@ethryndal I think that for the character arc, you can show subconscious change and tentative steps in the right direction, even Liriel won’t want to admit that she’s doing it. Or maybe she can reject her worldview in her actions, while still insisting to herself that she hasn’t changed. (I’ve never written a novel-length character arc, so that’s all I can come up with.)

If you’re worried about readers being annoyed, I think that measuring reader’s annoyance is a pretty subjective standard. If you keep the plot interesting, the dialogue engaging, and if Liriel is put into a variety of situations that keep her from making the exact same mistakes twice in a row, I would keep reading even if she didn’t change.
