@noahlitle Looks good! I think we have much of the structure down, and I definitely think we should keep those elements of regret in there, and intensify them. They contributed a lot to the feeling.
- The definition of the prompt is a dream sequence, so we’ll want to either have him wake up or strongly hint about it being a dream. I think we can…

@noahlitle Maybe you could pitch a definite storyline to us here for thoughts before you begin writing? Because every post so far has been filled with brainstorming and what-ifs.

Oooh, I love the concert pianist idea! And I vote for it being his wife.
@corissa Your idea just there… it just melted my heart, about how he learned piano just for his wife, only for it to spiral into regret… I want to build off that to suggest that the guilt makes him absolutely lose his focus, so he couldn’t play it properly before she…[Read more]

To throw a combination of ideas out there, what if we had a character who has a major event coming up, and he’s scared he’s going to fail. He dreams about doing it (you know, how we all dream about upcoming things we’re stressed about) but in the dream, his wife or someone else who he misses joins him and helps him succeed. He then complains to…[Read more]

I think that the important thing is that we can raise a problem in the dream to have it solved in real life. So… we’re going to need a character, something they’ve been struggling with, and somehow the dream leads towards solving the problem.
The thing about most dream sequences is that they are involved in the more complex scheme of a whole…[Read more]

@daeus-lamb I’m not familiar with dream sequences, so I might need some education on what we’re going to be up to. I read the article and I’m guessing the definition of dream sequences is that they are a dream that begins a story? So not necessarily a series of dreams, but a dream that transitions to the actual story.
My first question to all of…[Read more]

@ethryndal I enjoyed Sley’s POV! The tavern scene was engaging and showed the strength of the world you’ve built.
One thing that occurred to me was that the transition from Sley’s scolding his men to helping out the beggar child (at the beginning of the chapter) seemed a little odd, but I can see how you want to show how he’s not that bad. It…[Read more]

@ethryndal I think that for the character arc, you can show subconscious change and tentative steps in the right direction, even Liriel won’t want to admit that she’s doing it. Or maybe she can reject her worldview in her actions, while still insisting to herself that she hasn’t changed. (I’ve never written a novel-length character arc, so that’s…[Read more]

Grace replied to the topic Theme: do we choose it or does our story decide it? in the forum New Wessex Writing Discussions 7 years, 4 months ago
@eden-anderson I think that the author you’re quoting is right, but that you’re also right in choosing a theme for your story. Let me explain:
DeMarinis is right when he says that the idea of having a theme can sort of cram your story into a place where it’s not supposed to be. If you force yourself to have a certain theme that is not what your…[Read more]

@daeus-lamb For the world war, do school assignments count (at the moment, I am writing a historical fiction diary entry assignment for English)? Or a silly story (I spent far too much time this week working on) that was a birthday present for a friend?

Grace replied to the topic Favorite Characters??? in the forum New Wessex Writing Discussions 7 years, 4 months ago
@samuel One of my favorite characters that I can think of (at the moment) is Inej Ghafa from Six of Crows. She has an uncanny ability to move silently and is skilled with weapons (which is always cool), and despite the fact that she lives in a really dark environment, she has hope and faith that life will be better. She once thinks to herself…[Read more]

Sorry I haven’t been on here! Life’s been busy, but I have been writing (sometimes), which is good 🙂
Since I’m handwriting, I think I’d prefer not to participate in the weekly word war and save some laborious counting and estimates until the end of the month 🙂
Cheers for all of you, though 😀 😀 😀

@chalice Do you mean The Royal Ranger? The twelfth book in the series?
I mean, it has some sad parts to it, but otherwise it’s pretty good. If you want to hear about not just Will but also how Horace/Cassandra/Gilan turn out, I would say you should read it.
Personally, though, I think I love every book for all its different jokes, to be honest xD

*mind goes blank*
I recommend this site to everybody and will do so again: http://www.fantasynamegenerators.com/city-names.php
You can also go to Place Names >> City and Town Names >> Choose from maybe 20 different categories. Each of them is pretty specific in their types, but I figure it’s better than what my brain would come up…

I catch a flicker of movement as Noah slips into the hallway. Wiping cookie crumbs off my fingers, I follow just past the doorway. “Going to the kitchen, too?”
“No, I’m trying to find the library.” It’s a quick reply and before I know it, he’s disappeared around a bend.
I duck back into the room and catch the eyes of a few people who have yet to…[Read more]

@eden-anderson This is great!
I probably won’t be sharing my word count very often, since I handwrite and I don’t want to be coming up with a wordcount y if y = x (328) (0.95) for x number of pages I write…
(No, I am not a math geek, but when you interact with a subject consistently, it begins to show.)
Anyhow, I did write roughly two pages…[Read more]
