Title pretty much says it all. My WIP is contemporary YA. I like all sorts of genres, but I don’t see contemporary or realistic fiction talked much about. There’s a lot of crummy stuff in this genre in the YA category but I really like how confrontational contemporaries can get and the issues they can tackle. My favorite realistic fiction author is Gary D. Schmidt.

Does anyone know of good contemporary Christian fiction that tackles real issues and doesn’t focus on dumb romances? I hardly see any good books in this category for the MG and YA audiences. Everything Sad Is Untrue is a great new one, but it’s not marketed as explicitly Christian although it really is very Christian.

@sparrowhawke *raises hand* I do!! But like you, I haven’t found many good books without romance… Which makes me want to write one. 😂

Yes!! Gary D. Schmidt is a genuis! I wish there were more books like his out there. I’ll have to check out Everything Sad Is Untrue.

He is! I haven’t found many books like his either, but Everything Sad is close. I just love his writing style and the way he, as I saw one person put it, makes nerdy things cool. What’s your favorite book by him? I think mine is Just Like That. But they’re all amazing.

I actually just read Just Like That! I didn’t even know there was a third book in that series until very recently, and of course I had to read it. I really liked that one. My favorite is Okay for Now. 😊 I love Doug Swieteck’s kind of ornery character and voice.

So… just out of curiosity, do you write any contemporary fiction? (:

Yes, Doug’s narration is the best! Gary Schmidt is so great with character voices.

I’m working on a contemporary book right now. It deals with some heavy topics, but I’ve gotten a lot of inspiration from Schimdt’s books and style. Do you write contemporary too?
