Raspberries?
How life is, that the most unheroic detail can somehow make the distances between us seem smaller, and the room less cold. I stand with Kate, and everyone follows suit. If talking has died down, maybe everyone’s spirits will be revived by a little bit of a stretch and walk.
The grating of many wooden chairs follows, and with a start…[Read more]

Great points, everyone. @germaine-han yep, relationships and plot should be entirely tied up in each other. Totally agree.
@Eden-anderson uggghhh. *rubs face* Dora and David. Why did you have to remind me. David Copperfield is probably my least favorite Dickens ever. The point of the story was to showcase David’s silly heart, but I’ve gotta think…[Read more]

Hey Saxon Scribes. I think I missed last week somehow, but thankfully I remembered just in time today.
Let’s talk about relational development. Just like the meaning we bring to the world is often found in our relationships, usually the best character development is actually relational development between one character and another.
Today, it t…[Read more]

The elusive members of the Saxon Scribes continue to meet in a great hall with whistling wind and flickering firelight, finding ways to redeem literature in the name of our Lord Jesus. They plan to stop the evil forces of Melkor by remembering that even if they speak in the tongues of angels, without love they are nothing.

Thanks, @germaine-han. Just keep an eye out here and bug me if I don’t post my word count for the week. And bug me a lot if I don’t post the story at the end of November. 🙂

Okay, people…I’m new at this so forgive me for being confused and possibly wasting your time. 😛
What does it mean by revising original scenes? I’m working on a short story right now and last night I wrote a bunch, but didn’t finish the complete scene. When I went back and looked at it this morning, I saw a bunch of things I should have added to…[Read more]

Hey guys.
So, I’m working on rewriting and expanding a short story I wrote, and I need some accountability. I’m a little afraid I’ll get into it, decide it’s not really worth writing and give up on it.
I mean, I’ve already started, and decided it wasn’t edifying, so I stopped. Then realized that I needed to work on something so I’m working on…[Read more]

Hey guys,
I forgot there was a word war this week! I’m going to need to set myself some automated reminders.
Anyway, we’re going to do the best we can. The guilds have decided to war starting today and ending Tuesday night.
This works like it always does. We write as much as we can and try to outdo everyone else!
Here’s what can count toward…[Read more]

Hey Saxon Scribes, we have a homepage now!
Josiah fixed it up all nice for us. This isn’t officially launched, but I thought I’d give you a sneak peek at it so you can share any suggestions for how to make it better.
The purpose of this page is be awesome, store important/fun information, and let curious…[Read more]

Hey guys,
I thought with our discussion of handling tricky subjects in the article realm it might be neat to discuss writing criminal types.
Here are a few questions to get us started:
- How do we write highly engaging criminals without endorsing their criminal activity?
- Can one write a criminal character just for the purposes of the plot…

@germaine-han Yes, so in the first version I started off with a philosophical statement. There’s nothing wrong with that, but this particular philosophical statement had nothing to do with how Mortristan viewed his situation. It showed he was asking questions, but what questions? That’s what really matters. That’s the type of place his…[Read more]

Hey Guys,
I’m going to do a slightly more in-depth post about disposition for this week’s theme discussion topic. If you missed it, here’s my first post on disposition:Â https://storyembers.org/forums/topic/disposition/
This being a relatively new idea for me, I’m still learning about it and I did a lot of that learning over the past week. The…[Read more]

Well guys, we have the results for the word war.
If I counted right, our total was 20,961 — an awesome word count!
However, Rillumen nocked it out of the park with 39,179 words. :0
Collectively, all the guilds wrote about 200,000 words in one week! *faints*
While we didn’t win, keep in mind we really weren’t too far off. Some of us were…[Read more]

Let’s talk about the most undervalued character type in all of literature.
Parents.
The obvious fact is that most parents in novels die or are already dead (at least it seems like it). The less obvious fact is that even when they’re around, they’re not very important as parents.
What may be even less obvious is that even when they do matter as…[Read more]

The word war is now over and we hope to announce the winner tomorrow. (If you haven’t given me your word count yet, please go post that in the related thread.)
Right on the coattails of that guild war we have another battle. War is life! *raises…[Read more]

I wrote nothing. lol. But I have a fleshed-out character where before there was only a skeleton. He’s much more handsome this way . . ..

Okay, I think I was making disposition larger than it should be. You said that disposition is, in itself, a kind of worldview (short-term, though). So, in the house illustration (this is just how my brain works), the disposition might be the part of the foundation beneath the emotion and mood of the character, while the worldview…[Read more]
