Daeus Lamb started the topic Longer chapters in the forum Annual Theme Discussion 8 years, 1 month ago
Hey Saxon Scribes,
Today’s Monday, so we’re back to out yearly theme discussion of character development. I wanted to share something I’ve picked up recently that has been hugely impactful in my writing.
Longer chapters.
I used to write chapters that were about 2,000-2,500 words long on average. 800 was my lowest. 4,000 something was my…[Read more]

If you could leave your word counts here, that would be great. https://goo.gl/forms/QwrfeTMf5b9DzFS92 (Collecting them here will make them much easier for me to count up.)

@filewriter I don’t think Reggie would start the Gifpocalype on purpose, he just gets a little carried away at times. 😀 Couldn’t tell you where he gets it… *cough*definitely not from me*cough* I like the sound of the guilds. Are they still open for people to join?

This being Monday, it’s time for our annual theme discussion on character development.
I thought I’d touch on one of the best character development tools I’ve discovered: bondage.
Every character has faults, right? Their faults build our sympathy. Bondage goes farther. Bondage is something your character can’t get out of, can’t escape from, is…[Read more]

Hi Saxon Scribes,
While we took a break from it last week, the guild wars are starting up again. This time, instead of competing to see who can write the best prompt, we’re competing to see which guild can be the most productive during the week.
Basically, anyone in our guild who writes over 1,000 words this week can submit their word count at…[Read more]

Yes. It is a most accurate statement.
New Wessex, huh? Sounds fun. To bad though, I thought I spotted your name amongst the guild-lings of Erekdale. But I suppose now, at least, we shall have some competition between our most scintillating selves.

Hello Saxon Scribes!
I’ve been working on a short story for a competition that is coming up fairly soonish (not the SE one) and was hoping for some feedback. If any of you could just look at this doc and leave comments and suggestions, that would be amazing.
I’m mostly trying to deal with character development, preachiness, theme, and the…[Read more]

@ncstokes When you live with a dinosaur like I do, you often learn many interesting prehistoric facts. 🦖😅
Triceratops seem to be the most common SE species. Besides Coralie, Josiah’s one, and @ethryndal’s one too.

Hi Saxon Scribes,
I’ve got a prayer request to kick us off. I was thinking through the next scene in my story and realized I wanted to have God speak to my character in a vision. From a theological perspective, I am 99% sure that what I’ll be having God saying is perfectly in line with revealed truth, but what I’m worried about is that I might…[Read more]

@kate @r-m-archer @daues-lamb @ethryndal All of you did amazing at answering these questions, but I would like to try and give it a go.
And I’m definitely blaming you guys if I somehow am inspired to write an assassin type character. I’m becoming very much intrigued by what kind of person he/she would be. So good job, @daeus-lamb, at making us…[Read more]

@Ethryndal whaaaa…?
XD Guilty as charged.
The idea behind assassins is that they ought to be someone you DON’T expect to kill you, someone who doesn’t look scary or remotely threatening—otherwise, they’ve totally failed at their job.
EXACTLY. Thank you.

Hey Saxon Scribes,
I barely made this post in time before Monday ended. *blushes*
Along the lines of our annual discussion of character development, I thought it would be worthwhile to camp out on the assassin stereotype for a week and take a deep look at him.
This character type has a definite aura built around them. There are a few different…[Read more]

@daeus-lamb I just kind of hate the act of writing. I don’t enjoy any of it at the moment, all of it feels like work, and I kind of want to write the characters and the world, but I’m not nearly as excited about any of it as I was and it just feels like more work than it’s worth for some reason.
@ethryndal I basically did that for a large portion…[Read more]

Great work, @mcnoggin — especially with your colors and metaphors.
I’ll get to making some edits to this tomorrow (hopefully others can add their improvements today), but I just wanted to go ahead and share a couple of my initial thoughts.
