@storyseeker, you could ask for people to beta-read/alpha-read/critique in the Critique space here. I personally have a street team who I ask to beta-read for me.

Note: The guildmasters decided on the topic of writing life. So each week, you will get a discussion on something to do with Writing Life. Today’s topic is written by Daeus Lamb.
We know that critique is vital for our growth as writers, yet we rarely stop to think how to optimize the critique we get.
Critique is a limited resource, so I think it…[Read more]

We have another writing prompt war! This time I get to help us work on it, so hopefully we can get some work done with it.
The writing prompt this time is: write a believable conversion scene.
Deadline: March 24th
So let’s start brainstorming and get something written!

Instead of doing a new post every week, I’m going to do one each month. You can subscribe to the post and I’ll only tag you in the first post each month.
So what goals do you have for this week? My goal is to get at least 6,000 words written in my rewrite of my WWI novel.

Okay, thanks! That helps so much! (When you said sappy, I instantly thought like romantic, but really the word sappy has more meanings than that, so my bad! 😉)
(Also, I don’t know why I’m trying to help you because I’m kind of an emotional drama queen and I’m a sucker for highly emotional scenes, but hey, I’ll see what I can do.…[Read more]

K.M. Small replied to the topic When is the Best Time to Introduce the Mentor? in the forum Plotting 7 years, 1 month ago
I’m assuming you’re referring to the archetype Mentor character? I’m not sure of any hard and fast rules, but I’d think within the first act/quarter of the story would be best, or at least before the midpoint. If he were introduced in the first act, he would slowly begin to reveal the protagonist’s inner problems and help propel him…[Read more]

Hey, so just for clarification, are we talking about romantic relationships? (That’s what I thought you are talking about…)
So, do you mean emotions like sadness and anger or what?
I’d love to help you out, but I don’t want to go blundering ahead making statements and throwing out ideas when we arn’t on the same page.😉

Great question! I am dealing with a lot of the same thing in my current WIP… a lot of unusual relationships, to say the least. 😀
A couple things I have found extremely helpful:
1) Make sure your characters have a lot of individuality, personality of their own. When they have a distinct set of reactions, thoughts, emotions, etc,…[Read more]

I, David replied to the topic Sappy Scenes in the forum General Writing Discussions 7 years, 1 month ago
I’m afraid this is not a “real quick” thing, my good @storyseeker. “Sappy” is just another word for scenes of goofy emotions. They can be romantic, humorous, both, or–the worst side of it–done wrong.
Though I haven’t settled too deep into the waters of well-blended relationships and romantics, I would give the quick rule to make sure your…[Read more]

@storyseeker, to start a topic, go to the section of the forum you want to post in, scroll to the bottom and there’s a couple of blank spaces underneath a place that says “Create New Topic in ‘(section you chose)'” Then you can create the title of the topic you want and write in there. Let me know if you still need help.

And now we get to the best and hardest part of the story. It’s where everything finalizes which means we have to say goodbye to our characters, but it’s also the best part because our characters finally get it and learn from all the problems you’ve put them through.

The key to a good climax is a satisfying ending, but also something…[Read more]
