Hi, everyone! Quick question, what is the average or ideal word count for a YA fantasy novel? I found conflicting information online (I guess it is somewhat subjective??) and want to know what benchmark or range to aim for with my current WIPs. Thanks in advance for your input!

        Hey Mariah!

From my reading and experience, 100k is a good average figure! I think the minimum is about 75k, but because it’s a fantasy it could easily go up to 150k, though that might be a bit harder to market.

However, if you’re a little under or over that, it won’t make a whole lot of difference.

        I hope this helped!

Without darkness, there is no light. If there was no nighttime, would the stars be as bright?

I think Rose is right…probably between 75k and 100k. If it’s under that it’s always okay to classify it as a novella, and if it’s over it’s just a big book (yay!) or you can probably cut the length down in edits.

Personally I like aiming for 80k (which is usually too short for me XD).

According to MasterClass, the average YA fantasy novel is about 40,000 to 80,000 words. If you plan to take this to a publisher, that would probably be a good number to shoot for. That being said, I like the other answers on here better.

Thank you all! This was super helpful!! I think I’m going to plan for hitting 80,000 words since that seems like a solid average length for this genre. Thanks again!
