Zachary Holbrook replied to the topic Need Help Coming Up With Titles? in the forum General Writing Discussions 6 years, 3 months ago
Huh. I’ve never had a hard time coming up with titles– often a title is the first thing I dream up when brainstorming a story.

@duskflower Oof. Apparently I did a blooper and prepared my manuscript as a Google doc, got a shareable link– and forgot to give you the link. (It’s here: https://docs.google.com/document/d/16dw6pdEaoBjGOr63wZAOVpAS3gVHAbaNUAza9PZ520c/edit?usp=sharing but you might just want to wait for the second draft)
I’m doing a complete rewrite for the…[Read more]

I don’t know how you’re doing with beta reading ‘The Lore of Yore’, but I am integrating some of your comments into the second draft. I’m developing Keylori’s relationships with her top officers more– your comment about her not having much of a social life jived with my instincts because I know that people don’t really hold positions of power by…[Read more]

Hi! I don’t think I ever received the extended version (or I lost it). So glad to hear my comments were helpful! I would love to see the changes you made in the second draft when it’s ready. Until then, I’m happy to wait so I can make fresh comments (instead of saying the same thing over and over again for a hundred pages). Looking forward to it! 🙂

I joined a group of Emberlings called ‘The Iron Project’, which started through the main forum (https://storyembers.org/forums/topic/strength-in-numbers/) and looks like it might be filling some guild-esque roles. K.M Small shared a flash fiction and we’ve been critiquing it.

@deeprun I’ll take you up on it! I’m exactly the same way when it comes to beta reading.

I have time to critique longer chapters as well as completed stories.

Six-word stories all seem more like prompts or hooks than completed stories. Of the ones you wrote, I’m most intrigued by “He’s supposed to reign. Not me.” and “Once I too was a ghost.”

I missed out on the Story Embers film discussion last month, but I finally got around to watching Run the Race and wonder what thoughts other Emberlings might have.
My thoughts (spoilers):
The death of David Truett has no place in this film. It’s tacked on and completely irrelevant to almost everything else happening in the plot. The c…[Read more]

@jennythefaun The only thing I need in my writing life at the moment is people who want to read to my work…. also, I am willing and able to beta read.

True love. Dastardly plots. And the awesome power of twine.
That is to say… I have a flash fiction releasing this Thursday, January 2, through the ezine Havok. If you’d like to be swept up on an adventure to a ranch far, far away, visit gohavok.com this Thursday. You’ll have one day to read my story for free. Afterwards, it will vanish through…[Read more]

Zachary Holbrook replied to the topic Outlines! in the forum General Writing Discussions 6 years, 4 months ago
I just scribble down whatever ideas come to mind. Like this:
—Benor protects Tiel from some danger.
—Tiel leaves an impressive mural in some public place, drawing Hector’s attention
—Anarssan tells Benor and Tiel a story
—Benor works for Jimothy Whitespring and encounters his supposed granddaughter, Lilian
—Hector Greenstalker sponsors Ti…[Read more]

Zachary Holbrook replied to the topic My Plot Twist in the forum Plotting 6 years, 4 months ago
Emphasize the contrast between the protagonist’s crazy life and the normalness of walking in the park. Maybe she’s exhausted and really, really wants some time to herself, but that pesky plot-inciting twist steals that from her.

Zachary Holbrook replied to the topic A Small Experiment Regarding Those Most Fascinating Characters in the forum Characters 6 years, 4 months ago
Stories that completely engross me right from the start tend to feature sympathetic characters striving to do good in horrible situations. For example, Kaladin from The Way of Kings, everyone from A Quiet Place, and Shoko Nishimiya from A Silent Voice. I think the attractiveness of virtue is underrated in modern storytelling. Of course, you can…[Read more]

Whenever I see her, we laugh enough to last for the month. She’s my best friend, and someday when we’re old enough I’m going to talk her into staying here forever.
This is from Where the Mountain Meets the Moon by Grace Lin. I just finished reading that book.

@anne_the_noob14 I’ve never read a book with prophecies that get sent to a spam folder, but the idea intrigues me! I’ll have to check back and see if anyone’s guessed it later so I can look it up.
