To throw a combination of ideas out there, what if we had a character who has a major event coming up, and he’s scared he’s going to fail. He dreams about doing it (you know, how we all dream about upcoming things we’re stressed about) but in the dream, his wife or someone else who he misses joins him and helps him succeed. He then complains to her that she won’t be there tomorrow to help him, but then she says… I don’t know what she says, but when he wakes up he still feels her presence keenly, and he can face the formerly stressful event with courage, because of her. Does that make sense?

It’s sort of a combination of past and future.
