Hi Skylarynn! I believe we met in the villains’ character castle a while ago! Nice to see you again!
Disclaimer, I have next to no medical knowledge, I’ll leave that to @the-inkspiller . However, I have some experience with longswords and some knowledge of medieval stuff (having researched it myself) So I’ll try to give you a partial…[Read more]

Let’s see if I can revive this thread.
So a character of mine (@anne_the_noob14 not Brendin, I swear) had a longsword thrown at his back when he was 17. I’ve already decided that it miraculously managed to cut his back open from his right shoulder to his left hip, but my questions for you are:
1) Is it possible the impact from…[Read more]

Haha! I don’t think we have met. I also disappear for large swatches of time, usually when I’m not writing, and then find myself trapped in some new part of my writing endeavor that will send me back here. Currently I’m doing my first edits on my novel, so I’m here to edit anything BUT my novel! Very productive, I know.
What a…[Read more]

Hey guys, really sorry to interrupt. (especially since this is slightly off-topic)
There’s a missing horse-training scene and it’s been bugging me to death for months, and I refuse to subject another faithful beta-reader to the draft until it’s done. (I didn’t know enough about horses at the time and I was just trying to finish…

@the-inkspiller Hey, uhhhhhhh, question. . . how likely is it that a fall from 25 feet, with the person landing on one leg, would break the femur of that leg? what all do you think would get broken? how long do you think it would take for it to heal. . .?
(thanks, and good luck on your nursing exams if you haven’t finished them yet!!)

Thank you so much! That’s perfect!
And thank you! Henry V is frankly inspirational, even if his speech may or may not be entirely Shakespeare’s imagination – the Bard knew how to write a monologue for sure.
Oh, I actually thought it was a reference to the Templars’ battle prayer. Cool either way!

It is a fairly great weight (2,400-2,800lbs) but luckily for him the weight is fairly well-distributed away from him so it’s not all on his leg. As for the deformation and loss of function, would he need a walking aid or might he only have a slight limp? If this helps any he’s about 17-18 years old.

How would a broken tibia and/or fibula be treated with medieval medicine? (They were broken from being stuck under a great weight)

Hi @the-inkspiller ! Just wanted to check if you saw my last post. I’m kind of stuck until I get that plot point worked out.
Btw, I love your quote! It’s Latin, an awesome quote, and a historical reference, three awesome things in one!

i agree with you that it should be researched! Although not by the faint of heart. There are reasons for their war crimes & cruelty because their were very much indoctrinated by the culture they lived in, however it still is terrible(not that you are saying it wasn’t). From my research, however, the Japanese did hosts of u…[Read more]

I have a talking owl, so don’t worry – I’m not judging a talking raven 😛
Water hemlock treated with charcoal! I am pleased with myself. I actually knew that bit of info already 😀 I read a book once, where a girl found water hemlock, didn’t know what it was (thought it was a turnip or something) and was…[Read more]

I heard about him! Reportedly, his iron hand was so well made that he could hold a quill with it. One thing’s for sure, he left an interesting legacy. XD
I’ve been thinking about the dilemma of the poison, and I might have a solution, but I have no idea if it’s feasible in any way, shape, or form.
Here’s the idea. The first dose…[Read more]

Thank you so much for your reply! It’s extremely helpful and points out the weak points in my idea.
My biggest issue is that I need some sort of slow-working poison so the characters can get to a specific place and back for the antidote.
I was planning for the victim to have some permanent damage from the poison, specifically,…[Read more]

I can’t answer this as well as @the-inkspiller probably could, but here are my two cents:
Antidote question: In all honesty, I have no idea. That is a question for Jonathan. But also… it’s your book, so if you need an antidote then I’d say go for it.
Permanent effects… You mentioned that the symptoms were paralysis,…[Read more]

Also might mandrake root have been used as an anesthetic? You’d mentioned something like that earlier, I think.

So how would a medieval skin graft work out? I ask because previously Brendin had been burned badly enough to need one and a very well trained University surgeon was on hand to treat him.

Thank you so much for your response! It’s funny that you mention this would be more likely survivable if he didn’t feel pain, because I forgot to mention Brendin doesn’t feel pain (or rather he has a greatly diminished capacity to feel pain) as an after effect of a nasty illness he had in his…[Read more]

How could someone in medieval-y times treat several large (1st or 2nd degree) burns across most of their body alone out in the wilderness? Also would cauterizing be better than leaving open wounds out in the wilderness?

*kicks awkwardly at the ground* So I haven’t been around here a ton lately so I don’t know if you’re still on here much. . . but if you are, I kinda need to know a very specific thing about eye lacerations? It’s ok if you don’t have time. XD But if you do just let me know lol
