Hi Joshua,
So the Kragvora are both humanoid and…
Are they part insect as well with a carapace or is the formation of some other substance like a tortoiseshell or some reptilian spine/scales.
Where does their mental collective reside?Ā At they Borg-like and assimilate their knowledge in some remote collective brain that they…[Read more]

These are very intriguing sets of creatures.
I have others in my WIP, but the Moonsprite/Gorgon/Jengu is the most bizarre one, I have imagined.
I have three dragons in my story as well: A Dust Dragon, which tunnels underground and avoids daylight.Ā Ā A Leviathan that takes its description from Job 41, Isaiah 27:1.Ā AN…[Read more]

Excellent character voice is extremely hard to pull off, and so like I do with all hard things in life, I decided to make a game out of it.
It’s a joke.
I’m kidding.
Mostly. š
Anyways, to the point. Character voice makes everything from dialogue to normal scenery descriptions pop off the page, but, for me at least, it is a very difficult…[Read more]

That’s ingenious! Very cool. At first, your description reminded me of the Ra’zac in the Eragon series, but your Kragvora are certainly original. I like how you combined the concept of vampirism with its other aspects.

Hi Joshua! (@storysmith)
Rose has some great ideas!
Make sure that your title connects with your story in a meaningful way.
Look through the story and listen for a turn of phrase or a particular part that you feel might encapsulate your story’s essence.Ā I think the upcoming seminar on Theme might give you some good ideas.Ā If you can, connect y…[Read more] -

Well, a good place to start is that your title doesn’t have to be perfect š The only thing your title has to do is fit your genre and the general idea of your story. It isn’t part of the story, it doesn’t necessarily have to make a big thematic statement or show some other layer to the story. It just has to sound good, be (somewhat)…[Read more]

Alrighty y’all, I’ve had several questions and thoughts piling up, and I thought I might as well put them all in one post. So here we go.
Replacements forĀ look:Ā I’m not referring to the context ‘he looked at the barn,’ I’m referring to the phrase ‘he gave her a flat look.’ Any replacement for that come to mind? I feel like a use it a l…[Read more]

@storysmith I’ll guess your character.
1) Name: Something with a Q? V? M? She looks like a Melissa.
2) Age: 14 to 19
3) Career/Role in Story: Mc
4) Personality: loves books. Braver than anyone would have guessed.
5) Would you be friends with that character?: Yup. Like I said earlier, I’d be friends with anyone. Even if it was a one-eyed…[Read more]

Rose replied to the topic Villain Character Advice in the forum Characters 4 years, 3 months ago
Sounds like a good plan! If you make sure to keep changing/advancing the feeling of dread it should work great. Don’t keep it a constant, make it come closer or disappear or let them discover new things about it on a smaller scale. Most times you bring it up there should be some small progress toward figuring out who/what it is.

How concerned are you about using an existing name? Do you go for complete originality?
Admittedly not concerned at all. If I know someone with a pretty name I’m writing it down and using it, everything is free game. Baby name websites are my best friend. As long as it seems to fit the genre, I’ll use anything. (I wouldn’t have a…[Read more]

I’ve been writing since middle school, so about 7 years, probably. But I’ve only really started writing seriously since 2020.

I recently found this cool method for coming up with names. Ā I havenāt trie fit for myself yet but maybe itāll be helpful:

Also, sometimes I just take real names and then modify them a bunch so they sound fantasy-like but still retain cultural elements from real life. Ā I also really like the LotR āson/daughter ofā method.

@storysmith You’re welcome! I use World Anvil a good deal. Less, recently, since I tend to focus on worldbuilding in waves and this has been an ebbing season as far as that goes, but it’s definitely my favorite worldbuilding tool.
