I had an idea (inspired by @rose-colored-fancy ‘s thread😉) that might be fun.
Tell us your plot in as few words as possible, while still including the whole thing. Dialogue (either from your story, or made up) is a fun way to do it.
If you aren’t sure about the plot (or just want to do something else) you can also do character arc in as few…[Read more]

I was sceptical at first…but it looked like too much fun.😂
– Old wizard tries to keep his friends from killing sulky outlaw.
– Or: Sulky outlaw tries not to be helped by old wizard and saved from all old wizard’s friends (but totally fails😝).

Good article!
I find that whenever I’m alone, I work through scenes, building character voice (out-loud😁), and filling in details from my surroundings.
I also work to find story everywhere…learning how story effects media, dinner, how-to books, laundry, and even how we talk. Our whole society is practically built off of story.
And…[Read more]

Thought I’d run a “future” book idea by you guys.
This is probably going to sound terrible, but…😂
Damien is just a farm-boy, until his uncle is murdered by a government Tracker. Damien kills the murderer, out of self defence, and is forced to flee. Now an outlaw, hunted by the Emperor, Damien begins to realize that most of what he knew about…[Read more]

Hello Tanya! Welcome! So nice to see another Canadian here (there’s a few of us😊).
I’m Gracie, a teen writer and artist from a little further north. I love Jesus, cats, Lord of the Rings, and am currently reading Ben Hur. What is your favorite book/story?
My current work is a fantasy book about what it means to leave a legacy,…[Read more]

I think most of my countries would do it in a similar manner…an adoptive family, orphanage worker, or other care-taker would name them, and that’s what they would go by. Some may never have surnames, and some would just take the ones of the people they were in the care of.
Unfortunately, in some cultures, they probably don’t take…[Read more]

Such a good question! All of a sudden I’m like, “Wait, how do they…”
I’m gonna have to think about it and get back.😁

Sounds cool to me. I love fairy-tale retellings, so I might be a little biased.😄
I’m wondering what the point of her being an illegitimate daughter is. Is it going to be important later in the story? Also…just a random idea…what if she wasn’t actually illegitimate, but her father was hiding her true identity?
Can’t wait…[Read more]

*doing a mental checklist of how many my stories do or don’t have*
I think we could see more good sibling relationships. And healthy parent-child relationships.
I also really want to see more of the “left behind” side of romantic relationships. The friends who are no longer the most important in…[Read more]

I thought it’d be fun to discuss what things we don’t see enough of in books. I can be anything from long-haired cats to plot-twists to the word “slaked”.
Give me all your opinions.

@erynne Hope you don’t mind me popping in.😂
I’ve had this problem too with some of my writing. I think maybe too other things that might help is to pay attention to books written by men authors (like Andrew Peterson) and try to see how they do boy characters. One of the biggest differences my Dad always reminds me is that boys don’t (often)…[Read more]

I like it. I think the biggest thing might be to focus on exactly what you want your reader to notice. For example, you could probably take out the part about the white underskirt and replace it by calling the violet dress “layered.” You also might be able to combine the sentence about jewelry and her skin color by making t…[Read more]

@daeus-lamb This is a really cool subject.
I almost always come up with characters first. Being an artist, I usually visualize them first, and then move to personality, then base the character arc off of the personality. Almost all personalities have “weaknesses” that are easy to turn into flaws (like introverts struggling to get along with…[Read more]

Arindown (Gracie) replied to the topic How Do You Write Characters That Are Completely Different From Each Other? in the forum Characters 4 years, 6 months ago
@kylie-wingfeather I love this!
Skylarryn nailed it with some options, but I just wanted to say that Teaghan and Ruse sound amazing. It is my absolutely favorite thing to write characters that are different from each-other. I literally am not having any fun if two characters aren’t rubbing on each-other in all the wrong ways.😆
My advice (…[Read more]

This is the introduction I give for my MC, Thane, from the POV of Mr. Burncut, a tavern owner.😁 I’ll probably revamp it in the future, but here it is…
As Mr. Burncut crossed the room, someone caught his eye. A figure was sitting alone in the far corner, head lowered, and dirty leather boots sticking out from underneath a thick dark cloak.…

@rose-colored-fancy This is so awesome! I’m gonna hop on shortly.
I don’t usually do that much description of my characters…I like to leave a lot of it to the imagination, but I’ll see what I can come up with.
