Thanks for writing this, @kjames0813!
Overall it’s great! I agree with @kari-karast that the ending feels incomplete. I don’t know where the word count is, but maybe at the end the POV could switch to Jacob and show how he feels sad but ultimately triumphant about refusing to help Matt? And maybe that could show that the whole town gets damaged…[Read more]

@kjames0813 you’re not letting us down! I didn’t mean to rush anybody, I just wanted keep the gears moving…three days to the deadline!
<p style=”text-align: left;”>@kr-lalonde as we’ve said before, it’s never too late! Every Knaplinger is part of this project!</p> -

So… We had said we wanted to have this done two days before the deadline…which means we have TWO DAYS to get writing and editing. I made up a suggestion outline using tentative names, so of course we don’t have to use this, but if anyone finds it helpful:
Scene One: Town Anniversary celebration; accident with fire (fireworks?) kills…[Read more]

@mckinley actually I thought all of those ideas were golden!
As far as the setting/style, maybe writing in a style that sounds almost like a classic or a fairytale even though it takes place in a modern-ish American town would have a cool effect? Maybe that’s not what we feel like doing but I thought I’d toss it out there.

@kari-karast I think the gooogle docs idea sounds awesome!
I reaaaly love where this is going! I also like the idea that the villain and protagonist have some important personality trait in common. I think with the faulty festival stuff, maybe the townspeople were careless and at least some people kind of knew the stuff was a little…[Read more]

@maddie-jay
😭😭😭 (Good crying)
The whole time I knew what was coming and yet when I got there it was different than I expected
So yes, that’s a great example of how much we can do with this word limit. I love where we’re going with this; we just need to settle on some names, develop the two main characters, and pick a setting–sounds like a…[Read more]

I also clap and cheer and whoop for @duskflower‘s third idea for the ending, and @duskflower‘s second idea for the story itself. Such as, what if the villain has kind of taken the protag under his wing and mentored him, intending to make the protag his successor? But when the villain starts asking the MC to do terrible things, the protagonist…[Read more]

Ok guys, this is fun!
@i-david, the Villain’s Birthday idea was HILARIOUS. But I think for the ending to be truly happy, there has to be some kind of hope.
@naomi-sowell Ditto!
@kb-writer I liked your outline, even if it would work better as a novel.
I really love what @samantha-pen said. I think it combines all the ideas we’ve had so far.…[Read more]

Welcome, new Knaplings! *presents each of you with an official Knapsack*
@kr-lalonde, I don’t know if this helps or not, but just in case it does: What I like to do with a writing prompt (I’m thinking of a dialogue kind of prompt, but I don’t know if that’s what you’re working with) is try to identify a character or two and figure out their key…[Read more]

I’m with you guys–I hadn’t thought too specifically about weather as a world building tool either… although I’m suddenly realizing how important weather is in my stories. In my WIP, storms are all caused by the evil supernatural forces, so characters who get caught in a storm could get sick or turned off course, or feel like something is…[Read more]

Is it weird to be totally nervous about this? XD I mean, I guess it is a war, so…
I think the villain POV idea could be an interesting twist, and I totally agree with what @kb-writer said about the best happy endings being happy in a way the characters didn’t expect. So…what if we somehow merged those? What if the villain got everything he…[Read more]

I know this thread is super old, but…
I think a hero-to-villain arc could be fascinating! I will say though, the only negative MC arc I remember reading was one of the most compelling character arcs I’ve seen because I still looooved the character even though he was doing terrible things. I wanted to see him redeemed. And…[Read more]

Lol yes, that’s so true!
@maddie-jay
Agh, those typos! Always so much easier to spot in other people’s writing… 😛 Yeah, POV switches are something I use way too much. I like getting different perspectives on the story, but I understand that the story feels choppy and confusing if it gets inside too many characters’ heads. XD I…[Read more]

So, a couple months ago I wrote a story that was just going to be “for fun,” but ended up being one of my favorite things I’ve written. It also ended up being rather long for a short story, weighing in at over 9,000 words. I’m not planning on editing it more (unless you guys convince me I should), but I’d appreciate it a lot if you could give me…[Read more]

Thank you!
I wasn’t hooked after the first book either, but from there it really took off. I went ahead and make a Wingfeather thread in literary discussions or whatever that’s called (I only tagged @kari-karast so I don’t know if other people noticed it or not) if you want to discuss it more.
Having a book published is pretty…[Read more]
