@devastate-landing
Hey Linyang!
I haven’t done much actual drafting, but I have done some worldbuilding. I have so much stuff I want to cram in that I’m not sure whether to split it up into several worlds or not. Anyone else have this problem?
But anyway, they all involve elemental magic, multiple races, and either an unlikely hero or an…[Read more]

I’ve never played laser tag either lol. But the idea sounds really cool! Torsten has certainly never seen a laser in his life.
Extreme climates sounds cool (no pun intended) too. If I add in Malar, the snow idea could be pretty crazy since he’s never seen it either, living in the desert and all. (Maybe we can do the desert…[Read more]

Do you have any favorite art resources (Youtubers, books, blogs, etc.) you can recommend?

IKR! Nobody cares about small talk, not me the extravert not Joe the serial killer, not Max the waiter, not Tim the three-year-old! (…that would be an interesting set of characters for a shortstory XD).
Lol, it would be! A story about how no one really cares about that stuff.
If any of that was…actually…helpful…XD. But bei…

Yes, Doug’s narration is the best! Gary Schmidt is so great with character voices.
I’m working on a contemporary book right now. It deals with some heavy topics, but I’ve gotten a lot of inspiration from Schimdt’s books and style. Do you write contemporary too?

I remember you saying Liorah liked to adopt characters. It seems that that might be happening to Torsten 😉

Torsten
My tears would not stop. I kept wiping my nose and eyes to keep any tears from falling onto the floor. I didn’t want to get in trouble for making a mess, even if I was dead.
“This isn’t over, you illegitimate son of a camel,” I heard a gruff but feminine voice say. I slowly looked up, thinking the words were directed at me. I didn’t…[Read more]

He is! I haven’t found many books like his either, but Everything Sad is close. I just love his writing style and the way he, as I saw one person put it, makes nerdy things cool. What’s your favorite book by him? I think mine is Just Like That. But they’re all amazing.

Pulling this out of my files has definitely made me want to get back to it! The writing came (comparatively) easily to me. I love Malar’s voice and it is shaping up to be the kind of story I want to read.

I believe I’m an INTP. I have some INTJ qualities and relate to a lot of the jokes and humor about them as well. My best writer friend is an INFP.
I’m also of the phlegmatic temperament.

Yeah, I myself don’t really know what the Rissians did or what exactly Resolve is. I really just wrote this on the spur of the moment after getting the word “Resolve” in my head. And so I got this sarcastic main character and really interesting first person present tense. Usually that drives me nuts, but I think it’s…[Read more]

Sparrow,
This is very good, though. Each scene should leave a reader with enough questions to entice them to read on for the answers in prior or following scenes.
Even your excerpt does that, and it begs to be a larger story, and that is exactly what needs to happen.
While isolating a single scene like we both did on Audio Cinema may seem a bit…[Read more]-

Title pretty much says it all. My WIP is contemporary YA. I like all sorts of genres, but I don’t see contemporary or realistic fiction talked much about. There’s a lot of crummy stuff in this genre in the YA category but I really like how confrontational contemporaries can get and the issues they can tackle. My favorite realistic fiction author…[Read more]

Torsten
I had never run so fast in my life. Which does not mean I was actually running fast. We shetts are not known for our speed, and compared to any other shett I was slower than a rock.
How ironic it was that I was now being chased by sentient rocks. Giants, golems, rumi–whatever they were called I didn’t want to meet them. T…[Read more]

I’m a nerd with terrible vision too lol
My shyness I think is really the only thing that’s kept me from making friends. I’ve never gotten to know people well enough IRL to know if they like me or not. But I’m working on it. It’s super hard because I hate small talk. I just want to talk about books or storytelling or music. Jump right into…[Read more]

Ok, I’ll try! (Again, please forgive me if my posts are extremely sporadic. I may need to drop out at any moment.)
Here’s my character:
Torsten Kame
Male, 34 years old (around 19 in human years). He’s a creature I made up called a shett–think basically a giant tortoise that walks on its back legs. Around 7 feet high. (I can share a picture if…[Read more]

I can maybe join! I don’t know how active I could be, and I don’t really know where to begin, but I can try.
I could use my characters Torsten or Malar. Who are so different it would be quite interesting to see them together.

I like metaphors and similes, but they should be used sparingly. I think there was a Story Embers article a while ago that said they should do double duty–describe the thing you’re trying to describe and show off your character’s voice, like Rose said. I read a book recently–Brother’s Keeper by Julie Lee–that had a good amount…[Read more]

Thank you for your feedback! I’ll get back with a longer reply sometime, but thank you so much for your detailed critique.
I must admit hearing somebody else read my work was a bit strange, but you did a great job. Your voices were great.
Thank you so much!

Wow, thank you so much! Yes, I have heard that phrase–first learned it in Latin class as “Fortes fortuna juvat.”
I would love to hear your dramatization. This is just a piece I wrote several months ago and I have not written any more of it (I have this and one paragraph of notes XD). I feared it might be confusing,…[Read more]

Oh dear, I thought I replied to this topic, but it looks like it must’ve gotten deleted in the great Forum Post Apocalypse.
Anyways, thanks for the tips! How do you color the eyes in your drawings? They’re always so beautiful and have a great liveliness to them.
