@katy-walker I’m halfway through The Dragon Prince. So far, the plot seems solid. I’ve noticed clear, defined plot beats– Bethia’s arrival, Robert’s arrival, Altaio deciding to go to the pool and make an attempt to un-curse himself. However, something huge is missing: Altaio’s emotions. This character could be fascinating. He’s in a dark place: a…[Read more]

@katy-walker I’m interested. I write mostly fantasy, so I can’t provide the different genre perspective you want, I’ll give feedback on the overall plot and, if I like it, I’ll go through it again with some suggestions for improving the narrative.

I read it! FINALLY. I’m sorry it took me so long.
Great job. It’s a very interesting story, and unique from most foster stories. I like how she’s Christian. I think that’s super unique and a neat perspective.
My family has been fostering for years, so I know quite a bit about some of this. However, my knowledge is completely…[Read more]

Thanks again for everything, I have almost everything I need to get back to wrestling with my story. *sighs* one more thing.
With the idea of Jane having once been adopted, what are some reasons it would fall through. I mean, I can think of some reasons like, everyone dies. But that’s drastic, cliche, and obvious. So, any ideas?

Okay, I will try to work with that number. It actually fits perfectly with what was going on in my head so that’s great.
As for why she hasn’t been adopted, I don’t know. Is there anything I could add to her character that would explain that without changing her drastically? Let me word that better. Is there a reason for a kid to go…[Read more]

Hi, Katy. Okay, in reply to each of your points:

- Yes, it’s crazy I know. I wanted it to be an almost unbelievable number. If you think it’s absolutely impossible, what number would you suggest? I want it to be larger than normal, but still within the realms of possibility.

He’d definitely still be able to walk and use his other arm. It just couldn’t be anything too strenuous and probably couldn’t (or shouldn’t anyway) run.
I’m slightly unsure of whether you’re being serious or not 😛

My brother broke his collar bone, so did my sister. It’s very painful, but it’s not too bad as long as you take car of it. My brother was sent home with a sling and some pain meds from the ER, and that’s all. He couldn’t do anything strenuous for a long time with it, but it wasn’t life threatening. I’m no expert on it however, I’d…[Read more]

I have no personal experience with broken collarbone but I am a first aid officer so I am somewhat knowledgeable about it.
Essentially the only thing that can be done for a collarbone is to put the arm in a sling (here we use St John sling for first aid and later on a specialised sling can be used, but your world doesn’t sound like…[Read more]

I’ve used the Mayo Clinic as a resource before. That might help. However, I haven’t experienced this myself so I cannot help you from personal experience.

@katy-walker I think that backstory is definitely important in relation unto the story being a part of a history. That’s generally the way I think about my stories as well. It’s a piece of the chimings of time. Plus, if you put work into it and build up the history – especially with fantasy – you can reference certain places as if they are known…[Read more]

Generally, I think stories should begin close to the “moment of change” so there is some time showing the “ordinary world” before your main character goes into the adventure of the plot. Backstory can be sprinkled in bits and pieces throughout the story. There’s nothing set in stone, of course, but rule of thumb for me is that if…[Read more]
