I noticed that I was attached not only to the character, but to the character’s impact on others.
@m_corinnemusic Yes! I think that’s a key point right there.
I’m not sure about telling it from an inanimate/animal point of view. I feel like either first person or limited third would be cool. If it’s told from first-person, I’d want to cut out most of the “I” sentences—like “I wondered if they would remember me” or “I thought of how thus-and-such…” and use more powerful language. I think, @daeus-lamb, your tips on internal monologue would be helpful here.
I also say limited third just because it gives the reader some distance and maybe gives a bit of room to observe more of the surroundings and perspective around the character.
@gabbyj I like your idea about the rebellious son. What if it’s heartbreaking because the father is dying for his son, and he knows that his son may not know/may not care/may not change because of it, but he does anyway?
