ow! That hurt now!”

Klein snapped around. A boy was wallowing on the ground.

“Okay, Right me bag is here. No! No no no, me flipping pancakes, where are they?”

Klein scampered down from his ledge. That was too loud. Way too loud.

“How ya now? Name’s Daire. Have ye lovely strangers seen my pancakes by any chance? Klein quickly put his hand over the boy’s mouth, shushing at him.

“Keep it down or finding pancakes will be the least of your worries.”

I’m loving it thanks for asking! Living with strangers was hard at first but I’m getting used to it   I am also making some new friends plus I joined the gym so I’m busy busy! Aand I also get time to work on my WIP.

Wow, that sounds hectic! I can imagine it’s a big adjustment, but I’m glad you’re enjoying it! What are you studying?

Did you have any issues with the three big storms? I’m pretty sure they were over England as well. We certainly felt all of them, but praise God we barely have damages. It was definitely stressful though.

LOL, those are the best dynamics!

I am also not going to be too straightforward about who Daire is and what his role is in the story because its all SPOILERS so I am just going to use this castle to flesh out his personality.

LOL, that’s a mood XD I’ve been deliberately obscuring a lot of stuff with Aydin and Liorah.

in your personal opinion can a character have more than one motive, goal, desire and misbelief? That’s kinda where I’m at with my character Mayra, I’m literally trying not to let my brain explode because of all the things going on inside her head XD

Yes, absolutely! Aydin has absolutely dozens of each! Just off the top of my head his misbeliefs include “I’m not wanted” “I don’t deserve happiness” “I’m a burden” “I need to be independant or others will hurt me” “I won’t amount to anything” and so on and so forth. (I can keep going, trust me. Don’t worry he’s getting help in-story, it’s working out.)

But you’ll see that almost all of those boil down to one fundamental lie: “I am a terrible person and deserve every bad thing that happened to me and nothing else.” All the other lies often turn out to be different “flavors” of the same thing.

Another example, Liorah’s current lie (in book 3) is “I have to be successful by surpassing Gavril’s example, otherwise I’m useless and my future will slip away from me and I’ll be unhappy for the rest of my life.”

However in the same vein she’s showing strong signs of a sub-lie. “I have to sacrifice everything or I’m worthless.” However, if you were to ask her “Why do you have to?” She’d probably answer “Because Gavril did” and it boils down to the same thing.

It might be that characters have a set of interconnected lies, and especially in a series sometimes you just have to bookmark them and move on.

For example, Liorah was showing signs of this “I have to live up to Gavril” nonsense all the way back in book 1, but she had a block in her way “Why should I?”. It was still there, it was just hidden. As circumstances changed it popped up again worse than ever.

I hope that rant was at least somewhat useful!

                                  @everyone

I really want to get back in the castle, but life has just been happening and has not stopped happening. When there is an interlude, I’ll try to make a grandiose return 🙂

Without darkness, there is no light. If there was no nighttime, would the stars be as bright?
