Saevus swung his sword downward. Lord Castle managed to deflect the blow, sending it into the ground beside him. He then rolled, leaped back up to his feet, and deflected another blow from Saevus.
On level ground once more, Saevus pressed his attack forward aggressively. He blasted a series of cuts and slices at Lord Castle, forcing him back…[Read more]

“To be honest we haven’t quite worked out that part yet,” Nathiar said with a small smile. “I suppose we should start with seeing if there’s some sort of passage out of this room…”
Miles nodded and looked around. There was a slight draft in the room, signaling that there was an exit. He licked his fi…[Read more]

Caleb leaned back. He had hit his head. He was in a cave. He still had all his gear. This had to be a dream. Or the beginning of the afterlife. He was definitely not at home. A hussar in full armor, quite possibly a guide to heaven, was talking to others nearby. Probably others like himself. Well, he had had a good life. His family would miss him…[Read more]

Yarrow
Yarrow gripped his bow, half hating it, half hoping it would give him the strength to face whatever else this castle might hold.
Suddenly a tall metal dude stepped forward. As the sound of the giant’s chanting filled the room, Yarrow shivered. Is this monster in league with Holda? Yarrow jumped up and knocked an arrow. Well, she should h…[Read more]

*Alessio stares blankly at you for a full minute; ‘How dare you break the Fourth Wall, sir.’
Me at Alessio; ‘I can’t with this guy’*
Oooh that could be fun!!! Then we’d have to KILL Lord Foedus afterward and that’d scare all our characters!!!! Lol jk! That could be pretty wicked cool.

Oh, an excuse to rant about my plot again! 😋✌️
To start @adnyole I love your concept and I can see a lot hinges on this plot and theme-wise so I think from what I’ve read you should keep her pregnant. I also think you can handle this subject matter if you commit to it and pray about it but *…[Read more]

Agreed. I really care about emotional impact in my writing on all levels.
That is actually in the story too. 😛 Lydia was intended to trigger the escape so someone from ‘her’ household raises the alarm. Ambrose takes an arrow to the shoulder and because the Kisi tribe uses arrows shaped like corkscrews, they can’t get it out, so they…[Read more]

Good to know!
That is a very wise decision, and I think that by avoiding focusing on the act itself, you’ll be much less likely to trigger your readers!
Also:
@jared-williams has two characters who both experienced sexual trauma (I actually think both were in some kind of slavery). He’s also exploring themes surrounding that, and the…[Read more]

@calidris Yeah, I totally agree that Christians should be people who talk about hard topics with grace and truth, in art and in the church, etc. My audience is intended to be adults and mature young adults. Ambrose starts as a teen, but a late teen like 18/19 or so, and by the time we make it to enslavement he is likely going to be a year or two…[Read more]

@adnyole of course! Thank you for clarifying! I think it’s great that you’re considering including it – sexual abuse is sadly extremely common in slavery, but it’s not something people like to talk about. I also think it’s interesting that it was coercion, but not outright force – I think that sometimes people tend to just look at the act it…[Read more]

@calidris Yoh! You just hit the nail on the head! Yeah, this is the type of advice I am looking for. I have literally been wrestling with those types of questions about the character… I definitely have the purpose in mind to show a story of restoration and redemption, definitely not out for willy-nilly here. The context is intended to be one of…[Read more]

@adnyole Hello! I have a few thoughts 🙂
Before I get started, I am going to (non-graphically) discuss sexual abuse in this context, so just a heads up in case this is a sensitive topic for you! Also, I don’t know what your gender is, so I’m just going to address both sides of the issue XD
So, I guess my question is, what was the context b…[Read more]

Hi. *waves*
Haha, I know exactly what you are talking about. XD Some side characters insist on stealing the spot-light and that makes it hard as an author.
Calidris had some great advice. One thing I thought maybe I should mention is you could always try 2 points of view instead of 1. If Payton wants to steal the show but for story…[Read more]

I think Rose is right…probably between 75k and 100k. If it’s under that it’s always okay to classify it as a novella, and if it’s over it’s just a big book (yay!) or you can probably cut the length down in edits.
Personally I like aiming for 80k (which is usually too short for me XD).

Hey! *waves* I haven’t been on here for probably a year, so I don’t think we’ve met.
I think your story sounds really intriguing.
I am sure you have already thought of a few of these, but I will throw them out there anyway.
You could always show the loss of intimacy through Lydia’s emotions instead of actions. She could be heartbroken…[Read more]

Hi, yeah I am pretty new. Thanks for the input. Yeah, she does end up having to tell him at some point before the escape and Yona would really struggle with it because of the dishonor he feels.
