Let’s talk about the most undervalued character type in all of literature.
Parents.
The obvious fact is that most parents in novels die or are already dead (at least it seems like it). The less obvious fact is that even when they’re around, they’re not very important as parents.
What may be even less obvious is that even when they do matter as parents, their relationship with their child/children isn’t normally a major theme of the story.
Yet romance gets to be important in almost every story.
Poor parents.
So let’s dig into this. Here are a few questions to get us started.
- Why do parent-child relationships matter so much?
- What are the best examples of parent-child relationships you’ve seen in fiction? (film or novel) Why were they so good?
- What areas of parent-child relationships are most lacking in literature or most important to cover?
