*gasps* OUR GUILDMASTER HAS DESERTED US.
Okay guys. We need to get organized.
@literatureforthelight an unreliable narrator is when the narrator believes something untrue about the circumstances in the story and tells it from a skewed perspective, and this is obvious to the reader. For instance, if we had the story of a lazy, neglectful, abusive…[Read more]

@literatureforthelight That’s a GREAT idea! I’m not sure if that’s exactly what mine is, but it’s similar.
(I am so embarrassed about this 😆) I wrote it kind of as a…idk, stream-of-consciousness thingy? That’s not the right word. Anyway, it’s not a strict outline, but it’s not an actual rough draft.

@kate The problem with both of these to me is that they might take too long to describe—they would be perfect as part of a longer story, but I’m not sure we can milk the emotional depth in a short piece. But maybe that’s just me. (Remember, I have literally no experience in character death!) 😝
One thing that’s particularly heartbreaking to me i…[Read more]

@Daeus-lamb *nods* Are we talking about spiritual/emotional sacrifices, or actual physical ones? For instance we could go for scifi, and the character actually literally gives limbs and/or organs (in battle, or maybe to replace the limbs/organs of people he/she loves, or possibly both), replacing them with bionic limbs until he literally doesn’t…[Read more]

@Daeus-lamb @m_corinnemusic I like the idea a lot. How would we show that in a word-limited scene without jumping around all over his/her past life showing the times he’s given of himself that have led up to this moment?
I’m totally cool with the idea of a female. I just generally think in masculine terms when it comes to characters. 😛

Daeus Lamb replied to the topic Tragedy, ahoy! in the forum Announcements 7 years, 11 months ago
@m_corinnemusic You gave me an idea with that thought there. What if the positive impact the character is producing on other is what kills him? He slowly gives of himself piece by piece until he’s all gone. (It could definitely be a female, of course.)

Lady Iliara replied to the topic Tragedy, ahoy! in the forum Announcements 7 years, 11 months ago
I noticed that I was attached not only to the character, but to the character’s impact on others.
@m_corinnemusic Yes! I think that’s a key point right there.
I’m not sure about telling it from an inanimate/animal point of view. I feel like either first person or limited third would be cool. If it’s told from first-person, I’d want to cut out m…[Read more]

@kate Okay, I see. Thank you! 😀
I have a suggestion:Â @m_corinnemusic said that we need to get the reader attached to the character as quickly as possible, and that the character should impact others. I totally agree. What if the father (if we use him as our dying character) gives his life for a rebellious son? That scene could be packed full of…[Read more]

Daeus Lamb started the topic Internal monologue in the forum Annual Theme Discussion 7 years, 11 months ago
Well, I was going to cover r-m-archer and Ethryndal’s question today, but I think I should take a week more to think about it. In the meantime, we’re going to cover Kate’s question: how does one write powerful, non-tellish internal monologue?
This is actually one of my favorite topics, so you might get a long lesson.
When you really master…[Read more]

Hey Saxon Scribes!
I hope your swords, er, pencils, are sharp because the next guild war is here!
This time we have two weeks so it won’t be so rushed and helter-skelter. 😉 I think we’ll do great.
The prompt? You’ll love it. We need to write the most emotive death scene we…[Read more]

It’s late, but it’s still Monday. We’re back to talking about character development.
What I want to do here is open up the floor for you to voice the struggles that you’ve been going through with character development. We’ll either gather round and help you with them here in this thread or I’ll create a future thread…[Read more]

Daeus Lamb started the topic Longer chapters in the forum Annual Theme Discussion 8 years ago
Hey Saxon Scribes,
Today’s Monday, so we’re back to out yearly theme discussion of character development. I wanted to share something I’ve picked up recently that has been hugely impactful in my writing.
Longer chapters.
I used to write chapters that were about 2,000-2,500 words long on average. 800 was my lowest. 4,000 something was my…[Read more]

Daeus Lamb started the topic Bondage in the forum Annual Theme Discussion 8 years ago
This being Monday, it’s time for our annual theme discussion on character development.
I thought I’d touch on one of the best character development tools I’ve discovered: bondage.
Every character has faults, right? Their faults build our sympathy. Bondage goes farther. Bondage is something your character can’t get out of, can’t escape from, is…[Read more]

Daeus Lamb started the topic We're giving word wars a try in the forum Announcements 8 years ago
Hi Saxon Scribes,
While we took a break from it last week, the guild wars are starting up again. This time, instead of competing to see who can write the best prompt, we’re competing to see which guild can be the most productive during the week.
Basically, anyone in our guild who writes over 1,000 words this week can submit their word count at…[Read more]

ENU replied to the topic Any other poets out there??? *eagerly searches the horizon* in the forum Poetry Discussions 8 years ago
I love writing poetry too, particularly in Chinese. If possible, I try to have some sort of pattern in the poem. For example, I wrote a poem with 9 stanzas, each with 9 lines, but didn’t have a consistent meter otherwise. Another one had a line of 4 syllables, then 7, then 5, and then it repeated. It’s fun to play around with different styles.

Hey Saxon Scribes,
I barely made this post in time before Monday ended. *blushes*
Along the lines of our annual discussion of character development, I thought it would be worthwhile to camp out on the assassin stereotype for a week and take a deep look at him.
This character type has a definite aura built around them. There are a few different…[Read more]

Great work, @mcnoggin — especially with your colors and metaphors.
I’ll get to making some edits to this tomorrow (hopefully others can add their improvements today), but I just wanted to go ahead and share a couple of my initial thoughts.
