Brian Stansell started the topic Examples of How You Use Subtext in the forum Contemporary Fiction Writers 9 months, 2 weeks ago
I love the idea of things hidden below the surface. Of mysterious buried treasures, and ways to implant certain words or innuendos that have either a dual meaning or are indicative of an even larger mystery lurking beneath the surface action of the story.
I was interested in how each of you uses the concept of subtext in your personal writing,…[Read more]

Hey there! I’m sooo sorry I missed your question! Normally, I get an update from my email when someone replies; so either I forgot to turn on that feature, or the reply became lost somewhere where I can’t find it. Either way, I haven’t visited S.E until more recently. And in my S.E updates, it mentioned your reply *slams palm ont…[Read more]

Yes, it would be fun to post updates of my wip! I will be sure to tag you if I do. I’ve been really busy lately, but I’m hoping after Christmas I will be able to get some writing done.
Greek is a lot of memorization, that’s for sure XD. I’m hoping I can survive this next semester.
That’s neat that your dad teaches church…[Read more]

Haha well then of course I must add it to my to-read list if I haven’t lived without it. XD
It sounds really fun! I’ll see if my online library has it. (My town doesn’t have a brick-and-mortar library unfortunately.)

Haha, I suppose that’s the way it goes with most authors and their stories. Nothing is what it was when it was first started.
Hmm maybe so! I would be interested in reading the alternate, but no guarantee as to when I will be able to. I told Ally Renee I would like to read her draft, and I have two friends banging books over my head…[Read more]

I liked it!
I did not see the whole evil government agency thing coming at ALL. I was expecting something more like Sadie and Robert’s family would adopt Travis and it would turn into a finding a home and meaning even when you’ve lost everything of type story.
So that whole part of the book definitely caught me off guard.…[Read more]

Hey nice to meet you! No, I haven’t published a book yet. Though I am very interested in self-publishing.
Yikes, I hope the problem will work itself out. I’m in the middle of taking a look at your first chapter, and I love the hook. It’s strong and compelling.
I love reading MG too! I grew up with a lot of MG/Children’s book…[Read more]

Hi, I’m Lily and I love writing MG too! That is so wonderful that your favorite author got to read a part of your work. I’m so sorry he passed away.
I know this reply came a bit late, but I’m definitely curious about your book (and checking it out right after this; thanks for the link). I wish you all the best as you write for ch…[Read more]

Fantasy. I don’t branch out too much, though I have written a little in mysteries.
What genre do you like to write in?
Thanks for the welcome!

Will do! Unfortunately, we just started a new one, so it might be while, but I’ll convince them afterwords.
And eh, that’s fine. My philosophy is that books are essential to life, so you get them like you do fruits and veggies. If I have to buy my fruits and veggies sometimes instead of picking them from the local community garden…[Read more]

I looked at your book. It sounds really cool.😄
I’m working on one book right now…I might be halfway done with the first draft, but I’m not sure.😆 Pantser.😉 I probably have about 20 other books in my head, and 1 or 2 that I’ve started and never finished. It’s weird how writing has forced me to start thinking in years, (like an…[Read more]

Actually, @hobbitchild, it is ok to provide a free book in exchange for a review. This is such standard practice that Amazon allows it. However, the reviewer should indicate that he received a free copy for review purposes as opposed to buying one.
If you’re looking for potential reviewers, try BookSirens or IndieReviews. But as you may already…[Read more]

@hobbitchild, the link below is a list of websites that promote books (either free or reduced price) for free. Since they are free services, there’s no guarantee that your book will be chosen for promotion, but it can’t hurt to throw it out there. https://freebookpromotions.com/free-promotion-sites/

@hobbitchild I want to warn you that what you’re describing sounds like one of the most classic definitions of spam—you’re promoting your work in communities where you aren’t already ingrained. That goes double for commenting on blog posts asking people to download. In fact, most spam filters exist specifically to remove that kind of c…[Read more]

Arindown replied to the topic What Age Are Your Main Characters? (Plus Free Book Giveaway!) in the forum Contemporary Fiction Writers 1 year, 9 months ago
Ever since I was little, my characters have always been a few years older than me, or late teens. Right now (I think I’m improving😄) my main character is in his 60’s…but he’s a wizard, so he seems younger. In my other books, my MC’s are 17, and 9.
I’ll try to check out your book.

Hey, @hobbitchild, I just picked up my copy of your book! Looking forward to reading it. Please do keep us posted on how things go. I’m pretty new at this game myself (having published my first book only a few months ago) but I’d love to help you out or share ideas if there’s any way I can.
