Hi, I’m Lavender Bleu, and I’m working on my first novel. I write primarily in the superhero and fantasy genres, and read primarily in them too although I’ll give almost anything a try. I’m a Marvel fan (DC Comics is also good, but I prefer Marvel overall) and am a huge nerd when it comes to things like mythology, languages, and biology.
Great success often depends on being able to distinguish between the impossible and the improbable.

You made it! Welcome! ^-^
Speculative fiction author. Mythology nerd. Worldbuilding enthusiast. Singer. Fan of classic literature.
January 29, 2022 at 10:53 am #147518Lavender Bleu@lavenderbooklingI did! It took a bit of time, but I made it!

January 29, 2022 at 11:25 am #147519Noah Cochran@noah-cochranHey Lavender, I’m Noah, glad to have you!
How long have you been writing? What’s your current WIP book about?
I am currently learning French (very slowly), what languages are you learning?
January 30, 2022 at 12:04 am #147528Joshua Scheele@storysmithHi Lavender! Welcome to the crew!
I am also working on my first fantasy novel. I also prefer Marvel because spiderman is my favorite superhero. I am starting to get into mythology a bit more but I love languages. I am slowly learning Latin to better understand the roots of English and also French, Spanish, Italian, Portuguese, and Romanian which it evolved into.
My sister Sarah @ajstoryteller is currently working on an awesome superhero/fantasy novel series that you might be interested in.
January 30, 2022 at 10:02 am #147540Lavender Bleu@lavenderbooklingI’ve been writing since middle school, so about 7 years, probably. But I’ve only really started writing seriously since 2020.
My primary WIP is about a girl whose power is fourth wall awareness and tries to convince everyone that she’s not crazy- which obviously doesn’t work, and forces her to pick between her family and her power.
I’m learning Brazilian Portuguese and Norwegian (Bokmål), but I had to put Norwegian on hold because of the spring semester.
Spider-Man is one of my favorites, but I also really like Squirrel Girl and Gwenpool (who was inspiration for the WIP I mentioned). Also, Night Nurse is really cool. You don’t get much more awesome than a nurse helping superheroes.
I’ve been reading a lot of books that are inspired by or based off of myths. It’s really interesting to be able to compare myths from different cultures, too. A lost of cultures have myths about giant snakes, for example. And the Romans stole the Greek’s pantheon, who apparently stole it from the Egyptians, so there are a ton of parallels there.
I studied Latin in high school and it’s hard. I hope your studies are going well. I know that Latin helped me understand aspects of language I previously hadn’t even known existed.
I’m always looking for more superhero books to read. Especially creative ones.

OhmyGOSH that’s literally the coolest power imaginable XD That must be so hilarious and meta to write!
I’m learning Brazilian Portuguese and Norwegian (Bokmål), but I had to put Norwegian on hold because of the spring semester.
Wow, those are awesome languages! I speak Afrikaans (first language), Dutch, English, and Latin! (I’m fluent in all of them but Latin but I passed my exam in that so I’m good enough XD)

Oof yes it is. (Book or children?? Guest or host?? And don’t even get me started on the declanations and conjugations.)
Some getting to know you questions! 😀
What’s the book that inspired you the most?
What’s your favorite book?
What’s your least favorite book?
Do you have any hobbies besides writing?
Without darkness, there is no light. If there was no nighttime, would the stars be as bright?

It is highly entertaining to write, and while it is complicated to handle the fourth wall awareness (there’s a reason people don’t write about these types often), I’m excited to finish it. I have a few stories planned for the same world, so this is kind of an introduction to how things work before stuff starts getting crazy. Because I have a lot planned. This world is one of my babies. XD

Sadly, I’m only fluent in English. But since my goal is to change that, I figured I might as well start somewhere. And yes, Latin kicks butt hard. I only got halfway through level 2.
What’s your favorite language to write in?
What’s the book that inspired you the most?
Well… for this particular WIP it was Marvel’s The Unbelievable Gwenpool by Christopher Hastings. I hope that I can pull off the combination of chaos and order like he did, because that character arc was really something.
But in general, I find Angie Sage, Brandon Sanderson, and Rick Riordan to be inspiring. Angie Sage does some wonderful work with points of view in her Septimus Heap series. Brandon Sanderon’s magic systems and worldbuilding are to die for (metaphorically, of course). Rick Riordan inspires me to write a story that has just as much thought, and reach, and relatability while staying true to God and my personal convictions. Because let’s face it, it would be awesome to have a Christian-friendly version of Percy Jackson and the Olympians and Harry Potter. (Although I’m not a fan of Rowling’s work since I feel like it just falls flat.)
What’s your favorite book?
Ah yes, the dreaded question… right now it’s a toss-up between The Terrible Two by Jory John and Mac Barnett and The Way of Kings by Brandon Sanderson.
What’s your least favorite book?
Have you ever heard of The Clone Codes by Fredrick McKissack and Patricia McKissack? I own a copy because I got it from a bookstore for $1 and wanted to finish it since I had started reading it, and then was never able to finish it because the friend I was borrowing it from moved away. The only reason I have not gotten rid of it is because it is such an excellent example of bad writing. Granted, I never did finish the trilogy, but I am amazed that a traditionally published book can be that awful, assuming that editors were involved in the process.
If you’re curious, read it yourself, but be wary of the strength of cringe you will likely experience.
Do you have any hobbies besides writing?
I knit, read (obviously ;P), draw/paint, and sometimes have time to practice cello. I used to do more before A) the pandemic B) college.

January 30, 2022 at 4:22 pm #147566Sarah@ajstorytellerHello @lavenderbookling! Welcome to Story Embers!
Your story sounds really cool, and I’d be very interested to see how you handle such chaos. As my brother already said, I’m currently managing my own sort of chaos in my superhero/fantasy story as well.
How long have you had concepts for your story? And how would you describe your world?
Also, I’m a bit of a biology nerd as well, specifically zoology. Do you have favorite animal?
January 30, 2022 at 4:59 pm #147569Inkhorn@inkhornWelcome!
Your WIP sounds really cool, and the idea of a girl who can break the fourth wall is both funny and clever. (I know for a fact that that power would have never entered my head even if I had a million years to think over all the possible abilities a character could have) What’s the setting for your WIP?
January 31, 2022 at 7:46 am #147584Noah Cochran@noah-cochranMy primary WIP is about a girl whose power is fourth wall awareness and tries to convince everyone that she’s not crazy- which obviously doesn’t work, and forces her to pick between her family and her power.
Wow, that’s wild, I love it.
I’m learning Brazilian Portuguese and Norwegian (Bokmål), but I had to put Norwegian on hold because of the spring semester.
Nice. Knowledge of several languages I’ve always found amazing, but it is also quite hard. xD

Oh, it’s just the best when you fall so in love with a world! I can imagine it’s hard to write! What are some of the ways she interacts with the fourth wall?
Sadly, I’m only fluent in English. But since my goal is to change that, I figured I might as well start somewhere. And yes, Latin kicks butt hard. I only got halfway through level 2.
Starting anywhere is progress! You chose cool languages!
What’s your favorite language to write in?
I write pretty much exclusively in English. Even though it’s my third language my vocabulary is definitely the best and I just love it as a language. I love the sound, I love the pretty words, and most of the books I read are in English anyway.
I want to maybe write something short in Afrikaans one day, (it’s also really special to me but the language is unfortunately dying) but I cannot spell it for the life of me XD What’s hard about it is that I can’t share it, so it’s hard to motivate myself to write it.

That sounds really cool! I really like Sanderson’s style! My favorites (I cannot narrow down on one XD) are the Red Ribbon by Lucy Adlington, The Book Thief by Markus Zusak, and the False Prince by Jennifer A Nielsen. I have more but that’s probably my top three!
Granted, I never did finish the trilogy, but I am amazed that a traditionally published book can be that awful, assuming that editors were involved in the process.
LOL I have those kinds of books too XD I have a few books (or even series) that are terribly written but I read them to remind myself that the bar is much lower than I think XD
I knit, read (obviously ;P), draw/paint, and sometimes have time to practice cello. I used to do more before A) the pandemic B) college.
Oh, that’s awesome! I know how to knit too but don’t do it an awful lot anymore. I mostly sew and embroider. I draw too! What medium do you use? I’d love to see some of your art!
The cello is such a beautiful instrument! I play the celtic harp!
Besides those things I do HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts), and ride my horses!

Thanks! It’s certainly been an interesting process to try and edit it.
How long have you had concepts for your story? And how would you describe your world?
Technically, I’ve had some concepts for the world since middle school, but it was for a different superhero world that I ended up scrapping. I kept some ideas (like how the anthropomorphics work) but pretty much changed everything.
It changes a lot over the course of the stories, but it starts out with superhumans secretly living among humans much like how witches/wizards secretly live around muggles in Harry Potter and how the half-bloods live among mortals in Percy Jackson and the Olympians. But then there’s a major event that causes what are essentially “dormant” superhumans to manifest world-wide and the superhumans are exposed to the world. Which, naturally, results in chaos. In the midst of this chaos more variations of humans are created only adding to the craziness of it all.
As of now I have three major groups of not-quite-humans, with one of these having a couple of sub-types determined by manifestation.
Also, I’m a bit of a biology nerd as well, specifically zoology. Do you have favorite animal?
- Mythical- gryphon.
- Cryptid- loch ness monster.
- Real- snow leopard or hummingbird.

(I know for a fact that that power would have never entered my head even if I had a million years to think over all the possible abilities a character could have) What’s the setting for your WIP?
Well, there’s what I’ve already mentioned above, but the story specifically takes place in California (Los Angeles and Sequoia National Park) and New Mexico.
Wow, that’s wild, I love it.
Thanks! I’m glad you like it.
Nice. Knowledge of several languages I’ve always found amazing, but it is also quite hard. xD
That’s the sad truth of being linguistically inclined. You still have to do all the educational grunt work.
Oh, it’s just the best when you fall so in love with a world! I can imagine it’s hard to write! What are some of the ways she interacts with the fourth wall?
The most important way is that she speaks directly to the narrator. To other characters, it looks like she’s having a conversation with no one, so they usually assume that she’s hallucinating. She often tries to get information out of the narrator that she can use to her advantage, and tends to bicker with the narrator which obviously doesn’t end well.

That’s understandable. I hope that Afrikaans doesn’t die, it seems to have an interesting history. I haven’t really looked into it, but I remember learning about it in school, and I’m pretty sure I put it on my languages list (which I have lost so I can’t check it right now).
That’s so cool! I’ve only read Skyward and Starsight by Brandon Sanderson, but none of the other authors
I read Skyward! It was really good and I can’t wait to read the sequel. I suppose you can always put them on your TBR list if you find them interesting. (I’m always adding to mine.)

I’ll have to check those out.

The standard for acceptable quality is always lower than I expect it to be. I blame my perfectionistic tendencies.
Oh, that’s awesome! I know how to knit too but don’t do it an awful lot anymore. I mostly sew and embroider. I draw too! What medium do you use? I’d love to see some of your art!
I use pencil, pen, and digital, mainly. Although I’m having some major issues working out how to use Adobe Illustrator… I have used Kleki.com before, which is limited but functional. I also do some painting with acrylics and have used charcoals (but I think I lost my set).
Once I can find a picture, I can show you the last painting I did.
The cello is such a beautiful instrument! I play the celtic harp!
Besides those things I do HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts), and ride my horses!
It’s so underrated. The cello is the instrument closest to the human voice in terms of pitch, and you don’t have to stand up to play it like a violin. I’m so glad I switched, since I have bad joints that don’t like standing for long periods of time.
I’d love to try HEMA, but there aren’t any clubs near me. I live in a really rural area… there are horses, though. And so many cows.

That sounds hilarious especially since it automatically means you have a voicey narrator! That sounds like just so much fun to read and write!

It does! It’s supposedly very easy for English speakers to learn as well! It has a very simple grammar and very few conjugations and declenations. (As opposed to Dutch, which conjugates everything)
I read Skyward! It was really good and I can’t wait to read the sequel. I suppose you can always put them on your TBR list if you find them interesting. (I’m always adding to mine.)
Oh, my TBR is always getting longer and longer, but I always end up rereading my favorite books for like the fourth time XD (That’s a conservative estimate I have books I’ve read more than six times)
The standard for acceptable quality is always lower than I expect it to be. I blame my perfectionistic tendencies.
Same! Sometimes you just have to read something, anything, to bring your standards back to a reasonable level.
I use pencil, pen, and digital, mainly. Although I’m having some major issues working out how to use Adobe Illustrator… I have used Kleki.com before, which is limited but functional. I also do some painting with acrylics and have used charcoals (but I think I lost my set).

That’s so cool! I’d love to see it! I use Krita for digital art! It’s free and functions just as well as photoshop, though it’s more geared toward artists and more intuitive to learn. It’s amazing and I love it!

It’s probably the instrument I’d like to play most next to harp! (However I barely have time for harp so adding an instrument is a bad idea XD)
I’d love to try HEMA, but there aren’t any clubs near me. I live in a really rural area… there are horses, though. And so many cows.
I guess there are just more clubs per square kilometer than in America XD
I live really rural too! There’s just a lot of pigs and cows and not much else XD

I always pick out a new book instead of one off of my TBR… I’m at a grant total of 475 on my Goodreads “want to read” list now.

I got Krita, but I haven’t had the time to use it yet. I’ve been busy prepping for spring semester and now it’s finally here.

Same here. XD My family keeps chickens and my mother used to have guinea fowl. Lots of people at least have chickens even if they don’t own a farm.
