I also clap and cheer and whoop for @duskflower‘s third idea for the ending, and @duskflower‘s second idea for the story itself. Such as, what if the villain has kind of taken the protag under his wing and mentored him, intending to make the protag his successor? But when the villain starts asking the MC to do terrible things, the protagonist eventually decides to leave the villain, which is obviously the right thing but means leaving behind his best friend and someone who’s done a lot to help him, and the MC feels bad because he wishes he could have had more influence on the villain? I know we already have other good ideas for the plot; I was just trying to think of a way to get to the ending Duskflower described.

And I heartily agree that we need to work on the character! Maybe we could use the Character Questionnaire from the SE resource library?

I think early on @kjames0813 volunteered to do the writing. Does that offer still stand?
