Thanks for the tag, @noah-cochran
I’ve been watching this thread from afar while busy with midterms and papers, so hopefully my contributions are coherent (I also hope to catch up on the other threads soon). 😛 I feel like this debate has gone beyond how we define magic and is delving more into different presuppositions about what makes fiction C…[Read more]

To be candid, I’m surprised that you even consider Riordan okay. The bible constantly talks against other gods, and messing with demonic or and natural realms, and Riordan’s plots are literally based around greek gods and their supernatural powers. Do you think our God would like us reading books where those false gods are actually…[Read more]

I still don’t think any of those things are inherently wrong to use. The real world has false gods and false religions. It’s far more one-note and lazy, in my opinion, to create a world in which there is only one religion which is obviously the true religion based on Christianity than to create a world with dynamic, conflicting beliefs in whi…

I will most definitely be checking that link out, thanks for sharing. 🙂
Nine drafts? Yikes, you must be quite the perfectionist. xD By drafts I assume you mean editing runthroughs? Or do you mean actually re-writing/recasting each chapter? Even 5 drafts seems like a lot to me. xD

I don’t think that’s necessarily the case so long as rule #1 is followed and the benefits are temporary and far outweighed by the consequences.
It’s a real dangerous thing to mess with and it can portray you (the author) as someone who is okay with magic to readers who are confused. It’s a very slippery slope.
Riordan’s and Sanders…

So if I understand your point correctly, you’re saying that you agree that magic and supernatural things are sin, but it is fine to right if portrayed carefully as thing a person does in the book that is wrong, like any other sin such as murder, theft, lust, lying, etc…Is that correct?
If that is what you’re saying, that is a valid…[Read more]

I think we’ll have to agree to disagree on this point. I don’t believe it’s anti-biblical to portray a fact of the world, be it physical or spiritual, so long as it’s done with biblical truth in mind and with care not to mislead readers.
There is a huge difference between portraying a fact (showing that it exists) and having a protago…[Read more]

“Reading YA is just a draining experience for me at this point more than an edifying one, and though that’s not always a bad thing if you’re aware of it, I’ve needed to take more in recently so I’ve been gravitating toward non-fiction and classics, lol.”
Ah, what’s your favorite classic or nonfiction book so far? Are you needing…[Read more]

Yeah, there’s a lot of junk out there for teens (which was why I moved away from reading in that category when I was in highschool. It’s depressing.) But I think that’s awesome that you’re looking out for your sisters, and that you have a passion to minister to fellow teens! Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts.

Hey, nice blog there! Also, very cool dogs!
In case you were curious, I’m still thinking about college. As I have researched more, I came to a realistic conclusion that animal photography better fit my natural strengths than, say, starting up a goldfish shop. However, in another sense, I would still have a business – it…[Read more]

True. XD Someone really ought to fix that.
Totally. It has a load of potential and the aesthetic is just plain cool XD
Ooooh. That sounds very nice.
It’s so good! And I love the new characters that get introduced. Among others, her son Jake actually gets a personality and is there for the majority of the book, which is really fun. And…[Read more]

THANK YOU NOAH
Joelle, I loved reading this, it made my day. 🙂 I’m glad we agree, we need to complain to each other about it sometime. 🙂 xD
Thanks for the reply Olivia! I’m glad you were able to see the clear differences through my mess of a post. xD

I knew it! I loved that book. The sequel was good, too, but not as good as the first one, imo. I haven’t gotten the chance to read the rest of the series.
LOL, Victorian Fantasy doesn’t leave you many options, unless you include steampunk XD

Hi Olivia! Thanks for replying! 🙂
I couldn’t help noticing the title and thinking “sounds like it should be from the Mysterious Benedict Society”, and voila! you mentioned it yourself! xD Those books are so good.
LOL, yes! I love those books and the titling is hilarious!

Greetings fellow scriveners!
Excuse me for the “Mysterious Benedict Society”-esque title, it was the most fitting. XD
As some of you know, and the rest are to find out, I’ve been planning a new project. It’s a fantasy set in an alternate Edwardian/Rococo timeline, and it involves pirates, spies, and seamstresses. (And several other interesting…[Read more]

I’ve had a reader tell me a certain scene needed heavy rework, then come back to it later believing I fixed it, then give me glowing praise for my rework.
Despite, you know, that I didn’t touch it at all.
That’s hilarious man. 😂

I actually wrote an entire schpeel and then accidentally deleted it XD But it’s actually exactly what @r-m-archer said, except she said it far better and clearer than I did. Character’s reactions, and how their reactions change, is the best way to show internal conflict.
It’s especially good if you can have two similar…[Read more]

Hey, hey my friends, today, I would like to confess something: One of my beta readers died from over exposure to internal conflict. xD Jk, the reader is fine, but my writer’s conscience is not. 😄
